Man, associate held for firing, assaulting brother-in-law in Faridabad
A 29-year-old man and his associate were arrested by Faridabad Police for allegedly firing at, ramming a car into, and assaulting his brother-in-law in an apparent revenge attack on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on August 7. The incident followed the victim's complaint to the power distribution company (discom) alleging electricity theft at the accused's residence, officials said on Wednesday. On Pankaj's complaint, an FIR was registered at Sector 17 police station on August 8. The accused were identified as Sunny, 29, a resident of Indira Complex in Sector 87, and Rahul Kumar, 25, of Bhoor Colony in Old Faridabad. Police also seized a country-made pistol from Sunny, which they said he had borrowed from his friend Parth Sharma, who, along with three other suspects, remains at large. The victim, Pankaj Kumar, 32, a gym owner from Thakurwara in Old Faridabad, was returning home around 11pm on August 7 in his Mahindra Thar with friends from Sector 17 when the attack occurred. According to police, Sunny and four associates chased Pankaj in a Harrier, firing at him from the moving car. Pankaj sustained multiple fractures and cut wounds from the crash and assault, police said. 'The bullet missed by inches, and Pankaj survived. He tried to accelerate to outrun them,' said Yashpal Yadav, public relations officer, Faridabad police. Sunny then allegedly rammed the Harrier into the Thar, causing it to flip while the Harrier mounted the divider. The collision disrupted traffic for several minutes, Yadav said. After the crash, Sunny allegedly attempted to shoot Pankaj again, but the weapon misfired. The suspects then assaulted him before fleeing upon spotting multiple police vehicles approaching. Police said the attack was linked to a family dispute. 'Pankaj's in-laws were pressuring him to legally separate from his wife, transfer half his property to her name, and pay ₹1 crore alimony,' said a senior police officer. 'To teach them a lesson, he complained to the discom about electricity theft at their home, which landed them in trouble. Sunny, his wife's maternal cousin, planned the attack in retaliation.' On Pankaj's complaint, an FIR was registered at Sector 17 police station on August 8 under charges of attempted murder. Raids are ongoing to arrest the other suspects.

Cow vigilante Raj Kumar alias Bittu Bajrangi. (HT PHOTO) The 2023 violence spread to Gurugram and left six people dead and over 70 injured. Bajrangi, who heads the Goarakshak Bajrang Force, was booked for rioting, assault, brandishing weapons, and dacoity in connection with the communal violence. He was among 292 people arrested for the violence. Another cow vigilante, Mohit Yadav alias Monu Manesar, was accused of releasing provocative videos that inflamed communal tensions. Police said two armed personnel were deployed outside the residence of Bajrangi in Faridabad on Sunday evening. They will remain there until the procession is completed, they added. The Nuh Police denied Bajrangi permission to attend the yatra before he was put under house arrest. Faridabad Police public relations officer Yashpal Yadav said that Bajrangi submitted an undertaking on Sunday that he would not make any unwarranted statements. Kumar said he was taken to a police station from his residence on Sunday evening to keep him there until the procession in Nuh was completed. 'I requested them to keep me at my allowed me to go after I submitted the undertaking and they placed two armed personnel at my house's entrance,' he said. Kumar moved the Punjab and Haryana high court for permission to attend the procession. He urged an urgent hearing on his petition. Police were separately deployed at a Muslim shrine after it was damaged at Sainipura in Nuh's Tuaru town hours before the commencement of the yatra. Nuh deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena said the situation was peaceful. 'Senior officials are camping in the area to ensure peace and tranquillity. All stakeholders have been taken into confidence after holding meetings with them following the incident, which was probably aimed at disrupting peace,' Meena said. He said the yatra was being held peacefully across the district. Meena said that drones are deployed around temples, and CCTV cameras have been installed at key locations to monitor movements. 'This time, police personnel are also patrolling the hills around the Nalhar Temple for surveillance.' In 2023, devotees en route to the Nalhar Temple were attacked from a hilltop.

Mistaken for a thief, man beaten to death by 2 security guards in Faridabad
Two security guards were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old man at Sector 10 in Faridabad. The incident took place on the intervening night between July 5 and 6. Police said their initial probe revealed that the accused, employed as security guards in the area, mistook the victim, Vikas, for a thief and attacked him with sticks. According to police, on July 5, Vikas visited his brother and father at the Rajasthan Seva Sadan, a wedding venue in Sector 10 where they worked as sanitation workers, and left later that night. But the next morning, police said his body was found on a road adjacent to the Sadan. In a complaint filed at the Sector 11 police station, Vikas's brother, Abhishek, alleged that he was killed by security guards, Chaman and Vijay Kumar. Police said a case was registered under murder charges of the BNS at the Sector 8 police station. A police spokesperson stated that the team acted swiftly and arrested the security guards. Kumar hails from Badram village in Bihar's Siwan district, and currently resides at Adarsh Nagar in Ballabgarh; Chaman is a resident of Gudawari village, Palwal. The accused were produced in court on Monday and remanded for two days in police custody. The Faridabad district has been witness to similar attacks on youths in recent times. Last month, the Faridabad Police arrested a 19-year-old man and apprehended his two minor accomplices for allegedly assaulting and holding an 18-year-old Dalit boy, Sahil, hostage at Subhash Colony in Ballabgarh. According to the police, the accused allegedly tonsured the teen's head, shaved his eyebrows, and moustache, and hurled casteist slurs against him. According to the police, the main accused hatched a plan to attack Sahil, who was once his close friend, 'to teach him a lesson' due to the ongoing disputes between the two. Preliminary investigations in this case had revealed that the two had known each other for eight years.

Dubai hotelier accused of Dh950 million crypto scam arrested in India
A Dubai hotelier accused of running a fake investment scheme worth over Dh950 million has been arrested in India. Faridabad Police, in the northern Indian state of Haryana, confirmed the arrest to Khaleej Times on Saturday, describing it as a 'big catch'. The 39-year-old suspect, who reportedly ran a four-star hotel in Dubai Marina, was allegedly the key figure behind the HPZ Token scam — a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme that duped thousands of Indians with promises of unrealistically high returns. Khaleej Times is withholding the man's name for legal reasons. He was declared a fugitive economic offender by an Indian court earlier this year — a designation later made public by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED said it has identified laundered proceeds of over Rs2.2 billion (Dh956 million) in the HPZ Token case. The suspect allegedly used his Dubai businesses to move illegal funds out of India via payment gateways, then convert them into cryptocurrency, and hand over the crypto to Chinese handlers after taking a cut. 'He was arrested in Delhi's Rohini Sector 11 area and is on police remand,' Faridabad Police PRO Yashpal Yadav told Khaleej Times on Saturday. "It's a big catch." He said the suspect was tracked through a payment gateway account that had received a portion of the defrauded money. 'The bank account was opened with forged credentials,' Yadav added. The accused had reportedly moved to Dubai in 2022, shortly after the ED launched its investigation into the HPZ Token racket. According to Faridabad Police, he returned to India around three weeks ago after the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed a lookout circular against him but ordered him to cooperate with investigators. Police said the man and his business partner were running a parallel cyber fraud operation alongside their hospitality ventures. 'He kept 30 per cent of the funds and routed the remaining to his Dubai-based partner, who managed the other end of the network,' Yadav said. The arrest follows a complaint filed in January 2024 by a Faridabad-based engineer who was duped in a fake stock market investment scheme promoted on social media. The victim is said to have transferred Dh880,000 to 11 different bank accounts, all linked to the scam. Faridabad Police said the man is the 12th person arrested in the case. Investigators are now trying to locate his associate and three others. 'We are in the process of issuing a lookout circular against his partner so he can be arrested if he enters India,' Yadav said. The HPZ Token scam has emerged as one of India's largest tech-enabled financial frauds. Victims were lured into downloading a mobile app and investing in so-called crypto-mining schemes. Early fake profits were shown to build trust, only for the funds to vanish once larger amounts were invested. The ED has so far frozen or attached assets worth Rs497 crore (Dh216 million) linked to the case and uncovered over 200 shell companies allegedly created by the suspect and his associates to conceal the money trail.
