Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal reviews department's performance; issues directives to strengthen services in flood-affected areas
Dispur (Assam) [India] June 2 (ANI): Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal on Monday reviewed the functioning of the Health and Family Welfare Department during a meeting held at the National Health Mission office in Guwahati, Assam. The meeting reviewed various aspects of the department's work, including implementation of schemes, infrastructure development and the delivery of health services, particularly in flood-affected areas. Minister Singhal emphasised the need for continuous health check-ups and the timely distribution of essential medicines in relief shelters. Singhal instructed doctors, nurses and health workers to remain fully alert to tackle the rise in waterborne and other infectious diseases during and after the floods. He also reviewed the department's efforts to control the spread of malaria in the Indo-Bhutan border areas of Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. During the meeting, the Minister identified several priority areas and issued directions for immediate action. He directed the department to establish a Fast Referral Unit (FRU) in each Assembly constituency to provide maternal, pediatric and emergency health services. He also instructed the Director of Ayush, Assam, to arrange regular yoga training sessions at every Ayushman Arogya Mandir as part of the Fit India Movement and to encourage community participation in health awareness initiatives. Minister Singhal stressed the importance of fully digitizing the administrative and information systems of the department to enhance efficiency and transparency. He asked officials to ensure the availability of essential medicines in every government hospital across the state. Additionally, he directed the department to conduct regular training and personality development programs for doctors, nurses, ASHA workers and all healthcare staff to improve the quality of service delivery. The meeting also included a detailed review of the current status of blood banks in the state, the progress of Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and Ayushman Assam, Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AA-MMJAY) and precautionary measures to be taken in light of the recent rise in COVID-19 infections. Minister Singhal emphasised the need for a proactive and people-centric approach in delivering healthcare services, especially in times of crisis like the ongoing floods. The meeting was attended by senior officials including Commissioner & Secretaries Dr P Ashok Babu and Barnali Sharma, Commissioner & Secretary of Medical Education and Research Dr Siddharth Singh, Director of Health Services Dr Umesh Phangcho, Director of Health Services (Family Welfare) Kamaljit Talukdar and Executive Director of the National Health Mission, Assam, Dr Manoj Choudhury. Cyclists in Chandigarh rally for patriotism, health
Chandigarh: Over 450 students, faculty members, and citizens participated in a cycle rally organised by Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Chandigarh administration's department of sports, to mark World Cycling Day on June 1. The event aimed to promote fitness, sustainable mobility, and raise awareness about the contributions of the Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor. The rally began at Gandhi Bhawan, PU, and concluded at Tiranga Park in Sector 17. It was flagged off by dean University Instruction Prof. Yojna Rawat, with active participation from Registrar Prof Y P Verma and several senior university officials, including DSW Prof Amit Chauhan, DSW Women Prof Simrat Kahlon, ADSW Prof Naresh Kumar, and PU director of sports Dr Rakesh Malik. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya dedicates 25th edition of 'Sundays on Cycle' to soldiers after success of Op Sindoor
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya dedicated 25th edition of ''Fit India Sundays on Cycle' to soldiers after the success of Operation Sindoor which India launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, including one Nepali national. He participated in the 25th edition of 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' on Sunday in the national capital. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, said that the 25th edition of 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' is being organised throughout the country in over 5000 places, and this edition was dedicated to the brave soldiers who were part of Operation Sindoor. Speaking to mediapersons, Sood noted, 'PM Narendra Modi has taken many steps to strengthen the country's sports ecosystem. Under that, the Fit India Movement and Khelo India Movement are popular in the country. Today, hundreds of youth, children, school students, and elderly people of the Janakpuri area have come out for the 'Sunday on Cycle' campaign under the Fit India Movement to take forward that campaign of Modi ji.' Since its inception in December 2024, the Sundays on Cycle initiative has witnessed phenomenal reach--having touched over 5,500 locations and seeing participation from more than 3 lakh citizens. The movement has also garnered over 3.44 billion digital impressions, with support pouring in from icons like Sania Mirza, Milind Soman, Emraan Hashmi, John Abraham, Imtiaz Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, and the legendary Dara Singh, among others. Several Sports Authority of India (SAI) centres as well as Khelo India Centres (KICs) feature community-focused fitness activities such as zumba, rope-skipping, guided yoga sessions, and free health check-ups by experts from the National Centre of Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) during the Sundays on Cycle events. In 2002, at the age of 28, he was elected to serve as the youngest MLA in Gujarat. He first became the Union Minister in 2016. He was inducted as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Minister of State in the Ministry of Shipping, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers. He was inducted into Modi's cabinet as MoS (independent charge) of the Ministry of Shipping, and MoS in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers in 2019. In 2021, Mandaviya was promoted to the cabinet rank and appointed the Minister of Health and Family Welfare during the cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Modi in July 2021. He was again inducted into the Modi 3.0 cabinet in 2024 and was appointed as a Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports.
