Buick confident his Classic aces can strike again at Epsom
Having completed the 2000 and 1000 Guineas double over the Rowley Mile in early May, Buick is in an enviable position as the same two horses prepare to line up at Epsom later this week. He said: 'Every year you go into Oaks and Derby week, it is always exciting but of course I must admit this year there is a little bit more excitement as both of our Guineas winners are going to turn up. Naturally it is exciting week for all of us.' Should the Charlie Appleby-trained duo both emerge triumphant on the Surrey Downs, Buick will become the first jockey ever to win the first four Classics in the same season, but he is not getting carried away. William Buick celebrates winning the 2000 Guineas on Ruling Court (David Davies/The Jockey Club) 'We'd like to just take one step at a time, that's a big ask, it's a huge thing to do. Winning both Guineas was a big achievement in itself and we'll just take each race as it comes,' he added. 'Both horses are really well. I haven't sat on Ruling Court but I've sat on Desert Flower once. Everything they've been doing has been really routine. Immediately after Newmarket they recovered well and everyone has been very happy with them, it's been quite smooth.' Ruling Court narrowly denied the subsequent Irish Guineas hero Field Of Gold at Newmarket and he will be stepping into the unknown over Epsom's mile and a half, but Buick is hopeful the Justify colt's stamina will stand up to the test. The @betfred 2000 Guineas is BLUE 🔵 Ruling Court beats Field Of Gold to deny John Gosden again 👊 — Newmarket Racecourse (@NewmarketRace) May 3, 2025 He said: 'We're confident he will get a mile and a quarter. There are so many horses that go to Epsom with those sort of credentials. Very few three-year-olds have gone the full mile and a half before the Derby, most are trying it for the first time bar a select few who run in the Lingfield Trial or the Chester Vase, so you never quite know until the day. 'They do say if you get a mile and a quarter you've a chance of getting a mile and a half round Epsom and most good horses are well balanced, do everything you ask and have a good turn of foot, which he has. I was asking him for an effort going into the dip at Newmarket and he responded – he never needed any real help. 'He's well-balanced, travels well through his races and has a good turn of foot so in that regard he ticks all the boxes. He's a high-quality colt.' Buick is similarly unconcerned about the razzmatazz of Derby day getting the better of Ruling Court, adding: 'Nothing has ever given us the impression he won't handle it, but it really is a different day. 'There's a lot of people, the fanfare, there's a lot of noise, it's a long canter down so that in itself is a challenge. We don't expect it to be a problem but you respect the occasion and try to take every precaution you can to get him to the start in a good frame of mind. 'We all still get the buzz before the Derby, it is our most important race and everyone would be of the same opinion – it's our Holy Grail.' William Buick on board Desert Flower following her Guineas triumph (David Davies/The Jockey Club) Just under 24 hours before Ruling Court's bid for Derby glory, Desert Flower is set to line up as a hot favourite for the Betfred Oaks. Unbeaten in five career starts, the Night Of Thunder filly also has her stamina to prove, but Buick said: 'I don't want to sound like a broken record but they are similar horses in regard to distance, neither have gone beyond a mile, I'm very confident about 10 furlongs and we'll see about a mile and a half. 'Desert Flower is a high-class filly and we've always thought the world of her. She has never stepped a foot wrong. 'She's well-balanced, she travels well through her races, she relaxes, she's tactically incredibly versatile and I don't think Epsom will pose any problem to her. 'She's always been strong towards the end of her races, as you could see in the Guineas where she had to make her own running and she was strong when she hit the rising ground. I'm hopeful of her getting the trip. 'I've ridden in the Oaks a few times and never quite managed to pull it off. It would mean a lot to win it, the Classics are what it is all about, each season you set out to find a Classic horse for the Guineas, Epsom and the St Leger, they are our most important races.' While Buick is not taking for granted, it is clear confidence is high. He added: 'I feel like I'm on the two best horses. There is of course the question about the distance as neither has been beyond a mile before, but I do feel like I'm on the two best horses. 'Horses will either stay or they won't, it's as simple as that. You have to ride them accordingly but equally you can't make a horse stay. Where you find out is inside the last couple of furlongs and you won't get an indication before that. 'To be going to Epsom with two horses of the calibre of these two is a pleasure, so fingers crossed everything goes well.'

Royal Ascot free bets and betting offers 2025
Royal Ascot (June 17-21) is fast approaching and this five-day bonanza of top-class Flat action is one of the most eagerly anticipated weeks in the horse racing calendar. The meeting always opens with a spectacular card on the Tuesday – three of the first four races are Group 1 contests and there are a further five top-level events over the next four days. As ever, there are a huge number of generous betting offers available from online bookmakers for Royal Ascot, which is arguably the best week of racing in the entire Flat season. Such promos give punters numerous opportunities to profit from what is certainly one of the most prestigious meetings (and, of course, social gatherings) in the world. The action gets going with the Queen Anne Stakes – a Group 1 race for the older milers – on the Tuesday, which also features the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes for the sprinters and the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes for the leading three-year-olds over a mile. The impressive Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Field Of Gold is the headline act for the St James's Palace, if not the entire day. Wednesday features the 1m 2f Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes and on Thursday, which is Ladies' Day, it's the 2m 4f Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup. On Friday there's a Group 1 double-header – the Commonwealth Cup for three-year-old sprinters and the Coronation Stakes for three-year-old fillies over a mile – plus there's another chance for the speedsters on Saturday in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. That's eight top-level contests across the five days in total, and of course there are a host of big-field handicaps, as well as an array of competitive-looking two-year-old races that could unearth some stars of the future. Betting sites are at their most generous with offers and promotions for the big festivals and Royal Ascot is as good as it gets in the horse racing world. When it comes to the handicaps, look out for the bookies with the most generous each-way terms – although extra place races won't be limited to just the handicaps, as many other contests will have big fields and with firms paying well beyond the standard place terms. There will also be loads of boosted odds deals including on some of the week's highest-profile runners. Rosallion (Queen Anne Stakes), Lead Artist (Queen Anne Stakes), Los Angeles (Prince of Wales's Stakes), Illinois (Ascot Gold Cup) and Lake Victoria (Coronation Stakes) are a few of the star horses set for Royal Ascot. Existing customers of horse racing betting sites will be able to find an array of bets with enhanced prices, but it is new customers who can reap the most generous rewards. Bookmakers look to attract new sign-ups by hugely boosting the odds of certain horses. For example, a horse who is generally priced at 2/1 to win could be available at 33/1 for new customers. Such deals may be limited to small stakes, with any winnings beyond the regular odds being paid out as free bets. Take a look at the table above to discover the numerous betting offers available on this year's Royal Ascot.

Field Of Gold gets Classic redemption in Irish 2,000 Guineas as Antino confirms star status
It was another big day in the saddle for Irish jockey Colin Keane. Photo: Kenneth Chan Field Of Gold secured Classic redemption for John and Thady Gosden in a Group One Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (1,600m) rout at the Curragh on Saturday. After suffering an agonising defeat in the Group One Betfred 2,000 Guineas (1,600m) at Newmarket three weeks earlier, the Gosdens were vindicated by their decision to remove Kieran Shoemark from the saddle in favour of Colin Keane, who steered the Kingman galloper to an impressive success. Held up in midfield, Keane kept things simple, making his move down the outer and the pair quickened up smartly to beat ownermate Cosmic Year by just under four lengths. This was IMPRESSIVE 🤩 Field Of Gold dominated the @Tattersalls_ie Irish 2000 Guineas field, emulating his sire Kingman 🏆@curraghrace — Racing TV (@RacingTV) May 24, 2025 In doing so, Field of Gold emulated his sire Kingman in winning the first Irish Classic of the season. There was also redemption for Aidan O'Brien's Lake Victoria, who left behind a poor performance in the Group One Betfred 1,000 Guineas (1,600m) to run away with the Group One Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas (1,600m). Locked away in the box seat under Ryan Moore, the pair were screaming for room at the 600m pole. Moore didn't panic, however, and extricated Lake Victoria out at the 400m pole before running down long-time leader California Dreamer in the final furlong and sauntering away. LAKE VICTORIA wins the Irish 1000 Guineas! 🏆 What a day for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore! @curraghrace @Tattersalls_ie | @coolmorestud — Racing TV (@RacingTV) May 25, 2025 It formed part of a four-timer for Moore on Sunday, with the global superstar securing the other top-level race on the card, the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup (2,000m), on Los Angeles. In Australia, Antino was a dominant winner of the Group One Doomben Cup (2,000m) in a race where Pride Of Jenni bitterly disappointed. Ciaron Maher's mare went off at a quick pace – as is her want – but came back to the field coming off the turn, with Antino scorching round the outside and quickening away from the field in a matter of strides. Antino is an absolute star! The Queenslander dominates the Doomben Cup for @tonygollan 🏆 @blake_shinn — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 24, 2025 It was a second Group One for the Redwood galloper, while Matthew Poon Ming-fai did Hong Kong proud by finishing sixth on roughie Klondike after a ground-saving trip. 'Really happy how he ran. He tried hard and ran well. Next start a bit further, he'll run much better,' said Poon.

Field Of Gold flies clear to claim Irish Guineas glory
Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the son of Kingman was beaten half a length after finishing fast and late under Kieran Shoemark in the British mile Classic three weeks ago. Sent off the evens favourite for the Irish equivalent, new pilot Colin Keane never had a moment of worry aboard Field Of Gold, who made smooth progress with a couple of furlongs to run before fairly sprinting clear. Field Of Gold came home a cosy three-and-three-quarter-length victor over his fellow Juddmonte-owned runner Cosmic Year, with Hotazhell a further three-quarters of a length back in third. The winner was following the same route as his sire Kingman, who was also trained by John Gosden and suffered a half-length defeat at Newmarket in 2014 before going on to triumph at the Curragh as part of four subsequent Group One strikes. 'We did it with his father but I do remember coming here years ago with The Minstrel, when I was working for Vincent O'Brien, and it doesn't always work out that way,' said John Gosden. 'He's right up there with his father, I think he's as good as his father right now. 'Juddmonte have wonderful farms here and rear great stock and have a lot of people employed here. They are beautifully managed and controlled by (European racing manager) Barry Mahon. 'To that extent, we have to be thankful to them, because good horses don't drop out of the sky. He had to come back here to win because this is his home turf. 'The Irish Guineas is on a very fair track and I wanted to come here and prove he was a Classic winner, so it was very important to come here. 'We came here with Too Darn Hot and he finished second, so it doesn't always happen. I was sorry we got beaten in the English Guineas but he finished so well.' Gosden feels the experience of travelling will stand Field Of Gold in good stead and also praised Keane's ride, with the jockey replacing Shoemark as part of a new 'best available' policy. He said: 'To get on a plane and come here and see something different, they are young horses only three, so he would have learned a lot from this. They grow in stature and in mentality. 'It's probably a very good thing he came here and Colin rode him beautifully. 'He seemed very fresh saddling and then we couldn't find a shammy, so we were late to the parade ring. 'In truth, I was concerned he might overrace with no cover on the outside, but I told Colin if he relaxes going down, he should relax coming back and he rode him just right. 'I told him 'you have no instructions, ride it as you find it'. 'He rode him beautifully, he's the best horse and he quickened up well and a very good horse was second to him and Hotazhell was third. 'When he quickened, he went – he takes two or three strides and he's off.' Field Of Gold is now the 5-4 favourite for the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, with his Newmarket conqueror Ruling Court on course to step up in distance for the Betfred Derby – with a longer trip not ruled out for the Gosdens' charge either The trainer added: 'It's good, solid form, it was a proper race, as good as the English Guineas. No doubt about that at all, probably in the end equal, if not better. 'The winner of the English Guineas goes to the Derby, so that makes it very exciting. 'Let's hope the owners want to go to Ascot and have a look at the St James's Palace there. That's what Thady told me to do, so I'll listen! 'Prince Saud is keen to go a mile and a quarter, so we'll hang on a little.' Shoemark lost his position as the Gosden yard's first-choice jockey in the wake of Field Of Gold's Newmarket eclipse, with Irish champion jockey Keane delighted to 'step in' this time. He said: 'From the minute I got on him, he was a gentleman. Talking to John, Thady and Kieran this morning, they couldn't say how straightforward he was, to be fair to them. 'He jumped, he didn't really need to get in cover. I was on Gavin's (Ryan on Comanche Brave) girths and he was lobbing, so I was happy to stay there. We didn't go mad, we went even, but when I asked him, he didn't half quicken. 'When he went through the line like that, that was as good of a feeling as I've got off a horse for a long time. Just so straightforward and powerful to sit on. 'Kieran said he used to be keen and fresh last year. He has done a marvellous job getting him to relax, to be fair now. I've just stepped in for today.'
