Cape Breton man writes book about life without one hand
A Cape Breton man has done it all with one hand…now he's sharing his story. Teddy Morrison of Glace Bay, N.S., has accomplished a lot in his life despite having only one hand. Now, he can add one more thing to the list- writing a book. 'It's called The Adventures Of A Man With One Hand,' Morrison said. Morrison has lived the majority of his life without his right hand after losing it in an accident at the age of five, while trying to help his mother wash clothes using an old wringer washer. 'I reached in, and my hand got caught in my father's shirt cuff and got dragged through the ringers,' Morrison said. 'So, it got crushed.' Morrison's book tells stories about decades of learning how to do things as an amputee, like playing baseball and golf, volunteering for years in the kitchen at the Glace Bay Food Bank, working in his garage and building things from scratch. However, he said it's an everyday task that has proven to be one of the most challenging. 'Tying my laces,' Morrison said. 'You try tying your shoelaces with one hand. It is extremely interesting.' When asked why he wanted to write a book, Morrison's answer was simple. 'I wanted people to understand that if you have a disability and you're willing to try to get things done, you can,' he said. As for how he feels about becoming a first-time author at the age of 78? 'I'm really, really.. I guess the word is, proud of myself to take the time to do that,' Morrison said. Morrison said his book should be available, in bookstores and online, within a few weeks. Teddy Morrison Teddy Morrison, author of The Adventures Of A Man With One Hand. Mercer Co. Food Bank celebrates 4th annual Community Garden Kickoff
SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) — The Mercer County Food Bank celebrated its fourth annual Community Garden Kickoff on Saturday. The family-friendly event included rock painting, flower planting, games, storytime and hot dogs for lunch. The food bank started the community garden in 2021 through the Lots to Love Program, a partnership between the City of Sharon and Community Action Partnership of Mercer County. The garden has eight beds with different fruits and vegetables such as peppers, red raspberries, tomatoes, onions and garlic. People in the community can easily get the fresh produce. 'You can kind of see the neighbors behind us. They love having this here. they love the ability to take whatever they need, and honestly, on the volunteer and food bank side, it's just another way that we can give back. If we're not supporting our community and lifting up our community, then there is no community,' said Alexis Spence-Locke, development director for the food bank. The garden is on 4th Avenue in Sharon, across from the Buhl Club. Next Saturday, May 31, the food bank will have its Stuff the Truck event from 1 to 3 p.m. at D'Onofrio's Food Center in Hermitage. All 99 Iowa counties face increased food insecurity, survey reports
DES MOINES, Iowa — Results released from an annual study show that all 99 Iowa counties reported increased food insecurity. Feeding America holds an annual Map the Meal Gap survey, which estimates food insecurity and costs for better resource allotment and cost estimation. A survey released Wednesday showed that every Iowa county reported increased food insecurity in 2023. The results show that 1 in 8 Iowans and 1 in 6 Iowa children endure food insecurity. The report states that an estimated 385,000 don't know where and when their next meal will come from. Unemployment insurance tax, other bills sent to Gov. Reynolds' desk Annette Hacker, Food Bank of Iowa Strategy and Communications Vice President, says these results are just confirming what they have already seen. 'We know there's no ceiling in sight for at least another couple of years because we have continued to see record numbers of Iowans facing hunger and coming to our partner pantries for food access in record numbers every single month since April of 2022,' said Hacker. Of the 99 counties, 11 have more than 20% of children reporting food insecurity. While more students qualify for free school meals each year, children face a several-month gap over the summer. 'That is shocking, and it should deeply concern all of us. We don't want to be a state where there's not enough food for our children. They are our future,' said Hacker. 'Also, the ten hardest hit counties in Iowa are largely rural, many in southeastern Iowa.' With the school year wrapping up, the Food Bank of Iowa is preparing for summer meal programs. The Governor's office and Food Bank are working together on her 'Healthy Kids Iowa' program, which provides $40 a month for children 4-18 years old who are below the federal poverty level.
