EC investigates Bengal BJP chief's wife for holding two voter IDs

The Election Commission (EC) has started an investigation into a complaint alleging that the wife of BJP's West Bengal president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar possesses two voter identity cards, a senior official said on Friday. Initial probe found that the minister's wife, Koel Majumdar, holds two voter ID cards with different EPIC numbers one registered in Balurghat and another in Jalpaiguri. While one card was issued under her maiden name, Koel Chowdhury, the second was created after her marriage under the name Koel Majumdar. "This could have been avoided had she submitted Form 18. It is the responsibility of the cardholder to notify the EC of any changes. In this case, the commission was not informed," the official said. He further explained that a new voter card was issued in Balurghat after she submitted Form 6. "Because the EPIC numbers and surnames were different, the error was not immediately detected. We are now verifying the photographs and other personal details to confirm the identity," he added. State's Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal has asked the district magistrates of Jalpaiguri and Dakshin Dinajpur to file a report on the matter as quickly as possible, EC sources said. Special arrangements planned for Bhagalpur's elderly voters

Senior citizens aged 90-99 (nonagenarians) and those over 100 (centenarians) will exercise their franchise across the district's assembly segments. According to updated figures as of April 19, 2025, there are 5,114 nonagenarian and 545 centenarian voters among Bhagalpur's 3,872,710 registered voters. "Special arrangements will be made to assist them," said district election officer (DEO) Sweta Kumari on Saturday. Among these, 680 nonagenarians and 53 centenarians are registered in Bihpur, 678 nonagenarians and 67 centenarians in Gopalpur, 446 nonagenarians and 31 centenarians in Pirpainty (SC), 766 nonagenarians and 92 centenarians in Kahalgaon, 609 nonagenarians and 59 centenarians in Bhagalpur, 1,097 nonagenarians and 150 centenarians in Sultanganj and 838 nonagenarians and 93 centenarians in Nathnagar. Deputy development commissioner (DDC) Pradip Singh said, "Bhagalpur district recorded a lower voting percentage in the 2024 parliamentary election compared to the 2020 assembly elections. Therefore, increasing turnout is necessary." An awareness programme targeting all sections of society, including voters aged 90 and above, is being planned. The DDC added that support from the public and political party workers is being sought to raise awareness. Regarding the electoral roll, the DDC said it received 13,513 applications for name additions (Form 6), 5,379 for deletions (Form 7) and 9,880 for corrections (Form 8) by April 18. "Efforts are underway to increase voter turnout and to ensure that nonagenarian and centenarian voters participate. We will encourage families to motivate senior members to cast their votes," Sweta Kumari told this newspaper.

Palm Beach County sheriff candidate Lauro Diaz fined for failing to disclose $1 million in assets

The Florida Commission on Ethics has levied a $500 fine against Lauro Diaz, a Republican candidate in last year's county sheriff election, for failing to disclose more than $1 million in assets on his campaign finance statement. The commission acted on a complaint filed by John Saroka of Wellington who pointed out that a filing by Diaz listed his net assets at $1.4 million while Diaz only listed assets of $338,000 — $138,000 in household goods and personal effects, $50,000 in cash and $150,000 in income from the Florida Retirement System. State law requires assets greater than $1,000 to be included. Saroka acknowledged to the commission that he came across the Diaz discrepancies while doing research for Michael Gauger, a Republican who defeated Diaz in the GOP primary. The complaint resulted in the state Ethics Commission charging Diaz with filing an inaccurate report; and the commission deciding to impose the $500 fine for violating the ethics code. Diaz did not challenge the ruling or dispute the finding that he violated state campaign finance laws. At issue was the Form 6, filed with the state agency, that requires all candidates seeking elected office or holding office to reveal their net worth, and to itemize their income and liabilities. Diaz was involved in a bitter primary battle with Gauger. Republican Diaz subsequently endorsed Democrat Sheriff Ric Bradshaw in the general election. Bradshaw was reelected in November by 15 points, defeating Gauger. In 2020, Diaz, as the Republican candidate, was soundly defeated by Bradshaw. Diaz told The Post last year that he found out about the Saroka complaint from The Palm Beach Post, noting that his report was accepted the way it was presented, and questioned why that would be if it was filed incorrectly. But following the state Ethics Commission investigation, Diaz admitted he failed to include the value of two houses he owns in Florida — one in Lake Placid and another in Loxahatchee. That accounted for the $1.1 million discrepancy. Saroka filed the complaint against Diaz shortly before the Republican primary. Gauger defeated Diaz by eight percentage points but the win was due to a strong showing by Gauger on vote-by-mail ballots. Diaz, as part of the settlement with the state Ethics Commission, agreed to ensure that future reports, should he again seek elected office, will be filed accurately.
