'There's a big interest in Filipino food': Sydney's ramen expert turns spotlight on Filipino flavours

According to Sydney-based food, travel, and lifestyle creator Raff, there's a big interest in Filipino food in Australia. He is shining a brighter spotlight on Filipino food and proving that there's more to our culinary identity than just lumpia and sinigang. Raff's love for food began early, growing up in a family that enjoyed cooking and eating out. What started as sharing tips with friends soon turned into a blog, then a vlog. When food doesn't meet expectations, Raff takes a measured approach. If there are too many issues, he simply doesn't post the content. But for minor concerns, he mentions them carefully. For him, transparency is essential, but so is protecting small businesses. If there are too many issues, I won't post the review and instead speak directly with the restaurant. For minor concerns, I mention them carefully. We need transparency but must also be responsible, as creators have a real impact on businesses. Filipino community in Timmins holds second annual Fiesta

The Filipino community in Timmins held its second annual Fiesta on Saturday. It's a time for Filipino people to celebrate their culture food and their love of dancing and singing with each other and anyone else who wished to attend. Wet and stormy weather forced the Filipino Association in Timmins to move the festivities inside on Saturday, Aug. 12. Instead of the planned block party on Balsam Street, the party was moved into the Senator Hotel ballroom – but the poor weather did not seem to dampen spirits at the fiesta. Estela Chow, a local business owner organizes the event which also offers free food because she said helping each other is also what Filipinos do. 'Get together is the main thing you know,' said Chow. 'It's good to share the love that we have to everybody. Family, friends. It doesn't matter if they're blood related, they're family to us. Every time you see a Filipino you're just so excited to see your own kababayan.' Vendors were also on site to sell traditional baked goods.

Three Filipinas rescued from sex trafficking in Malaysia, repatriated to PH

Three Filipinas were brought back to the Philippines after being trafficked to Malaysia through illegal sea routes and forced to work in bars as guest relations officers, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported. The women, aged 30 to 32, arrived at the Port of Zamboanga on April 5 from Sandakan, Sabah via MV Antonia. According to the initial investigation, they were recruited online and promised legitimate jobs as waitresses in Malaysia with monthly salaries ranging from PHP 40,000 to PHP 60,000. Two of the women left the country in November 2024 through what is known as an irregular migration corridor or 'backdoor' route, bypassing immigration checks by traveling from Palawan to Malaysia on small boats. They ended up working in a bar-restaurant in Sabah without proper documents and were later arrested by Malaysian authorities and detained for five months before being deported. One of the victims revealed she had been trafficked since 2021 and repeatedly exploited abroad. Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado warned against the dangers of illegal migration and deceptive recruitment, stating, 'These young women were lured by false promises, smuggled out of the country through unauthorized routes, and forced into degrading conditions abroad.' The BI urged the public to stay alert and report any suspected trafficking or illegal recruitment by contacting the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) through Actionline 1343, which is open 24/7.
