Missing man found drowned in Sungai Long
KUALA LUMPUR: A young man reported missing since last Thursday (July 17) was found drowned in Tasik Bukit Enggang, Sungai Long in Kajang on Monday morning. Kajang police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said his team received a report at 7.30am from a local man fishing at the lake. He said a team of police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel went to the scene to help recover the victim's body, which was found floating in the middle of the lake about 10 feet (3.05 metres) from the banks. "Investigations found that the victim was a 25-year-old local man who was reported missing last Thursday in Puchong. A Honda RS150 motorcycle and a black helmet, believed to be the victim's, were also found on the side of the road near Monkey Canopy, Sungai Long," he said in a statement yesterday. Naazron said the body was sent to Kajang Hospital for a post-mortem, with drowning confirmed as the cause of death. A physical examination also found no signs of injury linked to criminal elements. "A sudden death investigation is underway. Individuals with information about the incident can contact the Sungai Long police station chief Sergeant Abang Faizul Abang Bujang at 012-9208851 or any nearby station," he added. - BERNAMA

Fire and Rescue Dept conducting 24-hour monitoring at Kuantan landfill fire site
KUANTAN: 24-hour monitoring will be conducted to prevent the fire at the Jerangau-Jabor landfill site in Mukim Sungai Karang here from spreading, says the Fire and Rescue Department. Gebeng Fire and Rescue Station chief Zahidah Ali said her team successfully brought the blaze, which covered an area of nearly one hectare, under control by 5.30pm on Monday (July 21). She said further monitoring would be conducted by 40 officers who have been assigned two-shift duties at the site, as the area was located between five and eight metres from high-risk locations such as gas pipelines, electrical substations, and underground fibre optic cables. "When we started operations, we continued to create firebreaks, and the risk of the fire spreading to the relevant areas was low. Additionally, stakeholders also took joint action to carry out monitoring work to prevent the fire from spreading," she said when met by reporters on Tuesday (July 22). She said that among the challenges in the operation was the hot weather. A Bernama survey found that thick smoke also enveloped the area and disrupted visibility for road users in the area. Zahidah said that the cause of the incident was still under investigation. However, the possibility that it was caused by the weather has not been ruled out. On Monday, the Environment Department announced that the fire caused unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Balok Baru, Kuantan, and Kemaman, Terengganu. Balok Baru continued to record an unhealthy API reading of 139 at 8am on Tuesday. This decreased to a moderate reading of 96 as of 3pm. – Bernama

Brunei team leaves for regional disaster exercise in Cambodia
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A six-member team from the Fire and Rescue Department's (FRD) Special Technical Rescue Assistance (Satrea) unit left the country for Phnom Penh, Cambodia to participate in the Asean Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (Ardex) 2025. Ardex 2025, taking place from July 22 until July 24 is a simulation exercise bringing together emergency response teams from Asean member states to enhance regional cooperation in disaster management. This year's scenario involves simulating a major flood caused by a typhoon, leading to collapsed buildings and damaged roads. The Satrea team will conduct search, rescue and victim management operations in a high-pressure environment. Prior to departure, Acting Director of Fire and Rescue Azmi Hafneh presented the national flag to Commander of Satrea, Senior Superintendent of Fire and Rescue Azizul Rahman Yusop at the Brunei International Airport. Satrea is a specialised search and rescue team established to provide rapid response to complex incidents, including large-scale disasters. Their participation in Ardex 2025 serves as an important platform to test their preparedness, communication, and logistical capabilities in a simulated international disaster scenario. The exercise will also provide an opportunity for the team to gain practical experience and strengthen its technical competency in line with the standards of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group. Brunei's participation reinforces its commitment to regional cooperation under the Asean Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Fire dept D-G condemns staged disappearance: 'We don't joke about lives'
PETALING JAYA: "What angered us most is how the image of our rescue personnel was mocked and ridiculed, when in fact, we take matters involving lives very seriously." Those were the words of Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad in response to the actions of a social media influencer who fled to Thailand after staging a fake disappearance at Sungai Tui, Bukit Kepong, Muar, as reported in Kosmo!. Following the incident, Nor Hisham said the department lodged a police report at the Muar District Police Headquarters at 11.30am two days ago over the false report filed by the man, Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin, 38. Nor Hisham said the report was made to ensure appropriate action is taken against the individual for tarnishing the image of the rescue team. "We strongly condemn the individual's highly irresponsible behaviour. His actions are utterly disgraceful. "They also resulted in substantial losses and endangered the lives of our divers," he said when contacted by Kosmo! yesterday. Nor Hisham added that the hoax created a gap in services, as the team was unable to respond to other real emergencies. "For instance, during the incident, we couldn't attend to another case because all personnel were fully mobilised, camping out for days to rescue someone who was never actually missing. "His actions caused major losses to the department through wasted resources and time — such as the added cost of deploying divers throughout the search and rescue (SAR) operation," he said. Nor Hisham added that every individual must act responsibly and consider the consequences of their actions. On July 19, it was reported that the motoring influencer who was reported missing after his car was found submerged in Bukit Kepong on July 14 is alive and has allegedly fled to a neighbouring country, police said. Police believe the disappearance was staged, with the man allegedly conspiring with his 30-year-old brother to fabricate the incident. Fire and Rescue Department had spent four days tirelessly searching for him after reports claimed he had gone missing in Sungai Tui, Bukit Kepong, Muar, last Tuesday. "Our reason for lodging the police report was to prevent this from becoming a trend, where others may follow suit by making false emergency calls. "Therefore, we took the initiative to urge the police to investigate the individual," he said. Johor Zone 4 Fire and Rescue chief Senior Fire Superintendent II Norshuhada Amsari said she lodged the police repor t on the instruction of Nor Hisham. The staged disappearance involved sinking his wife's Perodua Axia into Sungai Tui, Bukit Kepong, to make it appear as though he had drowned. The elaborate act triggered a massive SAR operation involving 77 officers and personnel from various agencies, including divers and sniffer dog units, before being called off last Friday. The hoax was uncovered when his 30-year-old younger sibling finally spoke up during police questioning. Tengku Nizaruddin eventually turned himself in at Muar Police Station last Saturday, where both he and his brother gave their statements to the police.
