Liverpool report: Jeremie Frimpong has given agreement to join, with 'quickfire' deal wanted
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Liverpool are moving on quickly from Trent Alexander-Arnold, with talks set for Jeremie Frimpong. The Reds right-back announced yesterday on his social media channels that after 20 years at Anfield – from the academy to the first team, having won everything at club level – he would be leaving the club on a free transfer at the end of the season. Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid in the coming weeks, with Liverpool now tasked with replacing him. Former Manchester City academy graduate Frimpong – ranked at no.2 in FourFourTwo's list of the best right-backs in the world right now behind Alexander-Arnold at no.1 – is a long-term target for the Reds in defence. Last summer, it was reported that the Dutchman was keen on a move to Anfield, though Alexander-Arnold remaining at the club for another year seemed to prevent any kind of transfer from materialising. Since then, the Bayer Leverkusen star has been linked more concretely, with TEAMtalk now relaying reports that talks have taken place over a move recently, in the hope of Liverpool securing a 'quickfire' transfer. The report states that Frimpong has shown 'willingness to make the move', seemingly acknowledging claims from earlier this season. Writing for Sky Sports Switzerland, renowned Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri stated in December 2024 that he had 'reliable' information that Frimpong has given his 'approval' to move to Liverpool, affirming these latest claims that a deal could be straightforward. FourFourTwo understands that Frimpong had a release clause at one point during his time in the Bundesliga to be worth around €40 million – but while that was said to expire last summer, another could possibly now be in place. Liverpool are said to be preparing an offer to Leverkusen either way, according to Empire of the Kop, meaning that they could be about to negotiate a fee for the 24-year-old. Transfermarkt values Frimpong to be worth at €50m. Liverpool host Arsenal when Premier League action resumes this weekend.

Liverpool close to Florian Wirtz confirmation, following transfer 'embarrassment': report
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Liverpool are on the verge of confirming Florian Wirtz as a Reds player. The Merseysiders lifted the Premier League title at the weekend – Liverpool's 20th English title in all – with manager Arne Slot suggesting that after a meagre first summer in charge in which the club only brought in Federico Chiesa, there would be transfer activity in the coming weeks. 'We didn't do a lot, and that makes it maybe even more special to win it this season,' Slot said in his post-match press conference. 'Now we will see if the team needs. We can do things better already by ourselves without adding any players. But if we can then we will definitely do so.' After Wirtz' parents were spotted in the UK eyeing up a new house ahead of a move, it was reported that the Reds' hierarchy had approved the decision to break the club's transfer record for the no.10. Virgil van Dijk still holds the all-time transfer record at Anfield, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Liverpool's first bid for Wirtz was in excess of €100 million. Now, German publication BILD have reported via Sport Witness that Wirtz is set to move to the Premier League, while calling the whole saga an 'embarrassment' for Bayern Munich. Bayern legend and former FourFourTwo columnist Lothar Matthaus has shared his thoughts, calling the imminent deal 'painful' for Die Roten's honorary president Uli Hoeness, who has gone on record to state the club's interest in Wirtz. 'This is a defeat for Bayern, and for Uli Hoeness personally, certainly the most painful in the transfer market in recent times: he had repeatedly stated that Wirtz was their absolute dream player, and that Bayern would pull out all the stops to sign him,' Matthaus says. 'Bayern is simply not the no.1. The Premier League, with its quality at the top and its breadth, is the best league in the world, with great intensity and pace.' Wirtz is ranked at no.3 in FourFourTwo's list of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now, and in addition to him joining the Premier League champions, moves for Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong are also in the works. The playmaker is valued at €140m by Transfermarkt.

Sir Rod Stewart's lookalike teenage sons make rare red carpet appearance
Sir Rod Stewart made an appearance with his teenage sons at the Mission Impossible 8 London premiere last night – and the resemblance was uncanny. The Maggie May singer, 80, posed on the Leicester Square red carpet for The Final Reckoning alongside his wife Penny Lancaster, 54, and their two children – Alastair Wallace, 19, and Aiden Patrick, 14. While Penny sported a yellow silky dress and white blazer, Sir Rod wore a velvet jacket with a frilly, unbuttoned white shirt and necklaces underneath. The two teens wore matching black tie suits, and sported similar smart mousey brown haircuts too. While Alastair was Sir Rod and Penny's first child together, the teen was the rocker's seventh child. The Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? hitmaker's first child was Sarah Streeter, now 61, who he welcomed with his girlfriend of the time, Susannah Boffey, when he was just a 'stone broke' teenager. She was put up for adoption, and they reconnected years later. Sir Rod then welcomed Kimberly Stewart, 45, and Sean Stewart, 44, with ex-wife Alana Stewart, Then came Ruby Stewart, 37, who Sir Rod shares with ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg, before he and ex-wife Rachel Hunter welcomed Renee Stewart, 32, and Liam Stewart, 30. Alastair, who is finding his feet in the world of modelling, seems to have a close relationship with Sir Rod, as they often pose together on social media. A few months after Aiden's birth in 2011, Sir Rod explained that he was hoping to enjoy his kids, rather than focus on his career. He told People: 'I'm trying to make more time now that I've carved out my career. I want to enjoy my kids. We're all planning a massive vacation somewhere. 'It's hard to get them all together because they are all off in different directions. But I am so proud of them.' In 2022, Sir Rod revealed Aiden had been rushed to hospital after he collapsed during a football match. Sir Rod said: 'We thought my boy had a heart attack.' Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, the singer continued: 'He was going blue and was unconscious until he calmed down. It was scary, but it turned out to be a panic attack. The lad wanted to do well, pulled on the Hoops in Scotland for his dad. This comes in a big year for Sir Rod – who turned 80 in January – as he is set to perform the coveted legend slot on Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage in June. More Trending The legend slot sees music icons of decades-long, award-winning, chart-topping calibre take to the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday afternoon of the festival each year (usually kicking off from 3.15pm to 4.30pm). While there was some backlash at Sir Rod filling the slot, with huge hits including Maggie May, I Don't Want To Talk About It, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?, All For Love, and Sailing, he does fit the bill. Just last year his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra album with Jools Holland got him his 11th No. 1 UK album, and he's one of the best-selling artists in history having sold over 250million records worldwide. ‘When we saw Busquets exaggerating, we felt a great injustice had been done. It made us mentally strong. We gave everything, we left our souls on the pitch': Javier Zanetti on how Inter Milan 'left their souls on the pitch' against Barcelona in 2010
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Inter Milan enjoyed the greatest season in their 100-plus year history in 2009/10, when manager Jose Mourinho led the Nerazzurri to the club's first-ever treble. The achievement was secured when Inter saw off Bayern Munich 2-0 thanks to a Diego Milito brace in the Champions League final, but the chance to seal their place in the history books only came after an epic semi-final battle against a star-packed Barcelona side. Mourinho's men, led by skipper and club legend Javier Zanetti, were able to come back from a goal down at the San Siro to claim a 3-1 first-leg advantage, but were well aware of the task facing them at Camp Nou in the return fixture. Zanetti - who made more than 850 appearances for Inter and was ranked at no.96 in FourFourTwo's list of the sport's best-ever players - picks up the story. 'A week later came the ultimate test: the Camp Nou,' he tells FourFourTwo. 'You could feel that Barcelona were going to try to turn the tie around, that every home fan that night was convinced they could beat us. The tifo display that their supporters unveiled before kick-off was beautiful. 'But just like against Chelsea, Jose Mourinho kept us all calm. He was convinced, 3-1 down after the first match, that Barça needed a magical night to beat us – if it happened, we would accept it. Maybe our opponents were under additional pressure because the final was at the Bernabeu, but we didn't think about that. We just focused on doing our job. 'In the 28th minute, our challenge became huge – Thiago Motta was sent off. I told the referee that a red card was way too much – Motta didn't want to harm Sergio Busquets, he simply put his arm out to protect the ball. 'When we saw Busquets exaggerating with his reaction, we felt a great injustice had been done. Suddenly, it was like climbing Everest: at the Camp Nou, with 10 men, and against a team full of legendary players. We had to give more than just football – we needed character, personality and pride. That red card made us mentally strong. We gave everything, we left our souls on the pitch.' Zanetti credits this Herculean effort to his manager and the preparation that Mourinho instilled in his squad. 'It was the best defensive performance of our careers, but we were prepared for it,' he continues. 'That season, Mourinho made us train multiple times with 10 men against 11, to get used to suffering if that situation occurred. He knew that at some stage we'd have to face this challenge, and it happened in a Champions League semi-finals. 'We'd repeat exercises with four defenders and two midfielders being tormented by eight or nine players. It wasn't easy to surprise us. Do you know why? Because all of the pressure is on the attacker. When you come up against an organised block, it's difficult to find space. That's what we did in Barcelona.'

'I'd like to put Roy Keane feud to bed, but he doesn't want to'
Jason McAteer would love to end his decades long feud with Roy Keane and bury the hatchet once and for all. However, the ex-Liverpool star admits that it isn't likely to happen anytime soon. Keane and McAteer's long-running feud has stretched on for more than two decades, reaching a boiling point in 2002 when Keane was sent off for swinging an elbow at McAteer just months after the Irishman was involved in the infamous 'Saipan' saga with then Ireland manager Mick McCarthy. We all know what happened next, Keane and McCarthy fell out and Roy never played at the 2002 World Cup where Ireland crashed out on penalties at the round of 16 stage against Spain. Keane and McAteer actually played in midfield for Ireland throughout the 2002 qualifying campaign, and while the pair have their differences, McAteer still has fond memories of playing next to arguably the greatest Irish player of all time. "I was in a midfield two with Roy,' McAteer told FourFourTwo magazine, 'During that 2002 qualifying campaign, I played alongside one of the finest midfielders of his generation at the peak of his powers. To be in the same team as him was an honour, to be honest. 'As a player, Roy was absolutely sensational. As a person, he's very complex. There are two sides to him. I see the pantomime villain that he plays on television, and that suits him – people like it, there's a demand for it. 'But I've also seen the emotional side, the funny side, and I like that character. Sadly, I get to deal with the pantomime villain now. 'Regrettably, our friendship is fractured. Our relationship broke down on a football pitch – we had a clash. At the end of the day, I'm on the pitch to win – I'll do whatever I need to do to win for my team. If that upset him by getting to him personally, that's the nature of the beast. 'I had the better of him on that occasion and he knows it. We should have shaken hands afterwards, but we didn't and then people wanted to make more of it. He wanted to make more of it. 'I wanted to put it to bed. I'd still like to put it to bed, but he doesn't want to so I'm just going to have to deal with it.'
