Gal Gadot, Criticized For Comments On Gaza War, Opens Jerusalem Film Festival With Call To End War
Organisers pushed ahead with the Jerusalem film festival on Thursday despite regional conflicts, with a special appearance by Israeli Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, who has been criticised for comments on the Gaza war. Pro-Palestinian activists have attacked Gadot on social media for voicing support for the Israeli military, which has been accused of atrocities during its campaign in Gaza to crush the militant group Hamas and free Israeli hostages. She has also been criticised by right-wing media in Israel for urging an end to the war, which the government has vowed to continue until it destroys Hamas, despite international calls for a ceasefire. Israel's 12-day war with Iran last month had meanwhile threatened to derail the 42nd edition of the festival. It got under way on Thursday evening in an auditorium near Jerusalem's Old City, with Gadot -- also a star of "Fast and Furious" -- receiving a special award, to applause from thousands of spectators. The 40-year-old star, who was born near Tel Aviv, said in her acceptance speech that she was "praying for this (Gaza) war to end and for everyone here to finally have calm and security". "That will not be possible until the hostages come home." The Israeli military regularly denies intentionally targeting civilians in Gaza. The event's director Roni Mahadav-Levin told AFP meanwhile that during the June 12-24 war with Iran, organisers "spent two weeks in bomb shelters, trying to decide if we could keep the date of the festival" with flights cancelled and guests hesitating to come. One festival-goer, film student Ayal Sgerski, 29, said that the event was taking place under a "cloud" of conflict, with few international directors attending. "It is very difficult for the festival to draw films from around the world at the moment" due to opposition to the Gaza war, he complained. Mahadav-Levin said that organisers could not "expect to receive the same number of international guests as in a normal year". The event opened with a screening of "Sentimental Value" by Norwegian director Joachim Trier, who won an award at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The Jerusalem festival runs until July 26.

Han's Modified Mazda RX-7 Just Sold for $1.2 Million at Auction
The heavily modified 1992 RX-7 from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift just set a record for Mazda road cars at auction. The hammer fell on a winning bid of more than $1.2 million at this year's Bonhams' Goodwood auction. This is twice the amount paid for the previous record-setter from the Fast and Furious movies—a 1994 Toyota Supra that sold for $550,000. In the pantheon of the Fast and Furious films, Tokyo Drift is a bit of a dark horse pick as the best of them. It barely features either of the original two leads, has plenty of corny dialogue, and the plot is a little thin. On the other hand, the behind-the-scenes stuntwork is great, Han Lue (portrayed by Sung Kang) is such a charismatic character that he'll overcome his on-screen death, and the cars are as cool as they come. At this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, one deep-pocketed fan voted for the third Fast and Furious movie with their wallet. Bonhams Hitting a staggering $1.2 million at the Bonhams auction, a 1992 Mazda RX-7 with bodywork by Veilside just became one of the most expensive Mazdas ever sold. Even a casual fan would recognize its black-and-orange paint as the hero car driven by Han in Tokyo Drift, and as one of only two said to have survived filming, it crossed the finish line just past the seven-figure mark. Veilside is a Japanese tuner notable for its aerodynamic kits, and it's something of a staple of the Fast and Furious movies. This RX-7 wears the company's Fortune widebody body kit, which added just shy of seven inches of extra width, along with a huge rear spoiler and massive side vents. It's almost unrecognizable as a third-generation RX-7 apart from the roofline. Bonhams Given that the third-gen RX-7, or FD, is arguably the prettiest sports car from the golden age of Japanese performance, this probably isn't one for the purists. But given the provenance as a hero car seen on screens all over the world, it's little surprise this example of unbridled mid-2000s tuning culture cracked the million-dollar mark. Purchased by the current seller and shipped to the U.K. in 2008, just two years after Tokyo Drift's release, it's said to have been carefully stored, driven sparingly, and checked over by a local rotary specialist before the sale. The record amount nearly doubles the price paid for a Fast and Furious movie car—a 1994 Toyota Supra from the first two films that hit $550,000 four years ago. Bonhams With a new Fast and Furious film on the way, as well as a live-action drifting movie from Sung Kang in the works, this tuned RX-7 might prove to be a new generation's Bullitt Mustang. Hopefully, the new owner shows it off a little more this time around. Han would approve. Brendan McAleer Contributing Editor Brendan McAleer is a freelance writer and photographer based in North Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He grew up splitting his knuckles on British automobiles, came of age in the golden era of Japanese sport-compact performance, and began writing about cars and people in 2008. His particular interest is the intersection between humanity and machinery, whether it is the racing career of Walter Cronkite or Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's half-century obsession with the Citroën 2CV. He has taught both of his young daughters how to shift a manual transmission and is grateful for the excuse they provide to be perpetually buying Hot Wheels. Read full bio

Music meets WWE? Not so fast — Vin Diesel's ex co-star may miss SummerSlam 2025
WWE SummerSlam 2025 will make history in the world of professional wrestling. For the first time in over thirty years, the show will be presented in a two-night format on August 2nd and 3rd at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The hype of the show itself began with a very popular name in the music industry, who has also starred with Hollywood A-Lister Vin Diesel in his Fast and Furious franchise. However, witnessing recent events, there is a possibility that the star might just skip the Biggest Party of the Summer. Which top celebrity can miss WWE SummerSlam 2025? As the month began, WWE began building up the road to SummerSlam 2025. While they have advertised major stars like Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, and John Cena in recent weeks, there has been no mention of popular rapper Cardi B . Last year, she was featured in a video announcing the first-ever two-night SummerSlam and was revealed to be the host of the show. However, so far, WWE has not hyped, acknowledged her role in the event, or promoted her appearance in any of their broadcasts or shows. This comes as a surprising turn as her official announcement video is still live on WWE's official website, and Cardi B herself is a big name in the music and rap industry, a marketing WWE surely would have wanted to capitalize on for one of the biggest Premium Live Events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo What does Triple H have to say about Cardi B? WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H spoke about Cardi B during the Money in the Bank post-show media conference. The Game acknowledged that she was hard to control and that she would do whatever she pleased. He said, 'Can you see her, I don't know if anyone can control Cardi B, let me start with that. If she wants to, I don't think we can talk her out of it. Cardi is going to do whatever she's going to do and you're just hanging onto the tiger's tail a little bit there.' With SummerSlam only weeks away, it remains to be seen if Cardi B will skip the festivities or if WWE will finally acknowledge her involvement in their PLE set to make history in New Jersey this year.
