Allegri returns to AC Milan as head coach for second time

AC Milan appointed Massimiliano Allegri as the new head coach on Friday, a day after sacking Sergio Conceicao, with the Italian tasked with transforming the struggling club into title contenders again in his second stint. Allegri will replace the Portuguese coach who came in mid-season to help them win the Italian Super Cup but was sacked after the club ultimately failed to qualify for any European competition after a disappointing eighth-placed finish. Their final game of the season, a 2-0 home win over Monza, was overshadowed by fan protests against the club ownership and hierarchy. Milan did not mention the length of Allegri's contract. The 57-year-old's first stint lasted three-and-a-half seasons where he took charge in 178 games before he was sacked when the club found themselves 30 points behind leaders Juve in January 2014. The Italian will also have to wait to take charge of his team in an official game as he has not finished serving a suspension after being sent off in his last game for Juve in May 2024. Juve won the Coppa Italia beating Atalanta in the final but Allegri sent off towards the end of the game for his fierce protests over refereeing decisions, a reason Juve cited for his dismissal. Milan, who started the season with Paulo Fonseca in charge before Conceicao took over, finished 13th in the new Champions League group stage before they were knocked out by Dutch side Feyenoord in the knockout phase playoffs. Conceicao's side nearly salvaged their season with a Coppa Italia run but lost in the final where Bologna won 1-0 to end a 51-year trophy drought and also qualify for the Europa League. Seven-times winners of the Champions League, Milan have not won the competition since their last triumph in the 2006-07 season while their last Scudetto came in the 2021-22 campaign. Allegri, who previously guided Milan to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season, last managed Juventus.

Chaos at San Siro: Milan sack Conceicao after European miss, Allegri return looms

AC Milan have parted company with manager Sergio Conceicao after just half a season in charge. The 50-year-old replaced Paulo Fonseca in December. He had lasted only six months in the role. Conceicao's dismissal comes after Milan finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on European qualification for the 2025-26 season. Advertisement His tenure began with promise, notably lifting the Supercoppa Italiana after a dramatic 3-2 win over Inter Milan in January. However, results quickly unravelled. Milan were knocked out of the Champions League play-off round by Feyenoord the following month, and fell short in the Coppa Italia final, losing to Bologna. The club confirmed his departure with a brief statement thanking Conceicao and his staff for their efforts and professionalism. They also acknowledged his role in delivering Milan's 50th major trophy, but the achievement was not enough to secure his long-term future. Conceicao had previously enjoyed significant success at Porto, winning 11 trophies in six years, but was unable to replicate that consistency in Italy. Advertisement His sacking continues a turbulent period at Milan, who also dismissed Scudetto-winning coach Stefano Pioli last summer. RedBird Capital's ownership has come under intense scrutiny from supporters during this chaotic spell. Before their final Serie A match of the season, thousands of Milan ultras marched from Casa Milan to San Siro in protest. Fans unveiled banners and spelt out the words 'go home' in the Curva Sud, demanding that owner Gerry Cardinale sell his stake in the club. There were also chants in support of former captain Paolo Maldini, sacked as a director last year, and the late Silvio Berlusconi, who oversaw the club's golden era. Advertisement The unrest off the pitch has mirrored the instability on it. Since winning the Serie A title in 2022, Milan have lifted just one trophy – this season's Supercoppa – in three years. Massimiliano Allegri, recently dismissed by Juventus, could return to the San Siro. Meanwhile, the club have appointed ex-Lazio sporting director Igli Tare to help steer a new course. Conceicao departs with only six wins in his final 17 league matches, leaving Milan at a crossroads once again.

What Arne Slot said on Rangers contender Francesco Farioli

Slot had a wonderful first season in English football, wrestling the title back from Manchester City as the Reds lifted it for the first time in five years. He did so in style with the Anfield club runaway leaders and earning plenty of praise in the process. However, the Dutchman had one eye on what was happening back in his homeland as Ajax threw away a nine-point lead to allow PSV to win the Eredivisie, his old club Feyenoord sitting third. Read more: Francesco Farioli's Ajax exit explained amid Rangers boss talks Steven Gerrard out of Rangers manager running despite King 'obvious choice' call Farioli had instilled confidence and vigour back at Ajax after a poor campaign before he came in, finishing fifth. But he decided to quit after that title collapse. Slot defended him, insisting PSV had more firepower up front which is out of the coach's control. And he also hit out at claims he plays defensive football. The Liverpool boss said: "You can do very well as a manager, but in the end you have to have players who make the difference. "Example: from what I've seen, I think Francesco Farioli is a very good manager. I've heard that he was only defensive and all that, but when I watched Ajax, I always saw a good build-up from the back, where they could always find a free man and put the opponents under good pressure. "That's what you influence as a manager. Farioli was just unlucky that PSV and Feyenoord had a lot of much, much better strikers than he did."

Milan part ways with Conceicao after disappointing season

May 29 (Reuters) - AC Milan have sacked coach Sergio Conceicao, the Serie A side announced on Thursday, following a disappointing season in which they finished ninth in the league and missed out on European competition for the first time since 2019. "The Club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the team over the past few months," Milan said in a statement. Conceicao was appointed in December as a replacement for Paulo Fonseca and got off to an impressive start as he led Milan to victory in the Italian Super Cup in his second match in charge. However, results in the league did not improve under the Portuguese and they were also eliminated from the Champions League in a playoff loss to Dutch side Feyenoord in February. Milan's last hope of salvaging the season ended earlier in May with a bitter 1–0 loss to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final. Conceicao was not on the touchline for the season's final match against Monza at San Siro, having received a one-match ban after being sent off in the defeat by AS Roma last weekend — a result that ended Milan's last hope of securing a European spot.
