Report: FGCU Athletics vacates 82 wins, 2 ASUN titles
May 31 - The NCAA concluded its investigation of Florida Gulf Coast athletics and the university will vacate 82 combined wins and two Atlantic Sun Championships between 2022 and 2024, the Fort Myers News-Press reported Friday. Last month, the NCAA placed FGCU Athletics on two years of probation and fined the program $25,000 in a settlement agreement. The investigation concluded that FGCU allowed student-athletes to compete before certifying their eligibility. The programs involved were men's tennis, softball, baseball, men's and women's basketball and women's golf. Per the News-Press, the diamond sports both vacated ASUN titles. The softball program vacated 31 wins, its 2024 conference championship and an NCAA Tournament win over Florida Atlantic. The baseball program vacated 22 victories, their 2024 co-championship and a win over the 16-ranked Florida State Seminoles on March 4. The troubles for the Fort Myers, Fla. school started in the summer of 2023 when tennis coach Davidson Kozlowski violated NCAA rules in the recruitment of Harrison Gold, a student from Bucknell University. Gold continued to take classes at the Lewisburg, Pa. university, but trained with the Eagles, lived in southwest Florida and ran up $10,000 in hotel costs. Kozlowski, who had just been hired from Drake University in June 2023, was fired seven months later before ever coaching a match. During an internal investigation of Kozlowski, FGCU discovered that 18 athletes in 10 different sports practiced or competed prior to becoming eligible. These occurred in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years. The university self-reported and cooperated with the NCAA over a 16-month review. Seventeen of the 18 student-athletes were eventually reinstated. The men's basketball team vacated nine victories, including a win over No. 7 Florida Atlantic on Dec. 30, 2023. The men's tennis team vacated its entire 2024 season, when they lost 14 of 19 matches. --Field Level Media

Solo travelers secretly charged up to 70% more by these major US airlines
American Airlines, Delta and United are all quietly charging solo travelers more than those in groups, it's been revealed. In some cases, solo travelers are reportedly paying up to 70 percent more. Travel sites Thrifty Traveler and View From The Wing discovered that the carriers, the three biggest in the US, have been using this pricing tactic on select domestic routes. Thrifty Traveler's Kyle Potter wrote: "While it's not widespread – you won't see it on each and every route – it's real and undeniable." Researchers inputted flights with all three airlines, changed the number of passengers, then watched fares drop instantly. The Independent was able to replicate two of the price changes. We discovered, as Thrifty Travel did, that it's possible to reduce the cost of a flight from Charlotte to Fort Myers with American Airlines by $149, from $482 to $333, by booking for two people instead of one. And on Google Flights we saw a solo travel fare for an American flight from Chicago O'Hare one-way to Lexington in Kentucky fall by 50 percent, from $215 to $107, when the number of travelers was doubled to two. Discounts for bulk buys are triggered in lots of consumer environments, from supermarkets to rail travel, but many travelers will be surprised to see this pricing strategy used by airlines, especially in an under-the-radar fashion. The discounts aren't made explicit when booking. Rhys Jones, Aviation Editor at described the practice as "unfair". He told The Independent: "Unlike hotel rooms, where you can share to save money, you can't share a plane seat and therefore the practice of charging solo travelers more can seem particularly unfair, especially as single people already often pay more versus those who are coupled up. "Unfortunately, airlines will always try and sell tickets for the maximum price they can charge whilst also filling aircraft, and whilst someone who is traveling for business might not blink an eye, another traveling alone on holiday might not have the same means." However, Gilbert Ott, frequent flier and Founder of travel site remarked that travelers should essentially grin and bear it, especially in the age of AI, which could see the advent of more intense "personalized pricing". He told The Independent: "People must wrap their heads around the concept that seats are commodities and just like all other goods, bulk discounts often apply. When we buy a six-pack of beer from the supermarket, we get a discount, for example. "We've seen countless airlines offer companion fares, with discounts buying for two. I get that it can be frustrating, and as a frequent solo and not-solo traveler, I win some and I lose some. "We'll see more personalized pricing as airlines leverage AI."

Seahawks speak on state tournament expectations
FORT MYERS, Fla. (WMBB) – In preparation for their Class 3A state semifinal matchup, the South Walton Seahawks held a light practice Sunday, on a replica field of Hammond Stadium — the site of the state tournament. The practice field was selected for its close resemblance to the dimensions and playing surface of Hammond Stadium. South Walton's home field features turf, while the tournament will be played on a traditional grass and dirt infield. During practice, players spoke about the team's expectations in Fort Myers and the variables they anticipate facing in the semifinal. 'The field is very similar to what we'll play on tomorrow morning,' head coach Nick Borthwick said. 'We wanted to get out and take ground balls on a surface that matches what we'll face.' While the infield is manageable, the outfield — and weather conditions — are expected to be more challenging. 'It's definitely hot,' senior outfielder Cameron Tipton-Thomas said. 'You have to hydrate if you even want to survive it. Everything's bigger out here. Our home field is 295 feet to center; this one's 330. But I've played on big fields my whole life, so I'm prepared.' Despite the changes in scale and conditions, players remain focused on execution and composure heading into the matchup. 'The preparation stays the same,' senior pitcher Braxton Varnes said. 'But it's that extra 10 percent of concentration — that little edge — that can finish the job.' South Walton is no stranger to this stage. The Seahawks finished second in the state last year, completing a historic postseason run. But this time around, the senior class says nothing short of a championship will be satisfying. 'Senior night was emotional,' senior shortstop Frank Wells said. 'Our coaches told us to leave a legacy. Most of us have been here three or four years. We've been through the ups and downs, and we've flipped the script. South Walton used to be seen as just a baseball school — now we're a powerhouse.' Junior Denton Lord will take the mound as the starting pitcher for the semifinal. He said he's excited and ready for the biggest game of the season. 'I feel really good,' Lord said. 'This is a great group, and we've had a great year. I'm ready to keep it rolling. This is the biggest game of the year, and I'm proud to be the one taking the mound.' Lord also credited the community's support for boosting the team's confidence. 'Seeing our whole town send us off like that — it meant a lot,' he said. 'Win or lose, we know we have people behind us.' South Walton will take the field Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, aiming for a return to the state championship game.
