Fire TV Stick users urged to check device as popular streaming app gets removed today
Some Fire TV Stick users may be inclined to upgrade their device as Netflix becomes blocked on certain devices. Fire TV Sticks are an affordable way for people to have access to all their favourite streaming apps on their TV without having to splurge on a Smart TV. Including Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, as well as your catch up apps, this nifty device allows users to enjoy their latest binge watch with ease. However, some Fire TV Stick users may want to upgrade their devices as one of the most popular streaming services is set to disappear today (June 3). It was rumoured last month that Netflix would no longer be accessible on certain devices, but the news is now official. Amazon confirmed the block in a statement, saying: "Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago." The vast majority of Fire Stick users won't need to worry about this update as it is only the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014) or Amazon Fire TV (2014) that are affected by the change on June 3. However, for those who do use this device to stream the latest Netflix films and psychological thrillers, you may want to invest in a newer model. It is not entirely clear why the block has been put in place, but it seems to have something to do with a technology called AV1 codec, reports the Express. This technology allows streaming services such as Netflix to offer higher quality resolution which is not supported on the older Fire TV Sticks. However, this better quality does mean shoppers need to spend more on their monthly subscription. This means that users of older devices who pay for the premium service would be paying more for a service they can't access. As such, Netflix may have felt it was an easier option just to remove the app altogether. For those worried that they are affected by the update, you can check what device you own by going to Settings, then go to My Fire TV. From there all the information you need should be in the About your Fire TV section. The devices Netflix will become blocked from this week are: Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014) Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014) Amazon Fire TV (2014). However, Amazon did also confirm: "Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices." Amazon is currently selling the most up to date versions of the Fire TV Sticks, which provide viewing experiences in HD and 4K clarity, as well as access to Netflix. The basic and cheapest device available is the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD for £39.99. This device lets you stream all your favourite streaming services and live TV in full HD and it also comes with an Alexa function to make your searching easier. The next level up is the Fire TV Stick 4K which retails for £59.99. If you are looking for a device with all the bells and whistles, then this is the choice for you. With 4K support along with Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, this Fire Stick also comes with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ support for a superb viewing experience. The most expensive device in the Amazon range is the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Selling for £69.99, this Max device is the only device with the official Xbox app. This high end Fire Stick also comes with Wi-Fi 6E as well as Amazon's new Fire TV Ambient Experience which will make you feel like you are in a museum. It's been a little while since Amazon has offered a decent deal on its popular Fire TV Sticks, but now the online retailer is back with another big discount on these devices. Over the bank holiday weekend, customers have been able to bag some very decent bargains with all of Amazon's telly streaming gadgets currently dropped in price, including the ultimate Fire TV Stick Max. This more premium device features a swathe of upgrades including improved streaming thanks to fast Wi-Fi 6E technology, full compatibility with 4K content, more internal storage for app and games plus it features a faster processor. This Fire Stick also has exclusive access to the Ambient Experience which can turn your TV screen into an ever changing work of art. You can also use this function to add reminders, sticky notes and weather widgets to the display. The 4K Max usually costs £69.99 but that cost of been dropped to just £49.99 – that's £20 saving. The Fire TV Soundbar is a great cheap option to boost your Fire TV's audio. It supports DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio, plus Bluetooth connectivity so it won't hog a valuable HDMI port. There's no Dolby Atmos, but that's understandable at this low price. In our Amazon Fire TV Cube review, we loved this Fire TV device for its speedy performance and easy-to-use interface. It also comes with an Ethernet port, USB-A, and HDMI-in. It's the best Fire TV device yet, combining best-in-class speed with a new remote and an extra HDMI port for device jugglers. It's just tough to justify the extra cost versus the Fire TV Stick 4K Max for less than half the price. This Ring floodlight camera has a 1080p camera, two LED floodlights that deliver 2000 lumens, and a built-in 105-dB siren. Unlike the pricier Ring Floodlight Cam Pro, it lacks 5GHz Wi-Fi, HDR, and +3D Motion Detection, but will otherwise give you a good, clear image. And, it's $60 off its regular price! The Fire Max 11 tablet is the best Fire tablet you can buy. It has a bright 11-inch 2K (2000 x 1200) display, 2.2GHz octa-core Mediatek MT8188J CPU, 4GB RAM, and 8MP cameras on the front and back. USB-C charging and a MicroSD card slot are also included. In our Fire Max 11 review we called it Amazon's new top-tier Fire tablet. The Blink Outdoor 4 is one of the most popular models for keeping tabs on what's happening outside of the home.
