Chris Brady records his 2nd straight shutout in Chicago Fire's 1-0 win over New York Red Bulls
CHICAGO — Hugo Cuypers scored a penalty kick late in the first half, Chris Brady earned his second consecutive clean sheet and the Chicago Fire defeated the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Saturday night at Soldier Field. Brady, who stopped four shots in a 2-0 win over Montreal before the All-Star break, had three saves against the Red Bulls to help the Fire move above .500 at 10-9-5. He last registered back-to-back shutouts in 2024 against New York City and Cincinnati. Cuypers was fouled by Alexander Hack and made good on the PK, scoring with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The score came just a few minutes after the Red Bulls' Ronald Donkor hit the left post from the center position outside the box. Carlos Miguel Coronel had five saves for the Red Bulls (9-10-6). The Fire lead the all-time series 33-22-16. MLS is on a break from Sunday through Aug. 8 for the Leagues Cup.

Red Bulls, Fire clash in pivotal Eastern Conference affair
(Photo credit: Dustin Safranek-Imagn Images) A pair of teams fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference meet on Saturday night as the Chicago Fire face the visiting New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls (9-9-6, 33 points) and Fire (9-9-5, 32 points) are ninth and 10th in the East standings, respectively. The Fire, though, have a match in hand. Chicago is coming off a 2-0 win over CF Montreal on July 19 behind goals from Hugo Cuypers and Jack Elliott. Philip Zinckernagel, an MLS All-Star Game selection, added an assist. The Fire have shown marked improvement under Gregg Berhalter in his first season as head coach and technical director. The next step, though, is Chicago qualifying for its first playoff appearance since 2017, and that includes taking advantage of the transfer window that opened on Thursday. 'It's a work in progress,' Berhalter said. 'We've openly stated that we want to add players to the team and keep the team moving forward and progressing. There's a number of targets that we've been speaking to, and now it's about really honing on a few of them and then pursuing the deal.' Fire center back Carlos Teran, out since mid-April with an upper leg injury, has returned to training and is 'day-to-day,' per Berhalter. New York last played on July 19 against Inter Miami CF, getting an Alexander Hack opener in the 14th minute before allowing the next five goals - two to Lionel Messi - in a 5-1 defeat. The Red Bulls will look to bounce back from a heavy loss in its last outing, a win getting them a step closer to an unprecedented 16th-straight playoff appearance. 'We have to play with a high intensity. We have to play with the right mentality. Those are two big things that we have to improve,' Hack said. 'We have to be ready from the first minute until the 95th minute, play as a team, support each other, (and) fight for each other.' The Red Bulls on Wednesday announced that they had signed Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren from Rakow Czestochowa in Poland's first division.

Avoid water activities around Tuas Second Link, Raffles Marina after chemical tank accident: NEA, Singapore News
SINGAPORE — The public should avoid primary water contact activities like swimming and recreational fishing in the waters around Tuas Second Link, including areas around Raffles Marina, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on July 24. NEA gave this precautionary advice after an accident earlier in the day on the Malaysian side of the Second Link bridge involving two heavy tankers, which resulted in a chemical tank containing propylene glycol falling into the sea. In a post on Facebook, NEA said it understands that the other tanker remained intact, with no chemical spill on the bridge. Primary contact activities are those where a person's whole body or face and trunk are frequently immersed, and it is likely that some water will be swallowed. They include wakeboarding, windsurfing and water immersion training. Propylene glycol is not classified as a hazardous substance and is biodegradable. The chemical is commonly used in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, said NEA. However, propylene glycol may cause low dissolved oxygen levels in the Lim Chu Kang fish farming zone, said NEA. It added that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has alerted fish farms in the area to be vigilant and have mitigation measures on standby. They should also notify SFA if there are abnormal fish and water conditions. Singapore's desalination plants are currently not affected, and national water agency PUB is monitoring the seawater intake at the plants closely, NEA said. NEA and other agencies are in close communication with their Malaysian counterparts, added the agency. It is also actively monitoring water quality in the affected area. Malaysia's Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Faiz Suleiman said an accident involving two lorries carrying propylene glycol had caused a tank from one of the lorries to plunge into the sea from the Second Link bridge. He added that the fire department in Johor was alerted to the incident at about 5.40pm on July 24, and seven firemen and a Fire Rapid Tender vehicle were deployed to the scene, reported Malaysian daily The Star. There was no contamination in the waters where the tank fell into the sea, and there were no signs of leaks from the tanks involved in the lorry accident, said Mohd Faiz. The accident caused delays for departure traffic at Tuas Checkpoint, said Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. A video posted on social media on July 24 shows a moving tanker hitting another tanker that appears to be stationary. After impact, the moving tanker tips towards the edge of the bridge, sending the tank it is carrying into the sea. The incident comes just a day after NEA held a chemical spill exercise at Tuas Second Link with Malaysia's Department of Environment and other agencies. The exercise was part of a bilateral co-operation programme under the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Committee on the Environment. All three lanes of the Singapore to Malaysia-bound carriageway on Tuas Second Link were closed to vehicular traffic from 5am to 2pm on July 23 for the exercise. Former Iowa women's basketball star Lucy Olsen signs with WNBL's Townsville Fire
Yay!!! So excited 🤩🤩 After seldom seeing the floor so far for the Washington Mystics in her first WNBA season, former Iowa women's basketball star Lucy Olsen announced her exciting offseason plans Tuesday evening. Olsen, who was selected with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, has been serving as a depth player off the bench for Washington, where she occasionally contributes scoring outbursts. That included Olsen's 19-point performance against the Minnesota Lynx on July 3. With the Mystics' 2025 campaign still ongoing, Olsen made her offseason plans official Tuesday evening when it was announced that the former Hawkeye would be playing for the Townsville Fire in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). Given the financial incentives and opportunities to continue competing, it is commonplace for many WNBA players to play overseas or in another domestic league, such as Unrivaled, during the offseason. As Olsen joins the WNBL, she will have an excellent opportunity to develop and showcase her skills while contributing to a Fire squad that made it to the league championship last season. "We're really excited to add Lucy to our team. She's a skilled, versatile guard who can score at all three levels and has excellent vision to create for others. 'What really stood out to me was her character. Everyone I spoke to had nothing but great things to say about her work ethic and the kind of teammate she is. Lucy ticks a lot of boxes for us on and off the floor, and I know she will come in ready to work hard and contribute to our team's success," Fire head coach Shannan Seebobm said of Olsen. Given the new offseason opportunity, Olsen fully embraced the challenge by stating that Townsville's love for the game of basketball perfectly matches her own. 'The Fire organisation has a tremendous reputation here in the US and hearing how beautiful the Townsville area is has me more than excited to be joining this upcoming season! I love to play basketball and it sounds like Townsville loves basketball too – a perfect match! Let's go get the Championship," Olsen said in her statement. With fellow Mystics teammate Jade Melbourne also signed as a member of the University of Canberra (UC) Capitals, Olsen playfully joked that the two may have become "Frenemies" heading into the WNBL's 2025-26 season. @jade_melbourne does this mean we're frenemies now😒🤣 So far in her 19 games played for the Mystics, Olsen is averaging 3.7 points and 1.1 rebounds per game on 43.9% shooting from the floor, 40.0% from 3-point territory, and 90.9% from the free-throw line in 10:30 of playing time per contest. Townsville opens its 2025-26 season on Oct. 19 against the Bendigo Spirit. Ironically, the Fire's second game, scheduled on Oct. 25, will be in Canberra's AIS Arena against Melbourne and the UC Capitals.
