Son of 49ers Legend Gaining Steam at Camp

Life as a post-contention team comes with a handful of grueling demands. The San Francisco 49ers parted ways with receiver Deebo Samuel and lost two offensive linemen. Safety Talanoa Hufanga and linebacker Dre Greenlaw both found new homes with the Denver Broncos. Yet, as the Brock Purdy contract extension looms, San Francisco isn't out of cap trouble just yet, despite having ample cap space in 2025. That's by design, and it's in preparation for the next era of 49ers football. Advertisement If it's going to be a competitive one, San Francisco must find young, cheap talent to contribute at every level of the roster. It's a task that requires winning the draft and the free agency that follows, as well as finding value on the margins. Terique Owens, the son of 49ers legend Terrell Owens, is receiving praise at rookie camp as he enters his second NFL season. 'Owens spent most of the 2024 season on the practice squad and therefore was familiar with, and prepared for, [receivers coach Leonard] Hankerson's routine,' Matt Barrows wrote for The Athletic. 'Because of that, he was the tone-setter in Friday's practice, leading the receivers through the drills. Owens' delayed introduction to football is ironic, given his roots, but it lends itself to a longer developmental runway to tap into. Advertisement It's not like he's without tools. The Missouri State product ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at 6-1, 199, and his jumps were elite, suggesting he has elite athleticism. In his final collegiate season, 528 yards and four scores on just 28 catches for an incredible 18.9 yards per catch. 'Owens is firmly in the 'players to watch' category this offseason,' Barrows wrote. 'Though he's the son of pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens, he got a late start with football and the 49ers were betting on his upside when they signed him a year ago. He'll have the opportunity to prove himself this year.' With a seemingly safe spot on the practice squad and the opportunity to earn his way onto San Francisco's roster, Owens will look to combine his athleticism with his one year of NFL experience to follow in his father's footsteps and play on Sundays. Former 49ers UDFA and son of franchise legend a 'tone-setter' in rookie minicamp

Former 49ers UDFA and son of franchise legend a 'tone-setter' in rookie minicamp It's hard to fly under the radar on the San Francisco 49ers roster as the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens. However, Terique Owens may not be an 'under the radar' type of player for much longer. San Francisco added Owens as an undrafted rookie last season out of Missouri State. He spent most of the year on the 49ers' practice squad trying to gain his sea legs in the NFL. His experience with the 49ers' coaching staff shined through at the team's rookie minicamp where Owens participated as a second-year player. The Athletic's Matt Barrows was in attendance for the rookie minicamp sessions and noted how well-prepared Owens looked in the early practices. Owens spent most of the 2024 season on the practice squad and therefore was familiar with, and prepared for, Hankerson's routine. Because of that, he was the tone-setter in Friday's practice, leading the receivers through the drills. Owens is firmly in the 'players to watch' category this offseason. Though he's the son of pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens, he got a late start with football and the 49ers were betting on his upside when they signed him a year ago. He'll have the opportunity to prove himself this year. It'll be interesting to see just how far into the roster battle Owens can climb. He has good size at 6-3, 200 pounds and his pedigree will always make him an intriguing prospect. Brandon Aiyuk's injury status and a possible suspension for Demarcus Robinson could open the door for Owens to find his way into the final 53 players. If Aiyuk is still working back from his injury to start the year and if Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, it opens two spots on an initial roster that doesn't feature a ton of high-quality receiver depth. Owens should be in the mix with players like Jacob Cowing, rookie fourth-round pick Jordan Watkins and a handful of other veterans who aren't locks to make the team. Owens is off to a good start with a strong rookie minicamp. Now he'll need to translate that to the rest of the offseason program and into training camp where the rubber will meet the road on the roster construction. If Owens shows growth as a pass catcher and contributes on special teams, he may follow in his father's footsteps and suit up for the 49ers on Sundays.

Tom Brady encouraged Shedeur Sanders after his 2025 NFL Draft slide with a powerful message

Tom Brady encouraged Shedeur Sanders after his 2025 NFL Draft slide with a powerful message Future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady knows what it's like to wait your turn in the NFL Draft, and he sent some encouragement Shedeur Sanders' way after his 2025 NFL Draft slide. Sanders eventually landed in the fifth round with the Cleveland Browns last month, and he dedicated his rookie number to Brady with the No 12. On the recent IMPAULSIVE podcast, Brady explained how he reached out to Sanders to offer him some words of wisdom and support after his surprise draft drop. 'Day 2 matters more than the draft," Brady said on the show. "I was 199. So, who can speak on it better than me, like what that really means. Use it as motivation. You're gonna get your chances. Go take advantage of it.' Some NSFW language to follow. Say what you will about Brady, but this was a classy move from the goat about a situation he knows all too well.

Report: John Elway driving golf cart when friend injured

Pro Football Hall of Fame member John Elway was driving the golf cart when his former agent fell out and sustained a life-threatening head injury last weekend, TMZ reported Wednesday. Jeff Sperbeck, 61, a longtime friend and business partner of the legendary Denver Broncos quarterback, is on life support after the incident Saturday in La Quinta, Calif., per the report. TMZ confirmed that Elway was behind the wheel when Sperbeck fell off the back of the moving cart and struck his head on asphalt. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection told KESQ it responded to an accident involving a golf cart and transported an unnamed patient to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating the incident. Elway and Sperbeck and their wives attended the Stagecoach music festival earlier Saturday in nearby Indio, Calif., according to TMZ. Elway, 64, and Sperbeck founded 7Cellars winery together in 2013. Sperbeck, certified by the NFL, represented more than 100 NFL players as an agent and business adviser over a 30-year career, according to his bio on the winery's website. Elway played for the Broncos from 1983-98, winning Super Bowl championships in each of his final two seasons. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. He returned to the team as an executive in 2011, working as the general manager through 2020 and as president of football operations in 2021. --Field Level Media
