Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. receives praise from rival's star
The ever-growing rivalry that has been brewing between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers has made for some very entertaining baseball in Southern California the past few years. However, some soft spots in some players on both sides has also made for some equally heartwarming moments as well. And during the MLB All-Star Game activities on Monday, another example of that was shown as Dodgers catcher Will Smith, who was selected as the starting backstop for the National League, gave his props to the Padres' Dominican star. "He's giving 100 percent every time he goes out there, which is cool," said the star catcher. "When he's on, he's better than anybody almost. Everybody is human here. We all have slumps. We all have years we're not performing at our best. I don't know his stats currently, but he deserves to be here." On a fighting Padres team that still finds themselves dueling with the Boys in Blue for control of the National League West, Tatis is currently boasting a .269 batting average with 16 home runs and 42 runs batted in. Tatis was one of five players that represented San Diego in the Midsummer Classic, along with third baseman Manny Machado and relief pitchers Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon, and Robert Suarez. The Dodgers also had five players represent the team in the Game with Smith, designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, first baseman Freddie Freeman, and starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Jackson Merrill snaps slump with 2 HRs to help Padres edge Phillies
July 13 - Manny Machado's sacrifice fly snapped a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday as the San Diego Padres clinched a series win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-4 decision. Machado's drive to deep right field scored Fernando Tatis Jr., who started the rally with a one-out single off Tanner Banks (2-1) and raced to third on Luis Arraez's single to center. Rookie David Morgan (1-1) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for his first MLB win. Jeremiah Estrada, pitching for the third straight night, got the last three outs for his third save of the year. Neither starter was involved in the decision. Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler gave up four runs off six hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings of work. San Diego's Yu Darvish lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs with three walks and two whiffs. Darvish got himself into trouble in the second inning, falling behind 2-0. Alec Bohm reached after getting plunked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Darvish then stopped a Nick Castellanos comebacker but threw wildly to first for an error that allowed Bohm to score. Castellanos scored soon after on a J.T. Realmuto double to left-center. That lead seemed secure with Wheeler, who had allowed just three runs in his last 40 innings, on the mound. But the Padres erased it in their half of the second when Gavin Sheets doubled and trotted home on Jackson Merrill's two-run homer to left-center, his sixth of the season. Later in the inning, Jake Cronenworth doubled and scored on a two-out single by Martin Maldonado. Darvish held that lead until the fifth, when the Phillies went ahead 4-3 on a two-run single to left by Edmundo Sosa. He came into the game after Bohm left with a left rib contusion, the result of being hit by Darvish. Merrill, who entered the game in a 5-for-53 skid that dropped his average to .258, tied it in the sixth when he lifted his second homer of the day over the fence in right-center field. He hadn't homered in his previous 35 games. --Field Level Media

Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado go yard in 4-3 win for Padres
For the first time in recent memory, the big bats for the San Diego Padres made some noise — on the same night. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each homered, and Xander Bogaerts added an RBI-double to lead the Padres to a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park, Thursday night. The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the top of the third inning off Padres starter Randy Vasquez to take a 2-0 lead to end the top of the inning. San Diego wasted no time in offering a response in the bottom half of the inning. Advertisement Tatis Jr. led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to center field that cut the lead to 2-1. San Diego was not able to get any additional runs in the frame, but the home run from Tatis Jr. provided a much needed sign of life for the Padres offense. San Diego was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Jake Cronenworth RBI-groundout. Jackson Merrill walked to start the inning and he advanced to third on a Jose Iglesias single. Cronenworth followed with a groundout to first base, which allowed Merrill to score and pushed Iglesias to second where he stayed until the inning ended. The Padres jumped ahead of the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the fifth inning when Machado launched a solo home run deep into the left field stands to lead off the inning, putting San Diego up, 3-2. The Padres added a second run in the inning when Gavin Sheets hit a single to right. He came in to score to give San Diego a 4-2 lead when Bogaerts hit a double to left field. Bogaerts would eventually reach third base, but was unable to score. Advertisement Arizona did not go away quietly. The Diamondbacks added a run in the top of the seventh inning and threatened for more, but Jason Adam was able to work out of trouble, keeping the Padres in front, 4-3. San Diego was poised to respond to the Arizona run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sheets walked and moved to second on a Bogaerts sacrifice bunt. Merrill walked and Iglesias singled to load the bases with one out. Cronenworth struck out for the second out of the inning and Trenton Brooks was called on to pinch-hit for Martin Maldonado. Brooks grounded into a fielder's choice with a ground ball to short, keeping the Padres from adding to their lead. Jeremiah Estrada bailed out Elias Diaz in the top of the eighth. With two outs and a man on for Arizona, the runner at first, Blaze Alexander, stole second base. Diaz threw down to second and the ball sailed beyond the reach of Bogaerts and into center field. Alexander moved to third on the error. Corbin Carroll took the next pitch at the top of the zone on a 2-2 pitch and struck out looking, leaving Alexander at third. San Diego's All-Star closer Robert Suarez came on for the save in the top of the ninth inning. He earned his MLB leading 27th save with a clean inning, facing just three hitters to seal the win for the Padres.
