Cyclist killed, two injured in collision with bus on Chapman's Peak Drive
A cyclist has been killed and two others injured in an accident involving a bus on Chapman's Peak Drive in Hout Bay on Saturday morning. According to Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, the accident occurred at 10:05, claiming the life of the cyclist. 'A 56-year-old male was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, and another male sustained minor injuries,' he said, adding that the circumstances surrounding the accident were still under investigation. A case of culpable homicide has been registered. The road was closed to traffic following the accident and has since been reopened. More details will be added once received.

Flying squad makes R700k drug bust in Cape Town
A tip-off about suspected drug dealing at a fast-food establishment has dished up a stash of Mandrax with an estimated street value of R700,000 in Athlone, Cape Town. Maitland Flying Squad members found three vehicles at the address in Belgravia just after 1pm on Wednesday. 'They found three vehicles — a white Mercedes-Benz, a white Renault and a white Hyundai — in the parking area. The members observed the occupants and noticed one suspect take a black bag out of one vehicle, putting it into his vehicle,' said police spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk 'They approached the vehicles and two of the suspects attempted to walk away but were apprehended. The members searched the vehicles and found in one 3,000 Mandrax tablets and in another an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.' Additional information led police to a premises in Crawford where they found another 13,000 Mandrax tablets and schedule 1 medicine. A 58-year-old woman and four men aged between 48 and 60 were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear soon in the Athlone magistrate's court.

Bricks of cocaine worth R18m and guns seized in Cape Town CBD
Fifteen bricks of cocaine worth an estimated R18m have been seized with several firearms from a storage facility in the Cape Town CBD. The police raid on a self-storage facility in Roeland Street on Tuesday also led to the arrest of a 40-year-old man for allegedly dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. 'Armed with intelligence about drugs and firearms being stored at the address, the officers operationalised the information and pounced on the self-storage facility where they found the suspect at one of the units,' said spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk. 'They conducted a search of the unit upon which they discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15kg [1kg each] with an estimated street value of R18m as well as one AK-47 rifle, an Uzi, five 9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.' The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court soon. The bust was the culmination of an intelligence-led operation by members of the police anti-gang unit, crime intelligence and provincial organised crime detectives. Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile said the drugs and firearms could have caused havoc in the wrong hands in communities where gang and gun violence are prevalent.

Foreign national arrested with R1 million and stolen bank cards
Police arrested a 38-year-old foreign national in Parklands, Western Cape during the early hours of Tuesday, 13 May 2025, after discovering more than R1 million in local and foreign currency. According to South African Police Service, members of the Provincial Operational Command Centre arrested the suspect. Western Cape provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said officers acted on drug-related information and raided a residence in Holly Crescent, Table View. During the search, officers discovered more than R1 million in foreign and South African currency, along with a bag containing bank cards belonging to various individuals. The occupants of the house failed to provide a legitimate reason for being in possession of the cash and bank cards. 'The occupants of the residence failed to give a valid reason for possessing the items. Officers arrested the 38-year-old suspect on suspicion of possessing suspected stolen property and conspiring to commit cybercrime,' said Van Wyk. The suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 15 May 2025. Detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime, Commercial Unit, are investigating and may file additional charges as the case develops. Cape cops arrest man with more than R1m in cash packed in bag
Cape Town police arrested a man in the early hours of Tuesday with more than R1m in local and foreign currency, a large number of bank cards and several cellphones. Members of the provincial operational command centre raided a property in Table View, acting on information about suspected drug dealing. 'T hey ensued with a search. Not only did the members find the cash but also a bag with bank cards belonging to various people,' said police spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk. ' The occupants of the residence were unable to provide a valid reason for possessing the items and the 38-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of suspected stolen property and conspiracy to commit cybercrime.'
