These Humanoid Robots Work Together, Running the Same AI
Robot-maker Figure just unveiled new videos of its Figure 02 humanoid robots working together to put away groceries and sort packages on an assembly line. The two videos showcase skills made possible thanks to the company's new Helix AI. Figure first unveiled its Helix AI, a vision-language-action model, with a video demo showing two of its robots in Figure's Home Lab, being told verbally to put away groceries that a human placed on the counter. The speaker points out these are objects the robots have never seen before, and asks them to put the items away where they belong. The robo-buddies are shown working together to ensure the cheese reaches the fridge, the cookies get to the cupboard, and the apple ends up in the fruit bowl. From the video, it appears as though the robots are initiating their collaborative movements at the same time. One robot moves to grab the bowl at the same time the other moves to grab the apple. Figure says both robots are running on a single set of neural network weights at the same time and for all behaviors. Weights are one of the settings neural network developers can change to affect the resulting output. Having consistent weights across robots and behaviors makes multirobot collaboration and task-switching easier. The company also shared a video of a group of Figure 02 robots sorting packages on an assembly line. Figure highlighted in a statement that its robots now have "a rich 3D understanding" thanks to data from two cameras built into its head. Unlike human eyes, which are side by side, Figure 02's stereovision comes from one camera on top of the other. Similar to previous demos we've seen from Figure, the robots are shown sorting unfamiliar objects, orienting them in a particular way, and correcting their own mistakes. Lab demos like these are fascinating to watch, but they don't provide much information about the robot's limitations. In the home lab demo, the groceries are neatly laid out before the robots on the counter with good lighting, rather than stuffed into a dark grocery bag as they would likely be in real life. The true test of any of these humanoid robots will be how reliably and safely they can perform in an uncontrolled environment like the home, workplace or out in the world. Viewed together, these demos give us a sense of the Figure 02's capabilities in two out of the three settings Figure is aiming at: the labor force, the home and someday in space. Figure has a lot of competition in those categories. Companies including Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics and Tesla have shown their robots performing packaging and sorting tasks autonomously, and 1X has shown a group of its robots performing autonomous tasks like cleaning up. To see these robots in action, check out the video at the top of this article.

These humanoid robots could build themselves on factory lines
Robot maker Apptronik partnered with supply chain giant Jabil to test and produce its humanoid robots. Apptronik says the Apollo robots will perform simple tasks, supporting workers in Jabil's factories. Apptronik previously partnered with Mercedes-Benz. Robot maker Apptronik entered a deal that could have its humanoid bots building themselves on factory lines. The Austin-based company announced a partnership on Tuesday with supply chain giant Jabil. Jabil, which is generally known for building electronic circuit boards, will provide a factory environment for "real-world testing" of Apptronik's Apollo robots, the company said in a release. Appronik says the Apollo robots in Jabil's factories will be tasked with an "array of simple, repetitive tasks" like inspection, sorting, lineside delivery, and fixture placement. Jabil also agreed to produce Apollo robots in its factories, meaning they will eventually help build themselves if they test well. Appronik said the robots in Jabil factories are meant to support existing workers, giving them more time to work on projects that the robots can not do. People who previously worked on the robot's tasks can now dedicate their time to "more creative, thought-intensive projects," the announcement says. Apptronik first launched in 2016 in a lab at the University of Texas at Austin. The company later signed a deal with NASA in 2022 to help develop its humanoid robots. It released its first humanoid, Apollo, in August 2023. "The big idea is a humanoid robot should be able to fit in all the places that a human can fit into and use all the same tools that humans can use," Apptronik CEO Jeff Cardenas told BI at the time. "That allows them to integrate into a world that's built for us versus having to modify the world for the robots." This is the second time Apptronik has agreed to send the Apollo robots into a factory setting. The company announced a deal in March 2024 with Mercedes-Benz to test the Apollo robots with simple tasks in the company's manufacturing lines. Apptronik is also not the first company to have its humanoid robots deployed in a factory setting. BMW announced in June 2024 that it successfully tested humanoid robots from California-based robot maker Figure at its factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW said that the company's Figure 02 robots successfully inserted sheet metal parts, which were then assembled as part of the chassis, or the base frame of a car, during a several-week trial run. Apptronik and Jabil did not immediately return a request from BI for comment. Read the original article on Business Insider

Tesla Rival Figure AI Ends Collaboration With OpenAI After 'Major Breakthrough,' Says It Will Show 'Something No One Has Ever Seen On A Humanoid' In Next 30 Days
Robotics company Figure AI is leaving its collaboration agreement with OpenAI following a 'major breakthrough' on its in-house robot AI, the company's CEO Brett Adcock said in a social media post on Tuesday. What Happened: 'We're excited to show you in the next 30 days something no one has ever seen on a humanoid,' the founder said, without providing more details. Figure AI did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for a comment. Nancy Pelosi Invested $5 Million In An AI Company Last Year — Here's How You Can Invest In Multiple Pre-IPO AI Startups With Just $1,000 OpenAI and Figure announced a partnership in February last year to develop AI models for humanoid robots. The ChatGPT parent company is also an investor in the robotics company. Figure AI was launched in 2022 with the aim of developing humanoids to address labor shortages and reduce the number of workers in unsafe jobs. In August, the company unveiled Figure 02, weighing 70 kg and 5'6 tall. The company then said the robot will have a five-hour runtime and be capable of speech-to-speech conversation with humans, thanks to custom AI models trained in partnership with OpenAI. The EV giant is also developing a humanoid robot nicknamed Optimus which is being trained with the company's in-house AI. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said late last month that the company intends to make several thousand units of its Optimus humanoid robot this year for deployment in its factory which will inform the next version of the robot slated for launch next year and likely to be sold to rival companies.
