Sega Cancels New Game in Major Franchise After Hitting Roadblocks

Today, Sports Interactive and announced its anticipated soccer simulation video game is canceled. The developer is now shifting its focus to its next release, presumably Football Manager 26. In a recent statement made by Sports Interactive, the reasoning behind the cancelation of Football Manager 25 can be boiled down to quality not meeting the developer's standards. To be more specific, the company stated that while much of the different areas of the game hit their quality targets, they claim the 'overarching player experience and interface' were not up to snuff. They do still believe that the new changes will be welcome improvements for fans, but they still need time to get it right. As such, they have started to focus on the 'next release.' 'Due to a variety of challenges that we've been open about to date, and many more unforeseen, we currently haven't achieved what we set out to do in enough areas of the game, despite the phenomenal efforts of our team,' says the statement. 'Each decision to delay the release was made with the aim of getting the game closer to the desired level but, as we approached critical milestones at the turn of the year, it became unmistakably clear that we would not achieve the standard required, even with the adjusted timeline.' 'Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be,' the statement continues. 'As extensive evaluation has demonstrated, including consumer playtesting, we have clear validation for the new direction of the game and are getting close – however, we're too far away from the standards you deserve.' Players that preordered Football Manager 25 will receive a full refund. Those that purchased through an official Sega-approved retailer will automatically receive the refund. FM25 cancelled after release delays

The makers of video game Football Manager 25 have cancelled its release after a number of delays. The game's release date had already been pushed back twice and its makers said they knew the latest news would "come as a huge disappointment". In an update on Thursday, Sports Interactive said it had made the "difficult decision" to cancel the release entirely after "internal discussion and careful consideration with Sega". Instead, their focus will now turn to the next release, Football Manager 26, expected to be released later this year. The makers said they were "very sorry" to have "let down" those who had pre-ordered the game. Football Manager was first released in November 2004 and its most recent release hit stores in November 2023. The latest in the series can be played on a variety of platforms, including Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It became the "most played" in the history of the franchise, having had seven million players within 100 days of its release. Sports Interactive said it had hoped to create "the biggest technical and visual advancement in the series for a generation" with the launch of Football Manager 25. The company said the game was delayed "due to a variety of challenges", until it became "unmistakably clear" that it would not achieve the expected standard, even with more time. Expanding on the delays, the statement added the "overarching player experience and interface is not where [the company needs] it to be". Read more from Sky News: While Sports Interactive says it "could have pressed on", it was "unwilling to go beyond a March release" as it was "too late in the football season". The company added that its "full focus" is now on creating a new era for the Football Manager series.
