49ers rumors: How World Cup could cost San Francisco $37 million

The post 49ers rumors: How World Cup could cost San Francisco $37 million appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Francisco 49ers are currently gearing up for a 2025-26 season that will see them try to bounce back from last year's disastrous campaign. The 49ers have already shelled out some serious cash this offseason, most notably to quarterback Brock Purdy on a brand new contract extension, but their big spending won't be ending anytime soon. Advertisement In 2026, Levi Stadium will host not only the Super Bowl but also select World Cup games the following summer when the event sets its sights on America. According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk, 'the 49ers previously agreed to cover a $37 million deficit for the Bay Area Host Committee, if the committee fails to raise enough money to conduct six matches at the Santa Clara venue.' Florio also noted that both the 49ers and the host committee have been lobbying for more funding from the California government, but as of yet have received none from Governor Gavin Newsom. Florio reported that 'the event is expected to cost $50 million to stage, with the project losing money.' Advertisement It's a dubious business proposition at best for the 49ers as well as the local economy. The 49ers will be hoping that by the time the World Cup rolls around, they will be celebrating a Super Bowl championship that would have been won a few months earlier. The 49ers very nearly broke through to championship glory in 2023-24 before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime of that year's Super Bowl, and then saw injuries and regression pull them out of the playoff race altogether the following year. However, with Purdy's future secured and a series of trades and signings so far this offseason, San Francisco is hoping to return to their run of dominance in the NFC this season before potentially hosting the Super Bowl at their own stadium in eight months. Advertisement That would make the World Cup bill a bit easier to stomach. Jerry Jones Critic Stubbornly Creates New Micah Parsons Contract Theory

Jerry Jones Critic Stubbornly Creates New Micah Parsons Contract Theory originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - No doubt Jerry Jones is stubborn. But some of his irrational critics are even more so. Advertisement Front and center, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. It was just a month ago when Florio mocked the Dallas Cowboys owner for not living up to his hype of a "substantive" trade being in the works. "Fans and media have begun to wake up to the notion that Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones is more carnival barker than trophy chaser," he wrote. "It's not about winning, it's about being interesting. And he always finds ways to be interesting." That's quite the accusation, essentially claiming that the Hall-of-Fame owner with three Super Bowl rings doesn't care about winning football games. Worse, when Jones pulled off the trade for receiver George Pickens it was somehow still wasn't enough for Florio. Instead of crediting him for making a deal for a No. 2 receiver, Florio twisted it into a new criticism. Advertisement "Regardless of how it plays out," Florio wrote, "owner/G.M. Jerry Jones has added another spinning plate to his endless collection of incomplete contracts." Sounds to us like Florio may be the hard-headed one, refusing to apologize to Jones and now concocting another ridiculous premise when it comes to Micah Parsons. Jones signed quarterback Dak Prescott to his mega contract last season just days before the Week 1 opener. Florio's theory is that the delay wasn't because of negotiations, but rather publicity. "There are many reasons why the Cowboys have gone 30 years without an appearance in the NFC Championship," Florio writes. "One very real reason is the chronic stubbornness of owner Jerry Jones to pay his core players sooner than later. Advertisement "Our guess? He knows it. And he'd rather have the latest unsettled contract become the top story for sports media than to see his team benefit from the relative irrelevance of peace." Again, this a damning contention: Accusing Jones of sabotaging Parsons' happiness and the team's locker room chemistry all for a couple of headlines. Jerry is a master marketer. To us, it's impressive he's kept his team popular and profitable during an almost 30-year Super Bowl drought. To continue to say he doesn't care about winning is preposterous and, yes, stubborn. Bengals Contract Offer To Holdout Trey Hendrickson Revealed

The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping to avoid a messy situation with star defender Trey Hendrickson, who enters the final year of his contract in 2025. Reports are that the two sides are far apart and the team lowballed him with an offer already. Advertisement Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported what he thinks could happen between the two sides as talks continue to progress. "Hendrickson is due to make $16 million this year," Florio wrote. "The Bengals, we've heard, have offered roughly $28 million per year. Whatever the amount (and, as importantly, the structure), he wants more. Hendrickson has real value, but he doesn't have much leverage. His options are simple and few. One, take the team's best offer on a new deal. "Two, play for $16 million and become a free agent in 2026 (unless they tag him). Three, hold out and hope the Bengals will cave." None of those three scenarios that Florio outlined seem to be in Hendrickson's favor. Advertisement He's already spoken out to talk about how disappointed he is in the negotiation process so far. ... suggesting that the Bengals are liars for having reneged on a promise to get this done. 'To say I'm going to sit out or I'm not going to, what I can say is I'm very disappointed with the communication that's been had," Hendrickson said. "Former players have walked in these shoes and what it foreshadows is not something I'm excited about to tell my wife and my family. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. I truthfully will put my hope in that.' Across four seasons in Cincinnati, the well-established standout - who is threatening a prolonged holdout here - has established himself as one of the league's premier pass rushers and most prolific sack machines. He's posted back-to-back seasons of 17.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl the past four seasons. What's the "going rate'' here? Advertisement Well, it's not $28 million. Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby just signed on for $35.5 million per year. Following that, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett got $40 million. Soon, Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons will reach or exceed that number. In 2024, Hendrickson established a new career high with 46 tackles with 33 solo and 10 for loss with 36 QB hits. ... making him, in the eyes of many, just as important to a Bengals push for a Super Bowl as Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who just signed monster deals to help carry the Joe Burrow-led offense. Cowboys George Pickens Trade Fails To Satisfy Jerry Jones Critics

FRISCO - To Jerry Jones' loudest critics - Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, we're looking at you - the carnival barker is bringing in a "substantive" side show to the Dallas Cowboys circus. In the quiet two weeks after he announced that the team was working on "substantive" trades, no one mocked Jones more than Florio. Advertisement "Fans and media have begun to wake up to the notion that Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones is more carnival barker than trophy chaser," he wrote last weekend. "It's not about winning, it's about being interesting. And he always finds ways to be interesting." Interesting turned into action Wednesday morning as the Cowboys traded for talented-but-temperamental receiver George Pickens. Like a lot of WR1s filled with narcissistic DNA, he had emotional blowups on the sideline and and on-field skirmishes that led the Pittsburgh Steelers to choosing DK Metcalf over him. For the Cowboys, however, Pickens is the elite No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb that not only cashes in on Jones' promise but also vaults the team up the ladder in the NFC East and NFL. But if you expected a mea culpa from Florio, you're barking up the wrong hater. Advertisement He obviously had to acknowledge the trade as one of the day's biggest sports stories. But he twisted himself into a pretzel giving Jerry a variety of backhanded compliments. "Jerry said they were working on substantive trades, and I said it was (expletive) and that 'Hey Jerry, we're waiting," Florio said on his Wednesday PFT podcast. "Well now they've got a receiver who has lots of untapped potential but in Pittsburgh who was, let's face it, a malcontent. I knew for sure Pickens was going to be traded once they got DK." Don't waste your time trying to decipher an "I was wrong" out of that quote because you won't find one. It gets worse. Florio finished by not only not giving Jerry credit for trading for a No. 2 receiver, but criticizing him for trading for one in the last year of his contract. Advertisement "Regardless of how it plays out," Florio writes, "owner/G.M. Jerry Jones has added another spinning plate to his endless collection of incomplete contracts." Brock Purdy $280 Million Contract With 49ers Predicted

The San Francisco 49ers are working toward a contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy ... and now one "expert'' thinks he's got the numbers pegged. It's Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently broke down exactly what he believes the contract structure could look like. Advertisement Florio writes all of this with a sort of air of being in the know, when in fact it's simply educated guesswork. Additionally, we would note: If Florio's detailed breakdown prediction - which as he writes would bring the deal's overall value to $280 million - was so easy and obvious ... Both sides would be hurrying to grab a pen. In Florio's view, Purdy is going to end up with a $55.1 million APY on a five-year extension, thus putting him behind only the likes of Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen. And just those numbers and those names right there make this far more complex and controversial than some seem to think. Advertisement Purdy is the centerpiece of this franchise's offense ... and of its offseason decision-making process. The former seventh-round franchise quarterback is 23-13 as a starter and has had plenty of playoff success (a 4-2 record) over his first three years. But to many, there is a debate about whether the 49ers can decide to get comfortable if he's a $50 million APY player … let alone a $55.1 million player. Despite Purdy's overall success, the 49ers struggled to a 6-11 season last year. Should that count against their starting quarterback? Can he carry a team the way many think a $55.1 million QB must? Advertisement The 49ers want to reward and retain the quarterback here. The debate with Purdy about whether you pay over $50 million per year is one issue. And $55.1 million is another part of the debate altogether. Related: Do 49ers Signing Clues Tie Purdy to Kittle? Related: 49ers George Kittle and Wife Celebrate $76.4 Million Contract Move
