Katie McCabe's relationship with teammate 'still not over this' after win

Just days on from Arsenal's incredible Champions League final win, Katie McCabe has linked up with her Republic of Ireland teammates for the Girls in Green's upcoming UEFA Nations League clashes. Carla Ward's side face Turkey away from home on Friday before hosting Slovenia in Páirc Uí Chaoimh next Tuesday. The Gunners defeated red-hot favourites Barcelona in Saturday's decider in Lisbon and returned to a victory parade in north London after winning the tournament for the first time in 18 years. McCabe played the full 90 minutes of the decider, while her partner Caitlin Foord was also on the pitch up until the 86th minute. While McCabe has made her way to the Ireland camp, her Australian partner was still basking in Arsenal's success on Wednesday morning as she shared a number of photos from the victory parade on Instagram. Foord wrote: "Still not over this! Gooners this was special!!!" The photos included a snap of McCabe and Foord celebrating together, while they were also pictured with the Champions League trophy both at the parade and on the flight home. Tallaght native McCabe and Foord went public with their relationship last year after months of speculation that they were dating. The Ireland captain commented on a series of photos shared by Foord from a romantic break to Rome last May. She wrote 'Amore', which translates to love. And McCabe took to Instagram last November to wish her partner a happy 30th birthday. She wrote: "Dirty 30s." McCabe later added: "Happy birthday my Aussie girl." Meanwhile, earlier this month, shortly before Arsenal's Champions League final win, the couple shared time in Dublin with McCabe's family. Sharing photos online at the time, the Irish star said: "Lots of family love."

A new Miami Beach underwater art installation aims to help coral thrive

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — South Beach has long been known for its Art Deco pastels and neon nightlife. But it's also home to something else: a bustling coral reef just hundreds of feet offshore. Soon, that natural reef is expected to be along the path of a roughly seven-mile public art installation, called The Reefline, which will be part sculpture park and part snorkeling trail celebrating and supporting marine life. 'Mother Nature is the ultimate artist,' said Reefline founder and artistic director Ximena Caminos. 'What we're doing is giving nature and amplifying that marine habitat, because it's needed.' Corals are struggling worldwide; The Reefline hopes to help them flourish in South Florida, starting with its Phase 1 rollout this year when a series of concrete cars will be submerged, creating a traffic jam. 'How do we turn doomsday into optimism?' said Caminos. Those sculptures won't just drive conversation. The Reefline says they'll give fish shelter; fish will help corals thrive. According to organizers, the new marine communities will provide an added benefit: beachfront erosion prevention. Artificial reefs are not a new concept. But The Reefline's coral expert, Colin Foord, said the new project goes further by rescuing dislodged, climate-resilient corals whose clones will be locked onto the project's planned hybrid reef. 'We are accelerating the development of a fully healthy coral reef by decades by putting out small pieces of coral that we are growing here in the lab,' Foord said in a Miami lab housing submerged corals. 'When you put the mask on and you get into the water, it's like time slows down,' said Foord. 'I think that if more people have that type of opportunity, then that helps change public perception about the need to protect the environment.'

Matildas trio Kyra Cooney-Cross, Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley reached Champs League final

Matildas trio Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross will play for the biggest prize in club football after helping Arsenal to a shock 4-1 win over Lyon in the second leg of their Women's Champion League semi-final to advance to next month's final against Barcelona. Foord scored the fourth goal to seal the victory for Arsenal as the Gunners shocked Lyon and denied their Matildas teammate Ellie Carpenter another trip to the Champions League final. Arsenal needed to overturn a 2-1 deficit following the first leg of the last-four clash against the record eight-time Champions League winners, and they levelled the tie on aggregate via goalkeeper Christiane Endler's early own goal. Spain star Caldentey then made it 2-0 for Arsenal on the day to put them ahead overall in first-half stoppage time, and the visitors ran away with the tie after the break. Alessio Russo scored just 27 seconds after the restart and Foord pounced on a calamitous defensive slip to get Arsenal's fourth goal. Melchie Dumornay, who scored Lyon's winner in the first leg last week, pulled one back for Lyon but it was too little too late for them as Arsenal held out to take the tie 5-3 on aggregate. Arsenal, who are second in the English Women's Super League behind Chelsea, will now face Barcelona in the final in Lisbon on May 24. The Catalans qualified earlier on Sunday with a 4-1 win away to Chelsea sealing an 8-2 aggregate triumph. Barcelona will be the overwhelming favourites as they head into the final looking to win the trophy for the third year running and fourth time overall. Arsenal won the competition in 2007 when it was still known as the UEFA Women's Cup, but they are now through to their first final since then. It is a remarkable achievement against a side that had won every game in the competition this season coming into the second leg, and who were aiming for their eighth final appearance in the last 10 years. Lyon held the advantage coming into the return in front of their own fans at the Groupama Stadium, which was nevertheless far from full for the occasion. They also had captain Wendie Renard back after injury and starting in central defence as the French international made her 500th appearance for the club. However, Lyon never really recovered from a dreadful start as they fell behind inside five minutes in bizarre circumstances. Damaris Egurrola tried to head away an Arsenal corner under pressure inside her own six-yard box, but only succeeded in playing the ball off goalkeeper Endler and in to put the visitors in front on the day. Caldentey then got the crucial second right at the end of the opening half, the former Barcelona player collecting a Russo lay-off and firing high into the net from the edge of the area. That meant Arsenal now held the lead in the tie, and they went further ahead right from the kick-off in the second half as England international Russo found herself through on goal and fired in. There was then no way back for Lyon when Arsenal got their fourth on 63 minutes, as Vanessa Gilles slipped when controlling a short pass out by Endler, allowing Australian star Foord to advance and beat the goalkeeper. Dumornay reduced the deficit inside the final 10 minutes but Lyon needed two more goals to level the tie again and Arsenal held on.

Sam Kerr's dream comeback ruined as Caitlin Foord delivers setback for Matildas teammate

Sam Kerr's chances of a dream comeback in the Champions League have been dashed, while Aussie star Caitlin Foord delivered Ellie Carpenter a brutal blow in their knockout tie. Arsenal visited Lyon with the tough task of overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit after going down to the French outfit at home. But Foord helped Arsenal pull off a remarkable comeback as she tormented Matildas teammate Carpenter down her wing throughout the second-leg. Carpenter was aiming for her third Champions League trophy with the all-conquering Lyon side, but endured a horror night as her side of the field was exposed time and time again. Lyon's Australian coach Joe Montemurro was left without answers as the team capitulated in stunning fashion in front of their from fans. The errors started when Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler misjudged a corner only five minutes into the game, which saw it hit her back and bounce into the goal. And it didn't stop there after Mariona Caldentey scored a stellar strike to make it 2-0, before Arsenal's Alessio Russo took advantage of Lyon's defensive errors to score 30 seconds after second-half started. Foord was able to get in on the action after Lyon centre back Vanessa Gilles slipped. This allowed Foord to pounce on the loose ball and fire home in the 63rd minute. This all but sealed the victory for Arsenal to take them to the Champions League final with a 4-1 win. "I mean it is incredible. To come into the game a goal down, it didn't phase us. We thought we played really well at home," Foord said to TNT Sport. "To come here, we just knew if we played our game we could do it. I didn't expect it to be like that, but I will take that. I think we came out well and started fast and you get rewarded when you get the built the confidence more and more." Foord might have been hoping to meet fellow-English side Chelsea in the showpiece event, but instead it will be Barcelona after the Spanish side obliterated the soon-to-be English champs in the semi-final. Chelsea have not lost a game in the Women's Super League this year, despite Kerr not featuring due to an ACL injury that has kept her out all season. "Anything can happen in the final..."Arsenal's Caitlin Foord is already looking forward to the challenge Barcelona will present in the Champions League final 🤝 — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) April 27, 2025 Kerr was potentially eyeing a return in the Champions League final if they usurped Barcelona in the semi. But Chelsea met their match with Barcelona hammering the London-based side 8-2 across the two legs. Barcelona will be going for their third-straight Champions League title and will be heavy favourites after their demolition of Chelsea. Kerr now won't feature in the Champions League this campaign and will turn her attention to the final few WSL games as she looks to make a return. Chelsea have once again fallen short of winning the Champions League having made the final back in 2021, only to be hammered 4-0 that day by Barcelona. And it appears they still can't get past the Barcelona hurdle. And Kerr's fans are still waiting to find out when the forward will make a return after her recovery continues. Earlier this month, Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor delivered a blow to fans hoping to see Kerr back in action, revealing the Matildas star is still "a few weeks" away from being ready. And the coach placed further doubt on Kerr's return suggesting she might not feature this season at all. "Sam is progressing in her rehab but I don't have enough elements to say we will see her this season. Hopefully yes but it's difficult for me to say," she said before the Champions League clash. Kerr was back in Matildas camp for their two friendlies against South Korea last weekend, but is still sidelined as she recovers from an ACL injury. Chelsea are playing it extremely cautiously due to the fact it's Kerr's second in her career and she hasn't been rushed back to competition. Unfortunately, while Chelsea have already won the League Cup, and can add the Women's Super League and FA Cup to their campaign, the Champions League is now out of reach. And Kerr will be hoping to make a comeback before the end of the year and play in a historic season for Chelsea.

Caitlin Foord on target as Arsenal produce stunning Women's Champions League semifinal victory over Lyon

Three Matildas helped Arsenal to a famous Women's Champions League semifinal triumph at all-conquering Lyon, with Caitlin Foord finding the target in a remarkable 4-1 win to set up a final against champions Barcelona. Foord celebrated with fellow Australia internationals Steph Catley and substitute Kyra Cooney-Cross as the Gunners overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit in France. The home club, eight-time European champions, were left stunned and crestfallen, with Lyon's Australian manager Joe Montemurro having seen his side capitulate to the club he once managed so successfully in England. It was also a massive disappointment for Lyon full-back Ellie Carpenter, whose dream of a third Champions League winner's medal was shattered after she'd been tormented all afternoon down her right flank by the excellent Foord. Arsenal now faces its ultimate test in the final in Lisbon on May 24 against a rampant Barcelona side who had earlier outclassed Chelsea 4-1 for a second time in a week, sealing an 8-2 aggregate victory and a shot at a third-straight crown. Loading Twitter content It was also the end of any faint hopes the injured Sam Kerr may have harboured of making a return to Chelsea's ranks for the biggest match in women's football. Instead Chelsea's London rivals Arsenal will go to the Alvalade Stadium, after a 5-3 aggregate win which felt wholly unexpected amid an accident-prone showing from Europe's most celebrated women's club. Lyon keeper Christiane Endler began the shambles after misjudging a fifth-minute corner, with an attempted clearance then hitting her on the back and bouncing in for an own goal. Mariona Caldentey's superb strike made it two before Alessio Russo cashed in on a succession of defensive errors to score 30 seconds after the resumption. In the 63rd minute, Lyon centre back Vanessa Gilles slipped and fell in her own area, allowing Foord to pounce on the gift to hammer home gleefully. That really sealed the deal even before Melchie Dumornay grabbed an 81st-minute consolation. At Chelsea's Stamford Bridge, Barcelona was again in a different league to the English champions, just as in Catalonia seven days earlier. Kerr was still not ready to return to action after more than a year out with her ACL injury but even the Australian captain's presence could hardly have helped the Blues against the slick visitors. It was the end of another European dream for Kerr and Chelsea, who reached the final back in 2021, only to be routed 4-0 that day by Barcelona. AAP
