Derby schools launch weekly summer meal kits
DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) — Derby Public Schools is once again offering free summer meals to children—but this year, families will have a new, easier way to get them. Starting in June, families can pick up a full week's worth of breakfasts and lunches every Tuesday for each child, thanks to a USDA rule that allows rural districts like Derby to offer take-home meal kits instead of requiring children to eat on-site. No registration or income verification is required—just bring the child to the first pickup. 'It's really important that families understand that there is no income requirement for the food service program,' said Martha Lawson, food service supervisor for the district. 'Any child can participate—they could be visiting grandchildren. As long as we see the child and can verify it, you can get meals for them.' Each kit includes five breakfasts and five lunches, with items like Uncrustables, mini pizzas, chicken strips, fruits, vegetables, and 10 milks. 'The meal kits for lunch will have an entree and a fruit and/or a vegetable,' Lawson said. 'Every meal comes with a fruit or vegetable and a milk.' Free breakfast, lunch in Wichita for kids in Summer Food Program This week's menu is designed to ease production as the program ramps up, but it will expand as the kitchen gets a better sense of demand. 'There will be a couple of peanut butter jelly sandwiches and a couple of cheese pizzas, but that will change once we get into our groove,' Lawson explained. The district hopes the meal kits give families a break from the daily grind of summer food prep. 'It just lightens the load a little bit when it comes to meal planning, shopping, cooking, and cleaning up,' said Lawson. 'The program really benefits all families—not just financially, but in terms of family well-being.' Lawson said the meals are designed to be portable and flexible. 'We will include in the meal kit a pizza that will need to be microwaved or put in the oven, but the meals can also include a sandwich or mini corn dogs that families can take out,' she said. 'You can take the food with you to the park, to the zoo—wherever.' Pickup is available every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at two locations: Swaney Elementary (501 English St.) and the district's Central Kitchen (610 E. Market). Due to road construction, families accessing the Central Kitchen should enter off Madison Avenue, behind the fire station. Egypt, Germany Advance Green Energy Ties with €21 Million Debt Swap Deal
CAIRO – 26 May 2025: Egypt has signed a new €21 million debt swap agreement with Germany, further strengthening their long-standing development cooperation. The agreement brings together the Central Bank of Egypt, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, and Germany's KfW Development Bank. This funding will help bolster Egypt's renewable and sustainable energy infrastructure, supporting efforts to enhance energy security and transition to cleaner sources. With this latest deal, the total value of debt swap tranches executed between the two countries now stands at approximately €297 million—equivalent to around EGP 16.8 billion. Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, stressed the significance of the agreement, noting it extends a development partnership that began in 2011 and has since delivered numerous impactful projects. The agreement aligns with Germany's €250 million pledge at COP27 to support Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) program, including €104 million allocated through debt swaps. One of the program's milestones came in 2023 with a €54 million agreement to expand Egypt's electricity transmission network and connect two major Red Sea wind farms—Noes and Amunet, with a combined capacity of 500 MW—to the national grid. A second tranche under the NWFE platform, valued at €50 million, is currently in the works. The Egypt-Germany debt swap program is governed by a structured framework that ensures effective implementation and optimal use of funds. The Ministry of Planning plays a leading role in coordinating project selection, conducting negotiations with KfW, and managing the technical and financial components in collaboration with national stakeholders.

Britain's happiest places to live have been revealed – and two are near London
Last week the Guardian published a list of the happiest places to live in the UK right now. Taking into account factors like access to green spaces and culture, a sense of community and the availability of public services, the newspaper's ranking intended to reveal Britain's most joyous roads, villages, towns and cities in 2025. In the overall list – which you can find out more about here – a total of five places in London made the cut. The Ridgeway (Enfield), Surbiton North, Clapham Junction, Bounds Green and Bromley were the only areas of the capital to feature. But that wasn't all. Several places near – but not in – London featured in the Guardian 's wider list. These are places within easy reach of the city, where you get to enjoy the best of London life without some of the less-good bits. So what are these two cheery places within easy distance of the capital? Let's dive into it. Lewes Lewes is just an hour by train from London Victoria, and the Guardian praised the East Sussex town for its food options (like its Friday Food Market), cultural attractions (such as Glyndebourne opera house and the legendary annual Bonfire Night traditions) and access to nature. Often named among the nation's prettiest towns, Lewes is inside South Downs National Park and just a short drive from the seaside. Gastronomy, culture and nature aside, the Guardian also picked out Lewes' range of vintage, boutique and outdoors shops as making the place more joyful. Aylesbury The other near-London spot in the Guardian 's list was Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, which is about an hour's train from Marylebone. The newspapers said that from the train 'you can see chalk hills, wooded valleys, big fields with traces of medieval farming and flowering hawthorn hedges'. The Guardian continued to argue that Aylesbury boasts 'a strong sense of community, a mixed population, and great countryside', and says that the town's house prices are 'slightly more affordable' than elsewhere in the southeast. Beyond an hour's commute Further afield than Lewes and Aylesbury, the Guardian 's list features several other locations that are sort of near the capital – they're not as commutable, but they're easy enough to visit. Chichester in West Sussex was included (around an hour and a half from London), as was Evesham in Worcestershire (within a couple of hours of the capital by train), which came second overall. Devizes in Wiltshire, Newport on the Isle of Wight and Cirencester in the Cotswolds made the list, too. You can find the Guardian here.
