Bomba, forestry teams join forces to combat peat fires

KOTA BARU: The Fire and Rescue Department has implemented a contingency plan with state forestry departments to address peat forest fires, says Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad (pic) . The Fire and Rescue director-general said the measures include identifying and ensuring a sufficient water supply to support continuous firefighting efforts at affected locations. He said the department has identified 572 hotspots nationwide where open burning incidents have occurred, with Selangor, Perak, Johor and Kedah recording the highest numbers. "We have identified 572 locations with recurring open burning incidents at the same sites for three consecutive years, which we classify as hotspots for open burning. "To address this, we have implemented a contingency plan with state forestry departments. We also recognise that some locations, such as in Terengganu and the Kelantan border, lack sufficient water supply due to their sandy texture," he said. Nor Hisham was speaking to reporters after the 2025 Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Forum at the National Culture and Arts Department Complex in Tanjung Chat here Thursday (June 5), which was also attended by Kelantan Fire and Rescue director Farhan Sufyan Borhan. Nor Hisham said that for locations with inadequate water supply, the department would seek assistance from the district office to use excavators to create fire breaks, which would help prevent fires from spreading to other areas in a short time. "In addition to peat forest fires, we are also concerned about fires at waste disposal sites, whether involving municipal councils or illegal burning, as these require prolonged firefighting efforts. "Through this contingency plan, we hope to address water supply issues at locations with insufficient resources during open burning incidents, including the use of excavators as planned, to minimise firefighting duration," he said. - Bernama

Boat runs aground on Lake Belton, boaters rescued

Lake Belton, TX (FOX44) – A Morgan's Point Resort Fire and Rescue team rescued four people whose boat ran aground on a Lake Belton island Friday night. One was being looked at for a possible head injury. The call came in about 10:31 p.m. Friday regarding a possible boating accident on the lake, with multiple calls indicating a boat may have run aground on the island across the lake from the Morgan's Point Resort Marina. Callers reported they could not see the boat but had heard people calling for help, Morgan's Point Fire and Rescue deployed their boat designated Marine 61 with a crew of three. On arrival they found a boat completely out of the water up on the island with the four occupants. One victim had struck their head on impact and was suspected of having a head injury. All four were checked out, loaded on the rescue boat and returned to the shore with the incident then turned over to ambulance personnel and Texas Game Wardens. Morgan's Point Fire and Rescue personnel took the opportunity to point out the dangers of boating, especially in hours of darkness or low visibility. The boat owner told the rescuers they were familiar with the layout of the lake but just didn't see the island. They also indicated the boat's bow light had malfunctioned before the incident and they were navigating with flashlights. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Two-wheeler rider dies after hitting fallen electric pole in Kochi

KOCHI: A 54-year-old man died after his motorcycle hit a fallen electric pole at Kumbalam in Ernakulam in the early hours of Saturday. The incident sparked protests from local residents, who blamed the police and KSEB officials for the delay in removing the pole that posed a threat to the lives of commuters. The deceased has been identified as Abdul Gafoor, a resident of Aroor and an Usthad (religious teacher) at a mosque in Kumbalam. According to police, the accident occurred around 4.30 am while Gafoor was on his way to the mosque for morning prayers. A newly installed electric pole, not yet connected to power lines, had collapsed onto the road near St Mary's School around 3 am during heavy rain. Unaware of the obstruction, Gafoor crashed onto the post and sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to a hospital by police but succumbed to his injuries. Prior to this accident, another two-wheeler rider, a pujari had also crashed onto the same pole and sustained injuries. He was shifted to a nearby hospital. By morning, officials from KSEB and the Fire and Rescue Services removed the pole from the road. The Panangad police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Gafoor's body was handed over to his relatives after a postmortem examination. Local residents have expressed anger over what they describe as a negligent and delayed response from authorities. Simi Joby, member of Pravanam ward in Kumbalam panchayat, criticised the lack of prompt action, and the failure to place warning signs or barricades. 'It took several hours for the authorities to clear the pole from the road, even though the public had alerted them early in the morning. At the very least, some kind of warning should have been placed to alert motorists. In the meantime, two accidents occurred, one of which turned fatal,' she said. Responding to the criticism, Panangad police officials said they attempted to move the concrete pole twice in the early morning hours but were unable to do so as it was too heavy. 'We alerted KSEB and Fire and Rescue officials. Our team tried twice to remove the pole but couldn't, as it was a heavy concrete structure. While our personnel were still at the spot, we received an alert about another urgent incident and had to redirect our personnel,' a police officer stated. Authorities have since moved the pole to one side of the road. KSEB officials attributed the delay to a shortage of staff during the early hours.
