Eflin goes seven scoreless innings and Orioles beat White Sox 2-1

Zach Eflin allowed four hits over seven shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday. Eflin (4-2) struck out six and walked one in his first scoreless outing this season while lowering his ERA nearly a run to 4.46. Ramón Urías broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly off Sean Burke (3-6). Ryan Mountcastle then swiped home on a double steal, then left before the eighth inning with right hamstring discomfort. Bryan Baker worked a perfect eighth in a game originally scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. that was moved up to 4:30 p.m. because of expected inclement weather in the area, before Felix Bautista gave up Andrew Benintendi's RBI double in the ninth then stranded two for his ninth save. Burke worked six innings after opener Jared Shuster worked an inning plus a batter as the White Sox fell to .200 (6-24) on the road. Chicago's Miguel Vargas singled and Benintendi walked to put two on with one out in the seventh. Eflin escaped by striking out Luis Robert Jr. swinging and Joshua Palacios Jr. looking, the latter on a 3-2 cutter that home plate umpire D.J. Rayburn said caught the outer corner of the zone. Eflin got within six batters of completing his fourth career shutout and his first since 2020. His last nine-inning shutout helped Philadelphia win 7-0 win at Kansas City on May 11, 2019. Chicago right-hander Davis Martin (2-5, 3.45 ERA) will try to extend his streak of quality starts to four on Saturday after yielding only five combined runs in his last three outings (20 IP). He faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (4-5-, 5.02), who is looking for consecutive wins after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless frames in a 5-1 victory at Boston last Sunday.

Orioles ride Tomoyuki Sugano's strong start and Gunnar Henderson's 2 RBIs to 4-1 win over Angels

Tomoyuki Sugano gave up one run and three hits in 7 1/3 innings, Gunnar Henderson hit a solo homer and drove in an insurance run in the ninth with a triple, and the Baltimore Orioles snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Sugano (4-2) used a six-pitch mix to strike out five and walk none during a 93-pitch effort in which he threw 65 strikes. Yennier Cano replaced Sugano with one out in the eighth and gave up a single to Jo Adell and a walk to pinch hitter Jorge Soler. But the right-hander won a 13-pitch duel with Zach Neto, who fouled off six two-strike pitches before whiffing on a 95-mph sinker. Felix Bautista struck out two of three batters in the ninth for his seventh save. Henderson's first-inning homer came off Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (1-4), who gave up three earned runs and six hits in five innings, striking out five and walking three. Ryan O'Hearn and Tyler O'Neill walked to open the second, and Jackson Holliday's RBI single pushed the lead to 2-0. Emmanuel Rivera's RBI single to left made it 3-0. The Angels cut the deficit to 3-1 in the seventh when Yoán Moncada tripled and scored on Taylor Ward's groundout. Key moment Reid Detmers, who was rocked for 12 runs and 11 hits while retiring one batter in his previous three appearances, relieved Hendricks with two on and no outs in the sixth. The left-hander struck out Holliday, got Laureano to fly to center and Rivera to line out to second to keep the Angels close. Key stat Henderson's fourth homer of the season snapped a streak of 16 straight games in which the Orioles had not scored in the first inning. Up next RHP Kyle Gibson (0-1, 14.09 ERA) will start Saturday night's game for the Orioles against Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz (1-5, 5.79).
