Samsung's budget Galaxy Z Flip is here, but it's not what I was hoping for

Samsung's recent generations have taught me one thing: I love its Fan Edition lineup. From traditional smartphones to tablets to wearables, it's won me over time and again, offering just the right mix of specs and price to make sense for those who want a flagship experience without the cost. And, when I heard that it might be expanding to include a foldable phone for the first time, you better believe I was excited. After all, I have a soft spot for anything and everything that flips, and would love to be able to recommend something that doesn't cost $1,000. However, I'm slightly disappointed now that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is here. It might turn out to be an impressive option from Samsung, but I'm not sure that it's a proper Fan Edition launch, and here's why. If I wanted a Galaxy Z Flip 6, I would have bought one When I first saw the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, my mind went to an unexpected place. Honestly, the only thing I could think about was the old clip that went, 'On all levels except physical, I am a wolf.' Now, swap the idea of being a wolf for being a Galaxy Z Flip 6 — that's the same thing, right? Alright, jokes aside, that seems like the method Samsung used to create its latest Fan Edition launch. Everything about the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is just last year's flip-style flagship, just recolored (in boring black or washed-out white) and paired with a downgraded chipset. It has the same 3.4-inch folder-shaped Flex Window, the same 4,000mAh battery, and the same dual camera setup that we've used and trusted for years now. And, in one sense, I suppose it's a perfect example of Samsung deciding not to fix what isn't broken. Samsung knows how to make a great flip phone, but how do I recommend a new one when the previous generation is still so readily available? However, I don't think it's making the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE stand out, either. I've touched on it once, but Motorola's Razr success comes from giving each model a distinct price point. The base Razr (2025) is meaningfully cheaper, with specific cameras, a slightly pared-down cover screen (at least in terms of materials), and a distinct battery and charging setup — it has differences that justify its lower price. Then, if you want to upgrade, there's the Razr Plus and Ultra, both of which add to the experience without making you feel like you're upgrading from a previous-generation launch. In Samsung's case, the problem with making the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE share so much of the Flip 6's DNA is, well, you can still find a Galaxy Z Flip 6 without looking too hard. You can get its extra 4GB of RAM, its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor, and its much better color options, all while probably saving some money. Sure, you might miss out on one more year of software updates (the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE ships with Android 16 rather than Android 15), but you're still covered well into the 2030s. Maybe we've just forgotten what Fan Editions are all about Ryan Haines / Android Authority Like I said at the start, I could be wrong about Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. It could turn out to be a great little flip phone, thanks in part to its similarity to the previous-generation flagship. If that's the case, then awesome — go out and buy one. However, my real problem with that idea is that Samsung's standard approach for Fan Edition launches isn't just copying and pasting what worked before. Instead, it usually finds ways to shuffle in new features to make a nearly flagship-grade phone, yet makes it feel meaningfully different. Take the Galaxy S24 FE, for example — a phone that offered enough of an identity at a sub-flagship price point that I was willing to recommend it over the base Galaxy S24. Where the Galaxy S24 was small at just 6.2 inches, the Galaxy S24 FE was large, offering a 6.7-inch 120Hz display that matched its half-sibling on all levels except for peak brightness. Samsung's more affordable option packed a bigger battery, too, jumping to 4,700mAh over the Galaxy S24's 4,000mAh. Sure, the flagship model had a better processor and more flexible cameras, but that's precisely what you'd expect from a $150 (or more) upgrade. Samsung's Fan Edition lineup is built on value, and I'm just not sure I can find it on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Samsung's Fan Edition tablets follow the same formula, and I think it works just as well. I touted the Galaxy Tab S10 FE as all the tablet Android fans need, and I continue to stand by it every time I slot it into my backpack for a trip. Instead of going large, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE goes small, choosing a 10.9-inch, 90Hz LCD over a 12.4-inch, 120Hz AMOLED and axing the second rear camera sensor — something I never used in the first place. There's also a smaller battery to match the smaller frame and a lower-tier Exynos 1580 chipset under the hood. Pair it up with a $350 price delta, and it's easy to see where this Fan Edition tablet has room to stand on its own. The other thing that all of those other Fan Edition launches have going for them is the benefit of time. They've never had to compete directly with their flagship counterparts, instead launching a few months later as more of a mid-year upgrade. So, when the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE launches on the same day as the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with just a $200 price difference, it's easy to see why the flagship option is getting all the headlines. It has a better chipset, a more exciting Flex Window, extra RAM, and a bigger battery, and the price difference won't feel very big when you can keep it in your pocket for as many as seven years. As much as I'd like to steer true Galaxy fans towards another Fan Edition launch, and as much as I want Samsung to keep hunting for value in the sub-flagship segment, I'm just not sure that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is the phone to get me (or anyone else) there.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7: Compact AI Flagship with Edge-to-Edge FlexWindow & Next-Level Personalization

Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Z Flip7 opens a new era of compact foldable instruments with thousands of new AI features and an edgeless FlexWindow. The newest Galaxy Z model is a combination of mobility, customization, and power, shortened into an ultra-slim pocket-sized piece. Galaxy Z Flip7 also has the largest and brightest 4.1-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow with 2,600 nits of peak brightness and a 120-Hz refresh rate that is edge-to-edge quality. It allows users to view their messages, applications, and artificial intelligence tools even without having to open the gadget. It is also the thinnest Flip (13.7mm folded up and 188g), when it comes to the weight and size. The powerhouse is a new 3nm processor supported with a strong 4,300mAh battery capable of giving a playback of up to 31 hours of video. It is also the first Flip phone to implement Samsung DeX, which turns the phone into a desktop work station. AI applications moved to the fore of Samsung, with its Gemini Live voice assistant, which offers to schedule your itinerary, search restaurant and even offer clothing advice, in real-time. The FlexWindow has new capabilities, such as Now Bar, Now Brief and more customizable features, transforming it to be an always-on companion. The camera specs are no less impressive, too: it has 50MP as a main lens and Nightography and Real-Time Filters to make selfies of any professional level, and it is right through the cover screen. Samsung also released Galaxy Z Flip7 FE which didn't have most Flip7 features but cost much less. Pre-orders will start on July 9, and will be generally available on July 25. It is offered in Blue Shadow, Jet-Black, Coral-Red, and Mint only available online.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 still doesn't fix the worst thing about Samsung's flip phones

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority I have a long history with Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip line. Our revisit of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was my first experience with a modern flip phone, and it instantly hooked me. I started slipping my SIM back into a Galaxy Z Flip anytime I was between review cycles, and the summer Unpacked event became my favorite of the year, Sydney Sweeney cameos and all. And yet, as much as I've loved the overall Galaxy Z Flip experience, I've always had one issue: The cover screen experience. From the minute Samsung swapped from a tiny little display to a much bigger Flex Window, it's felt just a bit behind the curve. So, when I saw leaks suggesting the Galaxy Z Flip 7 would have a brand-new display that looked more like the Motorola Razr Ultra, I got my hopes up. Unfortunately, I think my hope was misplaced, and here's why. New display, new me? C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Before I get to why the Galaxy Z Flip 7 — a phone I haven't held yet — will let me down, let me throw it a bone. I'm so glad Samsung has finally dumped the folder-shaped Flex Window in favor of a panel stretching down around the dual camera cutouts. I'm sure it will drive a Galaxy purist or two crazy from the second they have to adjust the layout to fit around those cameras, but I think it's a much more efficient use of space. At the very least, adopting a new edge-to-edge Flex Window indicates that Samsung is finally looking outside its own Galaxy. The new 4.1-inch, 120Hz panel is bigger and brighter than before, topping out at 2,600 nits with bezels only about 1.25mm on any given side. It reminds me so much of the Razr Ultra that's earned a near-permanent place in my pocket, and I thought it might have a software experience to match. You have a new Flex Window, Samsung, but why won't you make the most of it? See, what brought me to the Razr dark side from the day the original Razr Plus launched back in 2023 was Motorola's openness. It didn't look for the perfect cover screen experience. Instead, it allowed apps to find their way around the dual camera cutouts while offering a quick gesture to bump the interface into a smaller window as needed. This meant I could fire up any app I wanted, from Strava to TwoDots, on an aspect ratio they were never meant to explore, embracing Android's fun, quirky side. On the other hand, Samsung has always kept things as airtight as possible. It limited its original cover screens to little more than notifications and glances at the first half of an email, forcing me to install Coverscreen OS if I wanted any hope of typing on the 1.6-inch panel. I was happy to pick up access to more detailed widgets with the swap to a proper Flex Window, and Samsung's cover screen widgets are still the best around, but it's always felt like something was missing. The less is more approach turned out to be less because all I wanted was access to my favorite apps. For that, I needed to turn to the one customization app I dreaded: Good Lock. Hello, Good Lock, my old frenemy Ryan Haines / Android Authority Unfortunately, the one thing that I hoped for from the Galaxy Z Flip 7 — the one thing that I would have begged and pleaded for — remains just out of reach. All I wanted was one unified app drawer on the Flex Window, and it doesn't look like that will happen. Thanks, Samsung. I shouldn't say I'm surprised, as Samsung doesn't usually fix what it doesn't think is broken, but I can still be a little underwhelmed. For three years now, I've hoped that needing to install Good Lock, download the MultiStar plugin, and flip the I Heart Galaxy Foldable toggle was a temporary solution. I thought it would be a once-and-done, or maybe a twice-and-done, while Samsung figured out how to best optimize apps for its cover display. I was wrong on both counts. Good Lock is still here and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Good Lock is full of strengths, but I don't think being a second app drawer should be one of them. Don't get me wrong, Good Lock is full of neat tricks. I like that it's a semi-in-house way to make your Galaxy feel more like your own, as it means that you know whatever you download will work just fine on your Samsung phone of choice. I love that people are willing to get creative with DIY Home, unleashing funky layouts and geometric shapes on all parts of their home screen to support some of the most unique app grids I've ever seen (even if I don't think DIY Home is for me and my organized mind). And yet, for all of the good that Good Lock can do, I don't think it should be a must-have for the Galaxy Z Flip's Flex Window. I don't think it should be a must-have for something as simple as an app drawer, because that's not what customization should feel like on a thousand-dollar flip phone. It should let me explore new territory, not simply reach for the bar that Motorola continues to raise with its Razrs. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Largest ever Flex Window • 6.9-inch dynamic AMOLED 2X folding screen • 7 years of updates MSRP: $1,099.00 Melds Galaxy AI with the new edge-to-edge FlexWindow With a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch FlexWindow outer display, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 7 focuses on putting AI smarts in your pocket. Measuring just 13.74mm thick when folded, it's the slimmest Z Flip phone yet. Packed with a 50MP camera and a suite of AI tools, Samsung calls the Z Flip 7 a "pocket-sized selfie studio."
