Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. Nine FRU members were killed and nine others injured after the truck they were in crashed with a lorry in Teluk Intan, Perak, on May 12. Those who died were S Perumal, 44, Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, Pozli Jaudin, 41, Nurit Pandak, 34, Amiruddin Zabri, 38, Hilmi Azlan, 38, Akmal Muhamad, 35, Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, and Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.

Audience moved to tears during pantomime of FRU crash tragedy
IPOH: A sombre atmosphere filled the air at the Banquet Hall of the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building as attendees were moved to tears by a pantomime performance paying tribute to victims of the tragic Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) accident in Teluk Intan. The 15-minute performance, titled 'Sang Beret Merah' (The Red Beret), depicted the final journey of the FRU officers who had been assigned on duty during the Chitra Pournami festival in Teluk Intan on May 13, which later resulted in a tragic crash. Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, also witnessed the performance after gracing the Perak state-level Warriors' Day 2025 celebration earlier. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was moved to tears. The performance featured 20 police officers alongside 30 members of the Persatuan Deklamasi Lakon Perak. Accompanying the act was a poem recital by the state Cultural Council Deputy President Azmi Ismail, ASP Samsudin Hussin from the Perak Contingent Police Headquarters and Detective Sergeant Major Bashira Sharif from the Criminal Investigation Department. The performance grew even more emotional when original footage of the FRU members involved in the accident was shown. The tragic incident that shook the nation occurred about 8.50am, involving a truck carrying 15 FRU personnel from Unit 5 Ipoh. The group was returning to Ipoh after completing their assignment in Teluk Intan when their vehicle collided with a lorry transporting stones along Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam. Nine FRU personnel were killed in the crash, two were seriously injured, and seven others sustained minor injuries. Those killed were Sergeant S. Perumal, 44, from Lahat, Ipoh; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, from Tanjung Rambutan, Ipoh; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin, 41, from Gunung Rapat, Ipoh; Corporal Nurit Pandak, 34, (Kampar) and Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, (Gopeng). Also killed were Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan, 38, from Taiping; Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad, 35, from Kuala Kurau; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, from Ipoh; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28, from Lunas, Kedah.

Nation honours nine fallen FRU heroes in poignant Warriors' Day tribute
IPOH: Tears welled up and silence filled the air as 'Sang Beret Merah' delivered a powerful, wordless tribute to Malaysia's fallen heroes, stirring deep emotions during the state-level Warriors' Day celebration. The poignant performance paid homage to nine brave souls from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Sungai Senam, who lost their lives in a devastating road accident on May 13. With raw emotion and quiet dignity, policemen and the Perak Dramatisation Association relived their comrades' final moments through powerful gestures and haunting silence that moved the audience to tears. Among those present was the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who joined the audience in a moment of shared, silent grief. As the pantomime unfolded, many struggled to contain their emotions. Quiet sobs echoed through the Dewan Bankuet here, especially when a heart-wrenching montage played on screen, showing the FRU officers smiling inside their truck, unaware that these fleeting moments of calm would be their last. The tribute continued with a soul-stirring poetry recital by Perak Cultural Council deputy president Azmi Ismail, Assistant Superintendent Samsudin Hussin, and detective Sergeant Major Bashira Sharif from the Perak Police headquarters. Their voices, heavy with sorrow, trembled as they spoke of courage, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. The tragedy struck around 9am on May 13, when a truck carrying 18 members of FRU Unit 5 was hit by a heavily loaded lorry believed to have suffered a steering failure. Eight officers died at the scene. Another succumbed to his injuries at Teluk Intan Hospital, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak for families, colleagues, and a nation in mourning. The unit had been on its way back to base after completing duty for the Chitra Pournami festival in Hilir Perak, a mission that would, tragically, become their last. The nine deceased members were Sergeant S. Perumal; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin; Corporal Nurit Pandak; Corporal Amiruddin Zabri; Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan; Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar.

New safety measures under review after deadly FRU accident
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are currently in discussions with various stakeholders regarding improvements to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) related to personnel movement and convoy safety, following the fatal crash involving members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said they are also reviewing technical proposals and their compliance with road safety standards and regulations set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). "Following the tragic accident that occurred in Teluk Intan on May 13, which claimed nine lives involving members of the FRU, the police have taken several immediate and comprehensive steps to improve the SOP related to personnel movement and convoy safety. "Regarding the expected enforcement date of the new SOP and its monitoring method, the police are currently in discussions with various relevant stakeholders, including on technical proposals and compliance with road safety standards and JPJ regulations," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who had queried the matter. He outlined the key preliminary findings by the police on weaknesses in the existing SOP that contributed to the accident. These include the use of tactical lorries to transport personnel over long distances without basic safety systems such as seat belts; insufficient ventilation and interior lighting in the lorries; disorganised interior space lacking separation between passengers and equipment; and vehicles not designed for long-distance travel, which can cause fatigue and stress to personnel. "The existing vehicles were not designed for long-distance endurance, which can cause fatigue and stress to personnel," he said.

[UPDATED] Immediate licence suspension for commercial drivers in accidents
KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has decided to immediately suspend the vocational licence of commercial vehicle drivers involved in road accidents, pending police investigations. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said that if drivers were found guilty or issued a notice for violating any provision under the Road Transport Act 1987, their vocational licences would be revoked in accordance with Section 56(4)(b) of the same Act. "As soon as an accident occurs and as soon as we receive a preliminary report from the police involving a bus or lorry driver, we will immediately suspend that driver's vocational licence. "Later, if police investigations find that the driver is not at fault, we will rescind the suspension. "However, if the driver is found to be at fault, we will take further action in accordance with the law, such as cancelling the driver's license, revoking permits and so on," he said after the MyLesen B2 licence presentation ceremony here today. Vocational licences comprised the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence for passenger vehicles and Goods Driving Licence (GDL) for goods vehicles. Aedy said suspension of vocational licences had begun, starting with the lorry driver involved in a fatal accident involving nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) on May 13. "As of today, we have suspended five," he said, adding that this included the bus driver involved in the accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. To ensure that commercial vehicle drivers remained competent, Aedy said the RTD would require all drivers involved in accidents, even if not guilty, to pass a refresher course before their vocational licence could be reactivated or removed from the suspension list. "All drivers will also be subject to a fee to cover the cost of the training programme." He said the refresher course will cover re-education on driving competency, including road regulations, safe driving practices, mindset change and safe vehicle handling. "RTD will also set the duration of the programme, which must be successfully completed by the individual involved," he said, adding that further details on the programme will be announced in the near future. Aedy said the move was part of improvement efforts aimed at ensuring that all commercial vehicle drivers complied with road regulations, besides driving responsibly and safely on public roads. "Previously, such measures were not implemented. However, we are now taking a more decisive approach. "I would like to remind all operators, including bus and lorry companies, as well as those involved in goods and public transport services, to ensure that their drivers adhere to all regulations and responsibilities entrusted to them." Meanwhile, regarding the enforcement of seatbelt use among bus drivers and passengers, Aedy said up to yesterday, a total of 510 summonses had been issued. Of that total, 80 summonses were issued to drivers, 396 to bus attendants and passengers, 26 to backseat passengers, and eight to bus companies for not installing seat belts. Starting July 1, it became mandatory for all drivers and passengers of express and tour buses, manufactured after January 2020, to wear seat belts. For buses built before 2020, operators would be given a grace period to install seat belts.
