Diocese of Belgaum condemns arrests of Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh
The Diocese of Belgaum has condemned the arrest of nuns hailing from Kerala in Chhattisgarh on the charge of trafficking in human beings and religious conversion. 'We strongly condemn the arrests of two Catholic nuns by the Chhattisgarh Police. But we urge Christians and others in civil society to pray for the arrested nuns and the youth while raising their voices against the arrests,' Bishop of Diocese of Belgaum Reverend Derek Fernandes said in Belagavi on Wednesday. Two Catholic nuns from Kerala, Sister Preeti Mary and Sister Vandana Francis, belonging to the Congregation of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, along with a youth named Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh on the charge of trafficking in human beings and making an attempt to convert girls. 'The Sisters of this Congregation used to work in our Diocese in Bagalkot earlier. We are indebted to the amount of service these sisters have rendered to the people of Bagalkot irrespective of caste or religion. While this has sparked widespread controversy and protests, joining Christians from across the nation, devotees of the Diocese of Belagavi condemn the action meted out to the innocent nuns and the youth in the strongest of terms,' Bishop Fernandes said. 'While we raise our voices against this and pray intensely that better sense may prevail and the arrested find relief, it is to be noted that in the recent times there has been a surge of such incidents and it is high time that we raise our voices against such incidents,' Bishop Fernandes said.

Bryan Mbeumo looks forward to Bruno Fernandes link-up at Man United
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON – Bryan Mbeumo says he is excited about linking up with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, as he prepares for life at Old Trafford following his move from Brentford. After many weeks of drawn-out talks, the 25-year-old finally joined the Red Devils last week for £65 million plus a potential £6 million in add-ons. The Cameroon winger, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists for Brentford in the English Premier League last season, has signed a five-year deal with United, becoming their third signing of the summer transfer window. Mbeumo told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast that Fernandes – who scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season – was the player he was most looking forward to playing with. 'Everyone sees in the past years, he can shoot, he can cross, he can do crazy ball,' he said. 'Yeah, for a striker, you just enjoy that.' Mbeumo is hoping to benefit from the experience of the Portuguese midfielder, who said last month he had rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at United despite their struggles last season. The team finished 15th in the league and also missed out on Europa League glory after losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the final. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'You just need to make the run and he's going to play you in the right space every time. 'But of course, you can have a little discussion to make him know how I prefer the balls and how I'm feeling the best to have the ball. 'But at a certain point, there is only one way, even if it's not the one you like, you have to do the run and he's going to put the ball in a good position.' Mbeumo's arrival follows the signings of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Paraguay left-back Diego Leon, from Cerro Porteno. United boss Ruben Amorim also heaped praise on Fernandes after the midfielder scored twice in a 2-1 pre-season win over fellow Premier League club West Ham United in New Jersey last weekend. Asked about Fernandes' importance to the team, Amorim told reporters after the win: 'It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it's not just that. 'I think now he has more players, I feel, to help him to lead the group, and that is a good thing. He is our leader and really important, not just on the field but off the field. He leads by example.' Meanwhile, United have also recently been linked with Ollie Watkins – RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is also a reported target – and Mbeumo described his former Brentford teammate as the 'complete striker'. He said of Watkins: 'He's like a complete striker. He can do a lot of things.' United are currently on a summer tour of the United States, preparing for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17. AFP, REUTERS

HC stays Morjim beautification work over green concerns
Panaji: The high court on Tuesday ordered an immediate stay on the beautification work being carried out on Morjim beach through Goa Tourism Development Corporation. The HC issued a notice to govt after a petitioner showed the court pictures purportedly of the site where sand dunes were being destroyed with heavy machinery. Captain Gerald Fernandes, a former Indian Army officer and resident of Morjim, filed the PIL seeking urgent intervention of the HC to halt the ongoing work at the ecologically sensitive Morjim beach. This site is an officially designated turtle nesting area for the endangered olive ridley turtles , safeguarded under the Wildlife Protection Act and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 2011. Fernandes, represented by advocate Om D'Costa, submitted to the HC that the beach beautification project, valued at Rs 9.8 crore by GTDC, is proceeding without mandatory statutory approvals and without a construction licence from the panchayat. The flattening of the sand dunes on the beach is being carried out, the plea said. The development activity poses an imminent and irreparable threat to the turtle nesting habitat, sand dunes, and natural ecosystem of Morjim beach, the plea said. The panchayat and Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority granted NOCs in apparent disregard of the site's protected status and its proximity within 200 metres to the high tide line, Fernandes submitted to the division bench comprising justices Bharati Dangre and Nivedita Mehta. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Enjoy 100% Pure New Zealand and fly Air New Zealand Fly Air New Zealand Undo Fernandes, who is a recipient of Goa govt's wildlife conservation award for protecting the olive ridley habitat at Morjim, has also been recently nominated by the HC to the noise monitoring committee. He stated that beaches and their attendant sand dune vegetation are beautiful in themselves and don't need concrete props from any external agency. 'In fact, the sand dunes and sand dune vegetation have major ecological functions and provide ecosystem services,' Fernandes submitted to the HC. He said, 'The project proponent is actively committing to destroying Goa's natural tourism assets instead of protecting them.' GTDC has been involved in launching a similar project to beautify Baina beach at Vasco, which was cancelled by the HC. A second beach beautification project at the same location a decade later was also cancelled on the grounds of violation of the CRZ notification, which is pending before the Supreme Court after GTDC challenged it, Fernandes said.
