Holgado looks set to represent Harimau Malaya
PETALING JAYA: Could Rodrigo Holgado (pic) be Harimau Malaya's surprise trump card? The idea may become a reality, with the Argentine striker reportedly eligible to represent Malaysia through his grandmother – and the formalities now in motion. Holgado, currently playing for Colombian top-tier club America de Cali, is being monitored closely by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), and the ball is already rolling behind the scenes. In fact, his club coach Jorge Da Silva confirmed that the wheels are turning faster than expected. 'We were actually surprised by the news regarding Holgado. At first, I thought it was just a rumour,' said Da Silva. 'Then, an official document arrived at the club. However, I'm not certain if Holgado will be able to join the Malaysian squad in time.' The third phase of centralised training will begin on June 1, as the team ramp up preparations for the upcoming international window. The 28-year-old forward could potentially offer a new attacking option to coach Peter Cklamovski, who is building depth with a mix of local and heritage talents. Holgado, who has enjoyed successful stints in Argentina, Chile, and now Colombia, is known for his physical presence, intelligent movement, and sharp eye for goal – qualities that could add bite to Malaysia's forward line as they prepare for crucial assignments ahead. Sources indicate Holgado may not be the only new face with mixed roots joining the national fold. At least two or three other players with Malaysian heritage are expected to report for training. Among those already confirmed for phase three are Portimonense's Dutch midfielder Hector Hevel and Buriram United's seasoned wingback Dion Cools, who returns after a brief absence. Should his paperwork be finalised in time, Holgado might not just be another name in the squad, but possibly a game-changer.

Former national footballer Gopinath dies
FORMER national footballer T. Gopinath Naidu, who was part of Malaysia's football scene in the 1990s, died yesterday at the age of 50. The sad news was shared by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) through a post on its official Facebook page. 'Condolences. FAM extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the late T. Gopinath Naidu. He was a member of the national squad in the 1990s and had also played for Kuala Lumpur (1992–1994) and Perak (1996),' the post read. Fondly known as the 'Kuala Lumpur Wonder Boy', Gopinath played a key role in helping 'The City Boys' secure back-to-back FA Cup titles in 1993 and 1994. His outstanding performance earned him opportunities to train and play internationally, including with English club Aston Villa and German side Bayern Leverkusen. However, recurring knee injuries forced him into early retirement at the age of 25 in 1999. During his time with the national team, Gopinath represented Malaysia at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan, and the qualifying rounds for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Debate over heritage players in national squad unnecessary
KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh believes that the issue concerning heritage-status players in the national football squad, raised by certain parties, should not be blown out of proportion. She said that heritage players were also individuals with blood ties to Malaysians, thus making them eligible to don the national jersey. 'So if heritage players can strengthen the national team's performance, I see no issue with it because they are also Malaysians. 'We must support them, and this also reflects our recent struggle in Parliament to amend the Federal Constitution so that Malaysian women who give birth abroad can pass on citizenship to their children,' she said at a press conference after launching the new season of the Sepak Takraw League (STL) here today. Previously, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) faced criticism for allegedly relying too heavily on heritage players and foreign expertise in shaping the Harimau Malaya squad. Hannah said what mattered most now was to ensure the players felt at home with the local football fans backing them. The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, also expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing criticism aimed at efforts to advance the country's football scene, including the involvement of heritage players.
