Siti Kasim unveils tragic death of unresolved tahfiz school pupil which bears semblance to Zara's fate

AS Malaysians awaits the autopsy report of Form One religious school pupil Zara Qairina Mahathir, Siti Kasim has detected a similar trend in the gruesome death of tahfiz school pupil Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman in December 2013. #KotaKinabalu #Sabah Jenazah Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, dibawa keluar dari Jabatan Perubatan Forensik, Hospital Queen Elizabeth I kira-kira 9.30 malam ini setelah proses bedah siasat selesai. Jenazah akan dikebumikan semula di Tanah Perkuburan Islam Tanjung Ubi, Kampung Mesapol,… — BERNAMA (@bernamadotcom) August 10, 2025 Believed to be a victim of bullying, the body of the then Form Four pupil was found hanging in the toilet of the Maahad Tahfiz Sains Nurul Aman dormitory in Kok Lanas, Kelantan on Dec 12, 2013 by the school's principal after smelling a foul odour from the toilet. Following the results of the autopsy, the case was classified as a sudden death and not related to criminal elements. However, in June 2016, the Coroner's Court ruled that Wan Faris' death was caused by the actions of an unknown individual, thus ruling out the possibility of suicide. 'Unfortunately for the victim's family, his death didn't receive wide coverage with his family having to cope with injustice surrounding his death,' the human rights activist and lawyer pointed out in a YouTube video. 'He was found hanging only wearing a black jacket outside his red t-shirt without any long pants, short pants nor men's brief while his genital was exposed. A pair of black long pants was found clogged in the toilet hole.' Editor's Note: On July 28, Wan Faris' family has filed a civil suit against three main parties, namely the Malaysian Government, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the investigating officer of the case. The legal action came after the victim's mother, Ruhani Hussin, 70, sought to unearth the truth as well as to seek justice for her son. This came about after a group of legal experts comprising political activist and former federal lawyer at the Attorney-Geneal's Chamber (AGC) Liyana Marzuki pooled their resources together in February this year to help the family on a pro bono basis. Endless drag Referencing court filings, Siti Kasim further revealed that Wan Faris had on Dec 9, 2013 engaged in a quarrel with some unidentified pupils. Additionally, more or less the same time, the victim had lodged a report on a fellow pupil who was then suspended for '(secretly) visiting the daughter of the school's owner'. 'It's strange that the police didn't suspect any foul play despite photos taken prior to Faris' body being removed from the school's toilet have shown signs of significant bruises on his back and buttock areas,' lamented Siti Kasim. 'Even more bizarre is the action by the school's authorities to demolish the toilet where the victim was found prior to the school's re-opening after the holiday break on grounds that the former wanted to prevent its pupils from experiencing trauma. 'Equally mind-boggling is the fact that the forensic/autopsy report on Faris' death was only issued on April 29, 2014 which was almost five months after the incident …' At the inquest proceeding that took place at the Kota Bahru Sessions Court in March 2016, the doctor who performed the autopsy went on to claim that there was low probability of Faris being murdered before he was hanged but was never queried on the injury to Wan Faris' back and buttock area. 'To cut a long story short, there is a mess or sheer incompetence in the conduct of the entire investigation process,' fumed Siti Kasim 'We must question the reluctance and hesitation by the relevant authorities to conduct investigation and reach a final verduct to a death more than a dozen years ago and the devastation endured by the victim's family.' She added: I'm unable to fathom how incidents of this nature continue to occur at (boarding) religious schools when the pupils are expected to be role models as they are exposed to religion and are even able to memorise the holy scripture. But sadly, bullying and other undesirable incidents tend to be a trend at religious schools with the authorities doing their utmost best to cover up probably because they're embarrassed that such cases involve religious initiations. I hope Wan Faris' family will eventually obtain justice like Zara … I urge social media influencers out there to revive this case so that the authorities concerned will pay attention to similar cases especially at boarding schools. As it is, the exhumation of Zara's remains for a proper post-mortem is attributable to immense public pressure when an autopsy should have been automatically conducted. There's a systemic problem in our country with the government having failed to inculcate professionalism in civil servants on the adherence of SOPs (standard operating procedures) or to prevent incidents of this nature from recurring. – Aug 11, 2025

Lawyer confirms viral audio clips feature voice of Zara Qairina, mother

KOTA KINABALU – Lawyer Hamid Ismail, representing the family of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, has confirmed that three voice recordings circulating online, purportedly featuring phone conversations between the teenager and her mother, Noraidah Lamat, are authentic. The viral audio clips, each about 44 seconds long, were widely shared on social media and shed light on Zara's fears for her safety, including her allegations of harassment by a group of senior students at her school. In one of the recordings, the teenager can be heard expressing distress about a senior student referred to as 'Kak M', stating her anxiety over potentially encountering the individual. 'Mum, I'm scared to bump into Kak M. The other day I asked someone to check with her sister and Kak M said, 'Yes, I still haven't forgiven Zara', Mum…' the voice believed to be Zara's can be heard saying. The clip also features the late student worrying about what might happen to her. 'What if she actually does something? The other day she said, 'If I touch you, you'll be bleeding'. If she does that, Mum, what will happen?,' she asked during the call. Although the exact date of the recording was unclear, the content had been previously referenced in statements issued by Hamid and the family's other lawyer Shahlan Jufri. In the third and fourth recordings, Zara described to her mother how her friend, Yasmin, was also a target of senior students' harassment. The third recording, lasting one minute and 36 seconds, recounted an incident where Yasmin was summoned to a Form Four classroom after being falsely accused of spreading rumours. 'Mum, don't say anything… Kak M is here. You know the call I made last night, right? That same night, Yasmin was suddenly called to the Form Four class. 'Mum, she almost got 'touched' yesterday… Thank God I wasn't called,' Zara said in a panicked tone. She further explained that Yasmin was accused of spreading a rumour about a senior girl liking a male student, a claim Zara said was baseless. 'She was framed because they said Yasmin claimed Kak Minas liked a senior. Yasmin swore on the Quran that it wasn't true,' Zara said. The fourth recording, lasting nearly two minutes, continued the conversation about Yasmin. In it, Zara explained how students were left with no choice but to obey orders from senior students. 'Mum… how could she not go? The senior came straight to her class and told her, 'Go upstairs now'. Then she followed her from behind. How could she run away? 'Yasmin followed… and as soon as she entered the classroom, she broke down crying. They were there for almost an hour,' Zara said. Zara also expressed fear of confronting the seniors, saying she felt intimidated even by threatening glances. 'The other day she gave me a quick stare… and I was already scared,' she said. The emotional exchanges between mother and daughter have gripped the nation since Zara's death was linked to bullying allegations at her school. The Form One student was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a religious boarding school in Papar on 16 July. She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) in Kota Kinabalu. Her death has sparked widespread public outcry, especially online, with renewed demands for serious action against bullying in schools.

Guar Chempedak crash: Parents hope for fair probe into teen's death

ALOR STAR: The parents of a Form Four student who died after being hit by a police officer's car have expressed hope that the investigation will be conducted fairly and transparently. Their son, Muhammad Nur Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi, 16, a student at SMK Guar Chempedak, succumbed to his injuries at 9pm last Thursday at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), three days after the accident. He had been riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a Perodua Axia driven by a policeman attached to the Yan district police headquarters. The incident occurred last Monday. His mother, Norliza Salleh, 44, said she and her ex-husband, Mohd Roshidi Alias, 44, are leaving the matter to the authorities, and hope the investigation will be conducted with integrity. Although a week has passed, Norliza, a nurse, said the pain of losing her second child remains indescribable. "On the night of the accident, he told me he was tired and asked for some money before I left for my night shift at Yan Hospital. "It was around 8.20pm. He held my hand and asked for money before we exchanged goodbyes. I told him to take care if he planned to go out, and he replied, 'Baik, Ibu.' Shortly after, at around 8.52pm, Norliza received a call from her mother, who was in tears as she informed her that Danial had been involved in an accident. "I had just arrived at work. Then an unknown number also called to inform me about the accident. Initially, I wanted to go straight to the scene, but I turned back when I was told he was being taken to Yan Hospital," she said. "I waited at the emergency unit and saw him being brought in. He was convulsing, probably due to head trauma. Blood was coming from his nose and mouth. It broke my heart. "I'm used to saving others in my job, but that night, seeing my child in that state just 30 minutes after I last saw him, was devastating. Norliza said her son was later transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star and admitted to the ICU, where he was pronounced dead three days later. She recalled that in the days leading up to the accident, her son had appeared withdrawn, which she assumed was due to his active involvement in school activities. "He was a kind boy who always offered help. When he heard that a friend's family member had died, he asked for some money to give as a donation. "He was diligent about his prayers and loved going to the mosque. I'm heartbroken. He even dreamed of flying on an aeroplane; his aunt had already booked him a ticket to Indonesia for next month. But he never got the chance. On Saturday, Kedah Police Chief Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah assured the public that the investigation into the incident would be carried out thoroughly and without compromise. He said an internal probe would also be conducted by the police's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department.

From Schoolbooks to Stadium Lights: Odongo ready to shine for Kenya at CHAN 2024

Published: Thursday, 31 July 2025 Just a year ago, Austin Odongo was sitting national exams in Homabay County. Now, the 19-year-old is preparing to line up for Kenya at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, marking a remarkable rise from schoolboy footballer to national team prospect. Odongo is not just one of the youngest players at the tournament — he is also one of the most intriguing stories. The midfielder, who recently completed Form Four (the final year of secondary school in Kenya), has been named in the final 25-man Harambee Stars squad for CHAN — a competition that exclusively features players from domestic leagues. And he has done it after just one season in top-flight football. 'I was really delighted when I received the call-up. It was a great reward after a good first season with Shabana,' Odongo told 'I felt really motivated even to know that the coach thought about me and I could provide solutions to his striking force. I am looking forward to this opportunity and to give my all for the team if given a chance.' From Youth Captain to Kenya Premier League Standout Odongo's breakthrough came during a Youth tournament organised by the Ministry of Sports, where he captained Homabay County to the title and caught the eye of scouts. Offers followed from various Kenyan Premier League clubs, but he chose Shabana FC, a fan-favourite side steeped in history, for his debut campaign. He didn't disappoint — scoring seven goals and registering two assists in just the second leg of the season. 'It was a really great experience of learning at Shabana. There was a lot to do in my debut in the Premier League and I am delighted with how I performed,' he said. 'It was great that I managed to settle in quickly and the club also gave me freedom and a conducive environment to work. I feel I have grown much since then and I am ready to move to the next level.' Second Chance at National Duty Odongo was part of Kenya's provisional squad for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, but narrowly missed out on the final selection. That setback seems to have fuelled his hunger — and this time, he's made it. The youngster is among those hoping to inspire Kenya in their CHAN debut, and their opening match against DR Congo at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani could be the stage for his international debut. 'This is a huge opportunity for me because it is a huge platform with the national team,' he said. 'Playing against teams from the rest of the continent with players who have massive experience is a huge thing. It also offers a platform to move my career to the next level because you never know who is watching. My ambition is to give my best for the team when called upon and ensure that we do well.' Kenya's 'Last Born' Now Looking Ahead Nicknamed the 'Last Born' of the team due to his age, Odongo is fast becoming a symbol of Kenya's next football generation. With the CHAN spotlight now firmly on East Africa, and scouts watching, the teenager could be on the cusp of something big. If he delivers, he may just announce himself not only as one for the future, but one for the present — for Kenya, and perhaps even for African football at large.

Teen abducted and assaulted in gang recruitment attempt in JB

JOHOR BARU: A Form Four student was abducted, assaulted, and blackmailed by a group attempting to force him into joining an underground society. The 17-year-old, known as Alex, had just finished playing badminton with friends in Pasir Pelangi on Thursday (July 17) evening when four cars stopped in front of the sports complex and six individuals forced him into a vehicle. "While in the car, they covered my eyes with a cloth and started slapping my face and hitting my head with their bare hands. "When we arrived at a bushy area, I was surprised to see more people, including some of my schoolmates, waiting there. "They took out wooden sticks from the boot of their cars and started bashing me. I used my arms to block the hits," Alex recounted at a press conference on Saturday (July 19). The group also took nude photos of him, threatening to spread them on social media if he refused to join their gang. "I was in a lot of pain and wanted them to stop attacking me, so I reluctantly agreed. They also threatened to physically hurt my family members if I told them about the incident or lodged a police report," he said, adding that he was eventually dropped off by the roadside. Alex revealed that a friend was also attacked on the same day by the same group but was too frightened to come forward. He sustained injuries to his arms, back, chest, face, and head and received medical treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah the following day. He mentioned that since transferring to his current secondary school four years ago, his schoolmates had been trying to coax him into joining their gang. "This has been happening since I was in Form One, but it was usually done verbally, and I refused each time. "This was the first time they assaulted me. Now, I am afraid of going to school, but I don't want to miss my lessons. I am also worried about my family's safety," he added. His grandmother, known as Kong, 55, said Alex initially kept the incident to himself out of fear. "When I came home from work that day, I noticed his swollen face and busted lip and asked him what was wrong. "He kept quiet at first, but I noticed bruises on his arms, so I lifted his shirt and was shocked to see his injuries," she said, urging authorities to investigate the matter. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed the report and stated that investigations are ongoing under Section 363 and Section 324 of the Penal Code for kidnapping a child from lawful guardianship and voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon. Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen, who organised the press conference, praised Alex for his courage to speak out. "The attack is despicable and should not have happened to a child whose focus should be on their studies," he said, encouraging others facing similar attacks to report the matter to their school and the police.
