Altered video of Minneapolis mayoral candidate spreads online
"Look at me. Look at me. I am the mayor now," Fateh appears to say in the video, shared August 3, 2025 on X. Image Screenshot from X taken August 7, 2025 Similar posts spread across the platform as Fateh's campaign for mayor picked up steam after the city's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party -- the local branch of national Democrats -- endorsed him over two-term incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey. The video spreading online appears to mock Fateh's heritage -- and is altered. A reverse image search revealed the footage of Fateh was lifted from a 2022 hearing over ethics complaints brought against Fateh, who had recently been elected to the Minnesota State Senate. Fateh is seen wearing the same outfit in the original recording uploaded by the legislature (archived here). At no point during the session did Fateh make the comment in question. "This is AI-generated, and this is not something Omar Fateh has said," Fateh's co-campaign manager Graham Faulkner told AFP in an August 6 email. According to local news, a panel went on to dismiss the 2022 complaints against Fateh, lodged by Republican lawmakers who alleged that he had solicited free advertising from a Somali TV YouTube channel in exchange for introducing a bill that would have provided a grant to the network. The "I am the mayor now" quote appears to be a reference to "Captain Phillips," a starring actor Tom Hanks in which the character played by Barkhad Abdi, a Somali-American actor, says: "Look at me. Look at me. I am the captain now" (archived here). The line has become a meme in American pop culture. AFP has debunked other misinformation about US politics here.

Far-left mayoral candidates will make it harder for Democrats to ‘win back voters': Karl Rove
Republican strategist Karl Rove said Tuesday that far-left mayoral candidates will make it harder for Democrats to gain ground. 'The more that we get people like this representing the face of the Democratic Party, the harder it is to win back voters in the middle of American politics,' Rove said on Fox News's 'America's Newsroom' in a clip highlighted by Mediaite, speaking about Minnesota state Sen. Omar Fateh (D). Fateh, a self-described democratic socialist, recently earned the Minneapolis DFL's endorsement for the city's mayoral race. His clinching of the endorsement comes alongside another progressive candidate and democratic socialist, Zohran Mamdani, winning last month's Democratic Party primary for New York City mayor. 'I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor. This endorsement is a message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It's a mandate to build a city that works for all of us,' Fateh said in a post on the social platform X on July 19. Fateh's and Mamdani's success comes as there are heated debates within the Democratic Party about how to move forward in the wake of the 2024 elections, when Democrats lost their chances at power in the House, Senate and White House. 'The more left-wing the center of these big cities become, the more difficult it is for Democrats to win votes that, you know, they're going to be driving away votes, not only in rural America, suburban America, but they're also going to be driving away votes in urban America,' Rove said Tuesday. Rep. Laura Gillen (D-N.Y.) distanced herself from Mamdani last month, saying he was 'the wrong choice for New York.' 'Socialist Zohran Mamdani is too extreme to lead New York City,' Gillen said in a statement. 'His entire campaign has been built on unachievable promises and higher taxes, which is the last thing New York needs.' Akhilesh Menawat, a co-campaign manager for Fateh, said in a statement to The Hill that 'Karl Rove and Fox News don't decide who leads Minneapolis; the people who live and work here do.' 'Senator Omar Fateh has built the broadest coalition in this race because he delivers. He's passed tuition-free college and fair wages for rideshare drivers with bipartisan support,' he added. 'That's not extreme, that's exactly the leadership Minneapolis deserves.' Updated at 5:55 p.m. EDT Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 'Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin'; Sonu Sood's old college love letter for THIS Telugu girl resurfaces on the internet
Before becoming the man India admires today, Sonu Sood was just another young boy in love. During his engineering college days in Nagpur, Sonu had written a simple, handwritten love note to a girl who would later become his life partner, Sonali . The note, signed off with the famous line 'Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin,' recently resurfaced on his Instagram, taking many by surprise. It offered a rare glimpse into a personal chapter of his life that he usually guards with quiet dignity. The Woman Behind the Man As reported by Her zindagi, Sonali, a Telugu girl who was pursuing her MBA when she met Sonu, has been his anchor through thick and thin. From standing by him when he moved to Mumbai and shared a cramped 1BHK with three other strugglers to believing in him even when his dreams seemed distant, she's been there. In his own words, 'Initially, she was not happy when I wanted to be an actor, but today, she's proud of me.' Married in 1996, much before the camera lights found him, Sonali stayed out of the spotlight and let her husband chase the one in front of it. And that quiet support, Sonu says, made all the difference. Love That Outlasted Stardom Today, when Sonu Sood is celebrated not just as an actor but as a humanitarian who rose to the occasion during the migrant crisis of COVID-19, it's easy to forget the years of grit, rejection, and sacrifice behind his smile. But Sonu hasn't. In every interview, every offhand remark about family, and especially in that one note he posted with the words '#memories,' it's clear: fame may have arrived late, but love was always on time. Professionally, Sonu Sood was last seen in the action thriller 'Fateh'. Sonu Sood Rescues Snake With Bare Hands, Urges Fans Not to Try It
