Comelec 1st Division lifts proclamation suspension vs Isabela vice mayoral bet
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division has lifted the suspension of the proclamation of lawyer Jeryll Harold Respicio, who won the vice-mayoralty race in the town of Reina Mercedes, Isabela, in Eleksyon 2025. According to a decision dated June 2, the poll body division ordered the reconvening of the municipal board of canvassers within five days for the proclamation of Respicio. 'After due deliberation and in consonance with the thrust of the Government to deliver basic and vital services but without prejudice to the resolution of this matter on the merits, the Order of the Commission (First Division) dated May 12, 2025, insofar as the Respondent Jeryll Harold Paz Respicio is concerned, is hereby lifted, effective immediately,' the ruling reads. 'The Municipal Board of Canvassers of Reina Mercedes, Province of Isabela, are directed to reconvene within five days from the receipt of this order for the purpose of proceeding with the proclamation of Respondent as the winning candidate for the position of Vice Mayor in the Municipality of Reina Mercedes, Province of Isabela,' it added. It can be recalled the Comelec en banc has ordered the suspension of proclamation of 19 candidates for Eleksyon 2025, including Respicio, pending the resolution of the charges they are facing with the poll body. In February, the poll body, through Task Force Katotohanan, Katapatan at Katarungan (KKK) sa Halalan, filed cybercrime charges against Respicio over a series of social media videos allegedly claiming he can manipulate the results of Eleksyon 2025. A disqualification case was also lodged against him. Respicio, for his part, filed a petition before the Supreme Court, questioning the Comelec's move to suspend his proclamation. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

Comelec affirms disqualification of Cagayan governor Mamba in 2022 polls
With just one month remaining before the terms of current local leaders expire, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has affirmed that Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba was disqualified from running in the 2022 elections and allowed Vice Governor Melvin Vargas Jr. to take his place. The poll body, sitting en banc, stood by the decision of its First Division in April 2024 to disqualify Mamba after he, along with Mabel Mamba and Francisco Mamba, who were candidates for governor, vice governor, and 3rd district representative of Cagayan province, respectively, provided financial aid, scholarship grants, and various transport vehicles to the constituents of Cagayan province using public funds during the 45-day spending ban. The First Division dismissed the petition filed by Victorio Casuay against Mabel Mamba and Francisco Mamba for being moot, as they failed to win their election bids. However, it granted the disqualification case against Mamba after he was found in violation of Section 261 (v) of the Omnibus Election Code and Comelec Resolution No. 10747, which prohibits the release, disbursement, or expenditure of public funds for any and all kinds of public works from March 25 to May 8, 2022. Acting on Mamba's appeal, the Comelec en banc said Mamba's duty as governor ''does not grant him unrestrained discretion in the exercise of his powers.'' ''Public officials, regardless of their position, are bound to act within the confines of the law and are subject to the limitations and restrictions imposed by applicable statutes and regulations. The mere desire to fulfill one's duties does not justify actions taken in violation of legal mandates," the resolution said. Mamba will become vice governor on June 30, the day his term as governor ends, following his victory in the May 2025 midterm elections. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News

Colin Healy sees Kerry take care of Longford
SSE Airtricity Mens First Division: Kerry FC 2 Longford Town 0 Kerry FC moved up to seventh place in the First Division table and just five points off the play-off spot after an impressive 2-0 win over lowly Longford Town. The win was Colin Healy's first on the line at Mounthawk Park. It means Kerry have collected 10 points from a possible 15 from their last five games and a nice way to enter the mid-season break. The opening half was a slow burner as the sides battled for midfield supremacy with Ronan Teahan doing well for the home side while Emre Topcu was working hard for the visitors. But it was typical fare between two sides at the wrong end of the table though the home side squandered two decent goal-scoring opportunities. Kerry struck for a deserved lead in the 43rd minute when Oran Crowe crossed from the right side and Kevin Williams rose highest to head the ball goal-wards and in nipped 17-year-old Luke Palmer who smashed his fourth goal of the season. The hosts almost made it 2-0 early in the second half when Palmer struck the post but in the 51st minute he became provider as he put Daniel Okwute through and Eric Yoro was forced to take him down inside the box. Yoro was shown a straight red and Sean McGrath drilled the ball low to Harry Halwax right and Kerry was now 2-0 in front and playing against 10 men. KERRY FC: Tim-Oliver Hiemer; Kevin Williams, Niall Brookwell, Chris McQueen, Samuel Mujaguzi ; Sean McGrath, Carl Mujaguzi, Oran Crowe, Ronan Teahan; Luke Palmer, Daniel Okwute Subs: Sean O'Connell for Carl Mujaguzi (31), Joe Adams for Ronan Teahan (56), Kennedy Amechi for Luke Palmer (65) LONGFORD TOWN Harry Halwax; Pharrell Manuel, Osaze Irhue, Andy Spain, Dean O'Shea, Joshua Harsani Giurgi; Eric Yoro, Emre Topcu, Luke Wade Slater, Aaron Doran, Daragh Murtagh Subs: Francis Campbell for Giurgi (76), Mohammed Bodief for Topcu (76), Emmanuel James for Murtagh (76) Referee: Daryl Carlon (Limerick)

Soccer-Long-Shots Huracan and Platense set for Argentine title decider
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Copa Sudamericana - Group C - Corinthians v Huracan - Neo Quimica Arena, Sao Paulo, Brazil - April 2, 2025 Huracan's Fabio Pereyra and Huracan's Emmanuel Ojeda celebrate after the match REUTERS/Jean Carniel/File Photo (Reuters) - While many football fans drooled over the prospect of an Apertura final between giants Boca Juniors and River Plate, the title will instead be contested by Huracan and Platense, two hungry sides chasing history in a rare decider. After decades spent in the shadow of the country's heavyweights, Huracan are chasing their first league title in over 50 years, with Sunday's final set for the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero. The team, nicknamed "The Balloon" last lifted the trophy in 1973 under coach Cesar Luis Menotti - who went on to lift the World Cup with Argentina five years later - and now find themselves on the brink of glory once more. Standing in their way are surprise package Platense, who spent more than two decades bouncing between the third and second divisions before promotion to the top flight in 2021. They are now one match away from their first major trophy. Led by coaching duo Sergio Gomez and Favio Orsi, Platense have earned a reputation as giant-killers after sneaking into the knockouts with a sixth-place finish in Group B. They ended Racing Club's six-game unbeaten run in the round of 16, shocked River Plate in a penalty shootout at the Monumental Stadium and edged past San Lorenzo 1-0 in the semi-finals. "Everything that happened to us in the past, we use today to try to be resilient," coach Gomez told reporters ahead of the final. "This is who we are, what we convey and what we leave in each other's hearts: a team that gives its all and fights tooth and nail." HURACAN'S RISE Meanwhile, Huracan, who finished fourth in Group A, made the most of their home advantage in the last 16 to beat Deportivo Riestra 3–2. Then they knocked out two title contenders on the road: Group B leaders Rosario Central 1–0 in the quarter-finals and Independiente on penalties in the semis. Manager Frank Dario Kudelka is now hoping his side can build on the solid form shown in recent months, having come close to lifting the trophy last season with a fourth-place finish. "We are a very good team that can beat anyone, and we have been sustaining this for a long time," Kudelka said after Huracan moved into the Copa Sudamericana knockout stages with a 1-0 win over Brazil's Corinthians on Tuesday. "I've managed in every category of Argentine football and the only thing missing is winning the First Division. This Sunday I have an important opportunity." Beyond the league title, a coveted spot in next year's Copa Libertadores is also on the line, a chance for two unlikely finalists to step onto South America's biggest club stage.
