Two cities in Africa have been crowned among the world's best cultural destinations

Were you shocked to learn that, after surveying 18,500 people on their cities' cultural offerings, the gleaming French capital was named as the best place in the world for culture? No, neither were we (and you can read more about why here). But our freshly updated roundup of the best cities in the world for culture includes 19 other brilliant hubs that are top-tier places for an art and culture fix right now – and two of them are in Africa. The first of these was Cape Town, where 89 percent of the locals we spoke to positively rated the city's cultural offering, citing events such as ArtsCape, Cape Town Jazz Fest, Kaapse Klopse and First Thursdays. The city sits in tenth place on the culture ranking, but came first as the world's best city overall. 'Cape Town's culture scene has seen an explosion of talent over the last few years,' says Time Out South Africa content director Andrew Hallett. 'Take Dweba Art & Cafe, a new resident of Longmarket Street, where artists fearlessly confront contemporary issues through diverse visual languages over a cup of coffee. We've seen an impressive run of stage shows, including Dear Evan Hansen, which local actor Stuart Brown shone in.' The next city to be included was Marrakech, which sits in seventeenth place and had a positive review of its cultural scene from 68 percent of locals.

Cape Town ranked 10th in the world for culture

You'll remember earlier in the year that Cape Town came out on top in the Best Cities in the World for 2025 list. That result was confirmed after more than 18,500 city-dwellers took part in Time Out's survey of all the elements which make a city great. One of the elements of the survey had to do with culture - which Cape Town scored highly on. So high, in fact, that it is now officially the 10th best city in the world for culture! Now that's lekker! Time Out Travel explains: 'Each city was given a score for both the quality and affordability of its cultural offering (following the survey), and only the highest-scoring cities for each country made the longlist. We then turned to Time Out's culture experts – our global network of city editors and art and culture writers – to vote for their favourite destinations. 'The result? The 20 most exciting, dynamic cultural hubs on the planet right now, where experiencing art in all its forms is affordable and accessible – both to those who live there and to those who visit.' How Cape Town ranked highly A huge 89% of Capetonians rate the city's cultural offering, pointing to events like First Thursdays, Cape Town Jazz Fest and a thriving theatre scene - both big and small productions, as well as what's on offer at the V&A Waterfront, home to our very own Time Out Market Cape Town.

What to do in Cape Town this Workers' Day 'long weekend'

With the public holidays coming thick and fast at the moment, many have a long weekend coming up - if you remembered to take Friday off, that is. Thursday, 1 May, is Workers' Day in South Africa. The public holiday has been observed since 1994 and 'serves both as a celebration of workers' rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against apartheid,' writes the South African Government's website. If you are looking to explore Cape Town this public holiday and try something different to your normal routine, below we have some ideas for you to consider. First Thursdays Tap into your cultural side on Thursday, 1 May, as the ever-popular First Thursdays shows off all things artsy and tasty in Cape Town. Explore Cape Town's best galleries like The Artists Gallery and Eclectica Contemporary as they stay open later than usual, before grabbing a bite to eat and a tasty drink or two at the likes of Tjing Tjing House and Ramenhead. If you fancy trying a different First Thursdays experience, the Stellenbosch edition launches on Thursday and it promises to be a jol of note. A full guide to Cape Town and Stellenbosch's First Thursdays can be found here. We really are spoilt for choice in Cape Town when it comes to food. Fancy something, well, fancy? Hit the caves... for some golf With schools closed, you'll need to think of something to do with the little ones this 'long weekend'. Cave Golf is a super cool activity for the family and can be found at the V&A Waterfront and in Simon's Town. It can be challenging, but is also really fun, with the light-up balls adding to the adventure of playing golf inside a cave! Once you're done nailing those putts, both locations have a Scratch Patch, which the kids love as they can find a hidden treasure or two (play along, parents). Grab a 2 for 1 special on Thursday Why not take advantage of a special on a meal out this Workers' Day? From a delicious prego roll to burgers, sushi and more, there are a few options for you to take advantage of. Our guide to the best 2 for 1 restaurant specials in Cape Town also covers other days of the week, so even if you aren't keen on dining out on Thursday, plan ahead with the other great specials for next week. First Thursdays expands to…

Cape Town's favorite after-hours arts experience is stepping out, and from this week – Thursday, 1 May – First Thursdays will kick off in Stellenbosch. This vibey university town is the perfect locale for the debut Winelands outing of First Thursdays, and the historic heart of South Africa's second-oldest town will come alive from 5pm to 8pm, with galleries, design stores, and wine bars throwing open their doors for an evening of culture, shopping, and sipping. The launch program is centered around the charming, walkable Church Street precinct, with restaurants and bars staying open later for those who want to keep the vibe going. Stellenbosch's historic center makes a natural fit for First Thursdays, thanks to its rich mix of cultural institutions, independent businesses, and beautiful streets made for walking. Organizers hint that the program will expand over time, but for now, the focus is on a few tightly curated blocks. Highlights for art lovers include stops at Oude Leeskamer, SMAC Gallery, GUS, Vincent Da Silva Gallery, and the Art & Wine Lounge. Design lovers can browse SAD, Made In Africa, Me&B, Stellenbosch Books, and Courage. Need a bite to eat? Grab a glass at Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar or settle in at Wijnhuis or De Warenmarkt.
