Gov. Josh Green signs multiple education-focused bills

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Gov. Josh Green signed five bills aiming to strengthen educational opportunities and student success across the island on May 30. 'This group of bills represents our state's active commitment to finding real solutions and protecting the fundamental right every keiki has to quality education,' Green said. 'Thanks to the critical work of educators and students alike, as well as countless community advocates, our state is poised to reduce childhood food insecurity and increase access to academic and extracurricular educational opportunities.' Kona man charged with connection to parking scam The new laws are as follows: SB 1300: Expanding Access to Free School Meals This bill increases access to free school meals for qualifying students, with the bill taking effect in the 2025-2026 academic year, with further expansions to free meals the following year. In addition to expanded meal access, the new law also prohibits schools from denying a meal to a student who is unable to pay. 'Senate Bill 1300 removes the financial barrier to accessing school meals, supporting students' health and well-being, as wel as their academic and developmental success,' First Lady Jaime Kanani Green said. 'If students aren't hungry, they can better focus on their studies, extracurricular activities and personal growth.' The bill was brought forward by Senate Vice President Michelle Kidani, who served as the lead 862: Addressing School Bus Shortages Multiple school bus routes were suspended this past academic year due to a nationwide bus driver shortage. This bill reverses the suspensions and allows for alternative vehicles, such as small buses, vans and more, to pick up students and bring them to school. 'Hawaiʻi continues to face a schoo bus crisis, and we've heard from countless parents, families and educators about the urgent need to expand transportation options, while keeping safety front and center,' said House Committee on Education Vice Chair Trish La Chica. 'This new law paves the way for our students to thrive, by expanding the department's options to secure reliable transportation and ensuring that transportation barriers don't stand in the way of our keiki and their opportunities to succeed.' 'Hawaiʻi is the birthplace of surfing, and that's something we should take great pride in. By recognizing surfing as an interscholastic sport, we are expanding access in Hawaiʻi schools — allowing students to build ocean safety skills, connect with our cultural heritage and participate in a sport that has produced champions from our own shores,' Rep. Sean Quinlan, who introduced the bill, said. Two other bills were signed, including HB 110: Relating to Local Agricultural Products, which updates goas and timelines for locally-sourced meals can be provided by the Department of Education to students. The last bill signed was HB 1170: Relating to the University of Hawaiʻi Resident Tuition Fee, which requires UH to provide resident tuition fees to individuals who graduated from high schools in the islands, are enrolling in an undergraduate program and meet other conditions. Trump offers Macron advice after ‘Le Slap'

Donald Trump had some marriage advice to offer Emmanuel Macron after the French president was seemingly slapped by his First Lady. Brigitte appeared to push her husband in his face as the pair were preparing to deboard a plane in Vietnam Sunday (25 May). The incident has gone viral and been coined 'le slap.' Trump was asked to comment on the exchange during an Oval Office news conference Friday (30 May). 'Do you have any world leader to world leader advice for the Macrons?' a reporter asked. Trump smiled and shook his head before responding, 'Make sure the door remains closed.' The president then suggested he spoke to Macron after the incident, adding 'They're fine. They're two really good people.'

Joe Biden makes first public appearance since cancer diagnosis — but Jill keeps low profile

Joe Biden made his first public appearance since being diagnosed with prostate cancer but his wife, Jill kept a low profile. The former president appeared in good spirits, although he coughed several times throughout the speech at a Memorial Day service in Delaware. Mrs Biden, who has been under intense scrutiny following the publication of a book which claimed her husband's declining mental state was covered up during his time in the White House, stayed under the radar. The book, Original Sin, by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, painted a picture of Mrs Biden silencing critics and rising to become 'one of the most powerful first ladies in history,' managing the White House behind the scenes. The couple have in recent months presented a united front, posing for a selfie together with their cat Willow, following the announcement of Mr Biden's cancer, and joining the hosts of The View for a joint interview. The controversial View interview ruffled some feathers, with Mrs Biden accused of speaking over her husband, finishing his sentences, and secretly communicating with him to stop speaking. Although the couple were pictured arriving at Veterans Memorial Park, Newcastle, on Friday, Mrs Biden was nowhere to be seen as her husband stepped behind the podium. She also did not appear to be sitting in the front few rows when he stepped away to sit back down. In other similar public appearances Mrs Biden has stood or sat nearby her husband, often greeting him once off-stage. Giving an impassioned speech, Mr Biden paid tribute to his late son Beau, who died of brain cancer 10 years ago. 'This day is the 10th anniversary of the loss of my son Beau, who spent a year in Iraq. And to be honest, it's a hard day,' he said. 'Being with all of you, quite frankly, makes things a little bit easier, it really does. So, thank you for allowing me to grieve with you,' he said. Mr Biden also applauded the US armed forces, and those who died in action. 'Folks, every year we come together to remember, to remember, to remember the brave women and men who gave their all for this nation, or as Lincoln called it, the last full measure of devotion. 'That's what it was, the last full measure of devotion. They laid down their lives so we could live our lives in peace,' he said. 'Only around one per cent of all Americans defend 99 per cent of us,' he added. 'Just one per cent of Americans risk the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them so much more than we can ever repay them.' Despite his diagnosis of late-stage prostate cancer, the 82-year-old former president appeared more forceful and vigorous than he had been in a while, particularly more-so than when he was the Democratic candidate, before being replaced by Kamala Harris. Claims that it was Mrs Biden who orchestrated the alleged cover-up of her husband's mental and physical decline show no sign of evaporating. The White House stepped into the fray with Karoline Leavitt, Mr Trump's press secretary, launching a personal attack on Mrs Biden. 'Frankly, the former first lady should certainly speak up about what we saw in regard to her husband and when she saw it and what she knew,' Ms Leavitt said. 'Because I think anybody looking, again, at the videos and photo evidence of Joe Biden with your own eyes and a bit of common sense can see this is a clear cover-up and Jill Biden was definitely complacent in that cover-up.' She added: 'They were just on The View last week. She was saying everything is fine. She's still lying to the American people. She still thinks the American public are so stupid ... And frankly, it's insulting and she needs to answer for it.'

EXCLUSIVE The Macrons' 'marital bliss' display continues as they try to downplay shove video: Body language expert analyses their 'overkill denial rituals'... and the slip Brigitte makes to reveal her 'dominance'

The French president and his wife are deliberately over-egging affectionate body language in an effort to downplay rumoured conflict amid the continued furore around the 'face shove' video circulating this week, a body language expert has claimed. Emmanuel Macron brushed off the suggestion of a spat with the French First Lady, Brigitte Macron, after footage appeared to show her shoving her husband, moments before they stepped off their presidential jet in Vietnam on Sunday. The moment quickly made headlines around the world, pressing the French president to deny anything was wrong and claim that they were just playfighting. The couple have been especially close in the days since as they continue their state visit. Judi James, a body language expert, told MailOnline that the Macrons have gone 'overkill' in their 'denial rituals' to silence the rumours, putting on a performance of 'newlywed-style body language presumably aimed at making us forget the gesture'. 'The pair seem set on trying to look closer than usual here,' she said as the couple were pictured together at a reception for members of the French community at the International French School (IFS) in Singapore on Friday. 'Brigitte is dressed in a very modest, pristine, funnel-neck off-white suit that would be entirely appropriate for a wedding, and she keeps her head tilted down so that her face peeps shyly out of her thatch-style hair.' Ms James added that there is now a 'coyly submissive-looking behaviour' from Ms Macron, pictured holding her husband's arm with both hands, 'clinging like a bridge leaving the church, leaning in to suggest closeness'. But one pose 'seems slightly off-message here', she suggests, when Brigitte 'suddenly takes a more dominant stance' and reaches her arm out in front of her husband with a pointing index figure, 'making her look less coy and more assertive'. Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte prepare to sign in a book at the Parliament House. 'When the pair sign a register they both cling to the pen,' Ms James noted In video taken by The Associated Press as the Macrons arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Sunday, a uniformed man can be seen pulling open the plane door and revealing the president standing inside, dressed in a suit and talking to someone who wasn't visible The Elysee had been hoping that the visit to Vietnam would showcase France's reach into the Indo-Pacific, but it has been shadowed by the incident which occurred as the doors of the presidential plane swung open after landing in Hanoi Sunday In Hanoi, Brigitte sticks out both her hands and gives her husband's face a shove, according to footage shot by the Associated Press. He appears startled but quickly recovers and turns to wave through the open door. Since then, Ms James assesses, the couple have made a point of showing closeness in a 'desperate' effort to 'pretend all is well' and deflect focus from the plane footage, which falls well outside of their usual polished look. 'When the pair sign a register they both cling to the pen,' she noted, referring to scenes from inside the Parliament House in Singapore on Friday. This was 'again like a bride and groom', she suggested. 'They seem to have stepped up their mirroring rituals with poses like the one of them clapping together in total synchronisation, providing a like-minded look of peas in a pod.' 'When they glance at each other Brigitte performs another coy facial expression, complete with a slightly flirty eye contact and with her lips pursed into a pout,' she added. 'Macron responds with what looks like an appreciative smile.' Macron said that he was squabbling with his wife but denied anything more sinister The couple speak with France's Culture Minister Rachida Dati (2nd R) and French MP Anne Genetet (R) during a reception for members of the French community The body language assessment continues a trend identified throughout the week as the couple carried on with their tour of South Asia. Ms James said that during a visit to the University of Science and Technology in Hanoi on Wednesday, the couple appeared to be overcorrecting with a 'litter tray' response, burying the bad 'under some shovels-full of "good" behaviour in what looks like a bid to prove nothing is wrong'. She said their non-verbal skills were bordering "overkill", suggesting some levels of panic and a desperation to pretend all is well and to maybe tie in with the ridiculous claims of 'playing' together on the plane.' 'Their response' to the resulting media frenzy, she also identified earlier this week, is body language that looks like 'a bride and groom on their wedding day'. Both were all smiles for the cameras, Ms Macron keeping close to her husband and leaning in slightly. The president has pushed back on the focus on Sunday's incident, telling reporters that 'my wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise'. Now it's 'become a kind of planetary catastrophe, and some are even coming up with theories,' he said. Emmanuel Macron (centre L) and his wife Brigitte Macron (R) look on during a visit to the University of Science and Technology in Hanoi on May 27, 2025. Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron wave as they board their plane for departure following their visit to Vietnam at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on May 27, 2025 This is the third time this month that Macron has been the subject of viral video footage at a time when France says it is being targeted by repeated disinformation campaigns as Russia steps up attacks on Ukraine. Macron testily referred to the other incidents, including the images shot on the train to Kyiv where some accounts falsely claimed he shared cocaine. But the object Macron removed from the table when the media entered was a tissue. Erdogan, meanwhile, was filmed holding the president's finger at a summit.

How long will it be before Melania steps aside for MelanAI?

I imagine students at the US Military Academy at West Point are trained to handle unexpected situations, but I'm not sure anyone could have prepared them for the bonkers speech Donald Trump delivered to graduates on Saturday. I wish I could point you to a government transcript, but the White House recently started removing official transcripts of the president's public remarks, replacing them with curated videos instead. I imagine (just a hypothesis!) that this is to make Trump seem more coherent. One of the 'highlights' of the disjointed ramble Trump delivered at West Point was his thoughts on trophy wives: 'I must tell ya. A lot of trophy wives, doesn't work out [sic],' he mused in the middle of an anecdote about a divorced real estate developer (not him). This has raised a few eyebrows; particularly as Michael Wolff's 2018 book about Trump claimed the president used to boast that Melania was his 'trophy wife.' I don't know if Trump ever really thought that Melania was some sort of compliant accessory to be paraded around. If he did, I'm sure he's now seen the error of his ways. Melania has made it clear to everyone that she is unbothered, unbossed, and entirely uninterested in pretending to care about either her husband or her role as first lady. It's claimed that as of early May, Melania had spent fewer than 14 days at the White House. Trump is her useful idiot husband, she's not his trophy wife. Melania is certainly collecting her own trophies, however. I've got to hand it to the woman: she's mastered the art of making enormous amounts of money with the minimum amount of effort. Last year, she released what columnist Pamela Paul described as a 'book-adjacent object' titled Melania, which one imagines she did not write herself. Last week, she announced that the audiobook was narrated with an AI-generated version of her voice. Now we've officially got an AI Melania voice, can it be long before we get a full-on MelanAI? A realistic AI-powered robot who does all the boring first lady things that Melania clearly hates doing – and doesn't swat Trump's hand away in public.
