Piastri beats Norris for Spanish GP pole

DPA Barcelona Championship leader Oscar Piastri conjured up a special lap to beat McLaren team-mate Lando Norris on Saturday and take pole position for the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix. The Australian was a mere 0.017 seconds behind Norris after his first flying lap in Q3, but put up a better performance in his second attempt to clock 1 minute 11.546 seconds and claim his fourth pole of the season. Former F1 driver David Coulthard praised Piastri's performance, saying: 'I think this is one of those moments where you go 'I remember where I was when I saw one of the best shootouts for pole position in some time'.' Piastri replied that his lap 'wasn't perfect.' 'But happy with what I put in. It has been a good weekend so far,' he said. Norris, who had benefited from a little tow from Piastri in the first lap, finished 0.209 behind his team-mate. The Red Bull of four-time defending champion Max Verstappen completed the top three, 0.302 off the pace. 'Oscar drove very well. The pace was there, just a couple of mistakes and yeah, didn't do it,' said Norris, who took pole in Spain last year but was beaten by Verstappen. The Dutchman, however, thinks that it will be 'tough to beat' McLaren this time in Sunday's race. 'We were lacking all weekend compared to them, but we executed well and that third position is where we should be. I'm here, squeezing everything out of the car,' Verstappen said. His performance was at least much better than the one of team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, who will start the race in last. Following Norris' win in Monaco last weekend, Piastri retained his lead in the standings, but only three points ahead of his team-mate. McLaren have dominated the season, with Piastri winning four and Norris two of the eight races so far. Verstappen is the only non-McLaren driver to claim victory at a grand prix this year, having won in Japan and Imola. The Mercedes of George Russell qualified fourth, followed by the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli. Charles Leclerc was seventh after he failed to resume the session following his first lap in Q3, but Ferrari did not explain why he had not returned to the track. Pierre Gasly of Alpine was eighth and Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls was ninth. Home favourite Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin was 10th quickest as he was cheered by the Spanish crowd. But compatriot Carlos Sainz was only 18th with the Williams. Piastri outpaces Norris to grab Spanish GP pole

"I'm very glad to be on pole here and now I just need a good start. It's a long run to the first corner!" (Photo by LLUIS GENE / AFP) Oscar Piastri outpaced title rival and McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in the final minute of a gripping qualifying session on Saturday to clinch pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix. The championship leader clocked a near flawless final lap of one minute and 11.546 seconds to beat Norris by 0.209 seconds as McLaren claimed a dominant one-two having also topped all three practice sessions. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. Charles Leclerc was seventh in the second Ferrari ahead of Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar and local hero two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. It was Piastri's fourth pole of the season and career as he seeks to extend his three-point lead ahead of Norris in the drivers' championship. 'Nicely done' 'Nice work, very nicely done, everyone,' said the cool 24-year-old Australian on team radio. 'That's quite some turnaround from last year. Well done everyone. Let's have some fun tomorrow!' He added: 'I'm very glad to be on pole here and now I just need a good start. It's a long run to the first corner!' Norris said: 'Oscar has driven really well and he deserved it. But it is a great result for the team.' Piastri's two-second advantage is the biggest this season between pole and second place. After an early fast lap from Aston Martin's Lance Stroll in Q1, the big guns arrived in torrid heat with a track temperature of 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), and the air at 29, punishing conditions for tyres on a high-degradation track. The session was briefly stalled when Alpine's Franco Colapinto stopped in the pitlane and, after a delay, forced others to undertake him leading to a frantic final two minutes. Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull was eliminated in 20th and last place along with Colapinto, Williams' Carlos Sainz – his worst qualifying result at his home event – in 18th, Esteban Ocon of Haas and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. For Tsunoda, it was a major setback as he sought to solve Red Bull's dilemma in searching for a partner to push Verstappen. At the front, Piastri topped Verstappen and Norris. In Q2, McLaren's duo led the first runs ahead of Verstappen, Russell and a revived Hamilton before choosing not to take a second go as Hadjar shone, taking sixth and splitting the Ferraris. Out went Alex Albon of Williams, Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson, Stroll and Oliver Bearman in his Haas. The top 10 shootout began with Piastri lapping in 1:11.836 before Norris overhauled him by 0.017sec for provisional pole on the opening charge. Russell was third ahead of Leclerc, Verstappen and Hamilton before a late Alonso lap lifted him to fifth amid roaring appreciation. Cloud cover affected conditions for the second runs as both McLaren men fought for pole with the Australian prevailing. It was McLaren's first front row lockout in Spain since 1998.

According to the Alzheimer's Association , NPH is a brain disorder in which excess fluid accumulates in the brain's ventricles, causing thinking and reasoning problems, difficulty walking, and loss of bladder control. Hydrocephalus Canada adds that NPH is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's, dementia or Parkinson's disease. 'A delayed diagnosis can be devastating and cause irreversible brain damage,' the group said. In a note to his fans, Joel, 76, said his battle with NPH worsened after recent live shows, 'leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.' 'Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,' a statement posted to his Instagram read. 'He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.' 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,' the musician added in his statement. A music industry source echoed that sentiment while speaking to PEOPLE. 'He is happiest while performing,' the insider said. 'Music is, has been and will always be his life. He's not ready to retire.' A second source close to Joel says, 'He is not retiring and hopes to be able to resume performing as his recovery progresses.' Joel's wife Alexis Roderick, with whom he shares daughters Della Rose Joel, 9, and Remy Anne Joel, 7, also addressed her husband's health as she thanked his fans for their 'love and support.' 'We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received. Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is father and husband who is at the center of our world,' she shared via Joel's official Instagram account on Monday. 'We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. After he cancelled a string of concerts scheduled between March and June following an onstage tumble the month before, Roderick said her husband was 'doing well' but added that going forward his 'health has to take priority, and things have to get postponed.' 'With the exception of COVID, he's been working every two weeks for 15-plus years,' Roderick said in an interview with Fox News earlier this month. 'And it's a lot. At 75, 76, there comes a time where you can't always plan out everything you need to do a year and a half in advance … But really, in the grand scheme of things, he's a healthy person, and he's well and working on himself, trying to get better and do what he has to do medically. So it's important, you know, we need him around so he has to do what he has to do.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Joel's ex-wife Christie Brinkley and daughter Alexa Ray Joel are also sending their love and support to the singer. Brinkley, who was married to the musician from 1985 to 1994, urged Joel to ' take good care' of himself as he embarks on his road to recovery. 'We all want you back in that white hot spotlight, you're OUR piano man. And we're always in the mood for your melodies and we all hope you're feeling alright! We Love You, the kids, me and an arena or two!' the 71-year-old supermodel wrote in the Instagram caption alongside a video of her and daughter Sailor Brinkley Cook dancing at one of Joel's concerts. Joel's daughter Alexa Ray, whom he shares with Brinkley, also shared a heartfelt message to her dad with her Instagram followers. Record breaker Norris seizes all-important pole for Monaco F1 GP

DPA Monaco McLaren's Lando Norris set a lap record when topping a thrilling qualifying session for Sunday's Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. Team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri broke the record, only for the Briton to beat it just seconds later. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc - who topped all three practice sessions - then went even quicker. But with time expiring on Saturday, Norris managed a remarkable 1 minute 09.954 seconds to put himself on pole and in a great position for the race. It was a first pole in Monaco for McLaren since 2007. The top 10 in the race last year was the same top 10 from qualifying, underlining the difficulties of overtaking on the famous twisting, street circuit. This year drivers must make at least two pit stops in the principality to boost excitement. Norris, after a 12th pole position and second this season, said: 'It's been a long time coming, I feel good, I don't think you realize how good this feels with quite a few struggles over the last couple of months, especially here in Monaco, it's a beautiful place and the hardest track probably to do it.' Leclerc, who will be second on the grid in his home race, added: 'I'm proud of the result today as on paper it was going to be a difficult weekend for us. But in the end it's not that bad.' Behind Piastri in third, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was fourth fastest having clipped the wall by the casino late in the third practice session and needing a new gearbox for qualifying. But he was summoned to the stewards for impeding Max Verstappen - who qualified fifth - in Q1 and was hit with a three-place grid penalty, meaning he will start from seventh. Red Bull's world champion Verstappen, who fended off the McLarens to win the last race in Imola, moved up to fourth on the grid. The impressing Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso were promoted to fifth and sixth, respectively, due to Hamilton's penalty. Nightmare for the Silver Arrows Mercedes' George Russell came to a stop in the tunnel with an apparent electrical problem to red flag Q2 and place only 14th. Team-mate Kimi Antonelli crashed in Q1 shortly after exiting the tunnel. He had already managed a time to reach Q2 but his car was too damaged to continue and he will start 15th on Sunday's grid. It was the first time since Imola 2022 that both Mercedes cars failed to reach Q3. Ferrari have struggled so far this season, despite the addition of seven-time world champion Hamilton to their line-up. Their only podium finish this year was Leclerc's third place in Saudi Arabia in April. But the Italian outfit will hope Monegasque Leclerc can somehow get past Norris, on pit stops if needed. Failure to comply with the two pit-stop rule in Monaco will result in disqualification. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin is carrying a grid penalty for Sunday's grand prix for causing a collision with Leclerc in first practice on Friday. Haas driver Ollie Bearman, who like Stroll went out in Q1, will join him at the back of the grid after a 10-place penalty following a red flag breach during second practice. Piastri tops the drivers' standings with 146 points, 13 ahead of Norris.
