Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr return for slasher sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer

LOS ANGELES – For fans of 1990s Hollywood horror – when the slasher genre was revitalised by charismatic young stars – the new I Know What You Did Last Summer film is both a good old-fashioned scare and nostalgic throwback. Now showing in Singapore cinemas, it is the fourth instalment in the iconic franchise that began with 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. It is also a full-circle moment for American actors Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. They reprise their roles from the original film and the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which launched their careers at a time when the box office was ruled by films such as these, along with early chapters of the Scream franchise (1996 to present), The Faculty (1998) and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). The latest movie revolves around five friends who cover up their part in a deadly car accident. A year later, one of them receives an ominous note saying, 'I know what you did last summer', and a vengeful killer with an ice hook begins picking the gang off one by one. The quintet is played by American actors Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon. But at the film's Los Angeles premiere earlier in July, all eyes are on original stars Hewitt, 46, and Prinze Jr, 49. They play Julie James and Ray Bronson, who in the first film found themselves in a similar predicament after accidentally killing a boy in a hit-and-run. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Prinze Jr enjoyed working with the new cast. 'I love working with young people,' says the actor, who met his future wife, American actress Sarah Michelle Gellar – now 48 and the mother of their two children aged 12 and 15 – on the set of the 1997 film, where she played one of the other teens being stalked. Hewitt saw her role on set as being there to support the younger ones, not steal their thunder. 'I wanted to give them space, and to know that this was not mine, it was theirs. And just be there to support and love and give guidance in any way that I could, or give no guidance at all – whatever they wanted,' she says. 'And I was blown away and very touched by all the respect and love that Freddie and I were given for being in the original.'

Jennifer Love Hewitt Has 'No Idea' How Feud Rumors With Sarah Michelle Gellar Even Started
There is no feud, people! That is what Jennifer Love Hewitt wants everyone to know when it comes to her relationship with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the wake of the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel release. But the 46-year-old actress seems just as perplexed as everyone else as to how the rumors even began. More from SheKnows Freddie Prinze Jr. Shuts Down the 'Hot' Hollywood Couple Myth About Sarah Michelle Gellar Marriage Hewitt had to go all the way back to 1997 — yes, 28 years ago — to figure out why people believe they are frenemies. 'I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be,' she said in a July 18 interview with Vulture. 'I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?' 'I haven't seen Sarah,' she continued. 'Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That's why it's so funny to me. People were like, 'Say something back.' And I'm like, 'What am I going to say? I've not seen her.' On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from.' So, while they aren't besties, they don't hate each other either. Hewitt and Gellar went their separate ways in 1997 and lived their lives. There isn't any bad blood, and even Gellar had to address the situation in a July 16 Instagram post. 'For everyone asking – I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened,' Gellar wrote in the comments. 'And unfortunately, JLH didn't come to the after party. If you have ever been to one of these, it's crazy. I sadly didn't get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn't change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately, some things happen only in real life and not online.' This isn't the first time Gellar has addressed their reported feud — it reared its ugly head in December 2024 after she had an awkward interview with Extra. Fans thought she was dissing Hewitt, but Gellar insisted she didn't want to reveal any I Know What You Did Last Summer spoilers ahead of filming. Gellar, who also starred in the 1997 film with Hewitt and her now-husband Freddie Prinze Jr., wasn't in the sequel because — spoiler alert — her character was killed in the first movie. She's now busy working on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot for Hulu. So, let's call this Hollywood case closed. Sarah Michelle Gellar dishes on her shock I Know What You Did Last Summer cameo
Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed if she is in I Know What You Did Last Summer redo. On Thursday the 48-year-old blonde came clean about her participation that stars her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. Turns out the Buffy The Vampire Slayer did indeed shoot scenes for the highly anticipated reboot. 'Spoiler alert ‼️ Helen Shivers is still dead,' Gellar began her caption. 'When anyone asked me if I was going to be in the new @ikwydlsmovie I never lied. I always answered 'I am dead,'' noted the Hollywood veteran. 'And honestly I didn't see how I could be in the movie until @jennkaytin and @samlansky pitched me that crazy dream sequence with @madelyncline I still can't believe we were able to keep is a secret.' Gellar finished with: 'Long live dead Helen Shivers the og Croaker Queen.' Her pal Lisa Rinna commented: 'Once a queen, always a queen, honey.' Heather Graham hit the like button. Geller and Prinze, 49, met on the set of 1999's I Know What You Did Last Summer. The action star revealed on social media in November 2024 that she was with Prinze in Australia for production on the fright flick. Geller's Helen Shivers was killed in the 90s film. Prinze, 49, reprises his role as Ray Bronson and Jennifer Love Hewitt, 46, returns as Julie James. Geller also admitted the long awaited Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was also in the works, but said she wasn't allowed to talk about any details. 'We won't do it until we know we're 100-percent ready and we're confident that we are giving you something that the audience is asking for, that's also original in its own right.' The rebooted Buffy will make it to the small screen sometime in 2026. The new I Know What You Did Last Summer debuted in theaters July 18. Meanwhile, Hewitt's return to I Know What You Did Last Summer came down to a deep 'love' of the horror franchise. The 45-year-old actress is reprising her role as Julie James nearly 30 years after first appearing in the iconic teen slasher, and has now credited the new film's creative team with bringing the franchise back with a lot of heart. She told Variety of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky: 'What was very apparent from the word 'Go' is how much both of them loved the original movie. 'I feel like, if you're going to go back and make something new but pay homage to an original, you have to love it. You have to understand it. 'So, I was just blown away and it meant a lot to me.' The new instalment, set for release in 2025, follows a fresh group of teenagers in Southport, North Carolina, who are stalked by a copycat killer after a deadly accident. Jennifer's character Julie is contacted by the young group and asked for help – drawing her and fellow survivor Ray Bronson, played by Prinze Jr., back into the chaos of their past. Jennifer last played Julie in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. She was not involved in the 2006 direct-to-video follow-up or the 2021 reboot series. Kaytin and Sam offered a different approach, directly continuing the storyline of the original 1997 film. The creative team behind the project involved Jennifer in shaping Julie's character in the present day – a trauma expert and professor, recently divorced from Ray and determined never to return to Southport. The actress added: 'They allowed space for me to know her better than anyone, which was so kind because they didn't have to do that. 'I felt very seen as somebody who had created her the first time.' Julie plays a major role in the second and third acts of the film, mentoring Ava = played by Chase Sui Wonders – and helps to unmask two killers. The film also brings back Brandy Norwood as Karla, Julie's college roommate from I Still Know, in a surprise credits scene teasing yet another chapter in the series.

Sarah Michelle Gellar gives huge update on Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot
Don't miss out on the headlines from Movies. Followed categories will be added to My News. Sarah Michelle Gellar is single-handedly keeping the memory of the 90s alive for millennials this year. Earlier in 2025, she announced that she'll be stepping back into Buffy Summers' stylish boots, and now she's once again seemingly risen from the dead with a surprise cameo in Sony's reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Gellar became a horror icon when she starred alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe and future husband Freddie Prinze Jr in the original 90s horror flick as enigmatic beauty queen, Helen Shivers. The Hollywood star has partnered with Uber One in celebration of Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer . Picture: Supplied Despite being perhaps the biggest star in the movie, Gellar's character is killed off in a heartbreaking moment that's considered among horror fans be to be one of the best chase scenes ever put on film. While Gellar previously rubbished demands to return to the reboot, reminding fans that 'she's dead', it turns out the screen icon was keeping her cards very close to her chest. Speaking with about her new partnership with Uber One on their new advert that sees Gellar once again come face-to-face with the film's eerie fisherman himself, she revealed that she does indeed make a surprise return in the new movie that's out now in cinemas. 'So the first thing I can clarify is that I never said I wasn't going to be in it!' she laughed. 'I actually didn't intend to do it.' She explained that the movie's writer and director, Jennifer Robinson, who just so happens to be one of her closest friends – they talk twice a day, every day – insisted that she would find a way to bring back the fan favourite character. But Gellar wasn't convinced at first. 'She told me about three years ago that she wanted to do this and I was like, that's great. I'll help you with Freddy and I'll anything you need with the movie. I just can't be in it. She's like, 'I'm gonna figure out a way.' And I was like, 'There's no way. I'm dead. I'm not going to be a weird twin!'' Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr at the premiere of the new horror flick. Picture: Getty. Gellar as Helen Shivers in the original movie. Picture: Sony Despite her initial refusal to make a cameo, Robinson eventually found a way to bring back Shivers that Gellar felt honoured the character well enough to walk back onto set in the cover of darkness. 'I was getting up at five in the morning, sneaking into this set. I was not allowed to go outside the entire day that I was filming. because I was in the costume. So I literally was inside for an entire day.' The horror flick was shot entirely here in Australia, and Gellar's collaboration with Uber One came about while she and husband Prinze Jr were living in a home in Rose Bay. 'I usually do all the Uber ordering at home. And before we left, I said to him 'You have to get Uber for Australia because you're going to need it to get around and to order food,' so he finally let me put it onto his phone,' she shared. 'Our first favourite [order] was this great coffee shop in Rose Bay. I wish I could remember the name but they had the most wonderful Turkish coffee and little desserts that we ordered at least every other day while we were in Australia.' The 90s icon went on to share how much she 'loves' spending time Down Under, admitting that it's 'the one place' where she could see herself moving with her family at some point in the future. Gellar's role as Buffy is considered one of the most memorable TV performances of the last three decades. Picture: Supplied. Gellar went on to reveal that the hugely anticipated reboot of the show is set to get into production sooner than fans may have first realised. 'We're getting really close. We have to make sure everything is done right. But I will say we are filming very soon,' she teased. Ever since the reboot was first announced fans have been eager to know which of Buffy's pals might be seen returning to the show alongside her. In the original show, fan favourite character Anya, who was originally supposed to be in a handful of episodes only to become one of the most beloved characters, dies in the show's finale. It's a brutal second-long scene and for years fans have felt she was owed more. When I quizzed Gellar on whether the vengeance demon, played by Emma Caulfield, could return, she confessed that she's very much 'on the list' to come back. Emma Caulfield [right] could be making a comeback to the Buffy reboot, as long as Disney gives Gellar the budget. Picture: Warner. 'I will do my best to honour the original show while also giving a chance to the new characters. I tell everyone to be patient because if we bring back all of the new characters right away, then the audience doesn't have time to like and get to the know the new characters. They won't give them the time of day. So I want to make sure I do spend the right amount of time establishing the new characters.' 'But anyone that follows me knows that Emma and I are very close and obviously, you know, they're all on my list. 'We have to get Hulu and Disney to give us enough episodes, over the course of a couple of years, so we can bring everybody back. All the budget as well!' she said. I asked Gellar how she feels about the legacy of acclaimed Buffy episode The Body, in which she gives an incredible performance as Buffy deals with the shocking sudden death of her mother. Despite being heaped with praise at the time, because Buffy was still seen as a teen-leaning show on a lesser network, Gellar mostly missed out during awards season, only scoring one Golden Globe nomination in the end. Discussing whether she felt respected within the industry at the time, Gellar replied: 'That's an interesting question. I know a lot of people behind the scenes and on the set did feel that they [awards and critics] weren't for me. But I make the show for the fans, not for awards and critics.' 'And so I really felt the love,' insisted the star. 'If there was a nomination for an award from fans, we always won and people loved it and and so for me, that was the joy that I got. 'And I do have a Daytime Emmy,' she chuckled. 'It's very nice!' Gellar's new I Know What You Did Last Summer campaign ties in with Uber One's partnership with HOYTS, offering perks for members including discounted tickets ($12.50 for general admission, $27.50 for HOYTS LUX) and unlimited free popcorn refills.
