HMS Dragon sailors set to come to Wrexham this week

Friday (June 13), will see crew members of the Royal Navy vessell celebrate their Freedom of the City for the first time, after they were granted the honour last December. In doing so, HMS Dragon joined Wrexham Football Club, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Royal Welsh (formerly the Royal Welch Fusiliers), North Wales Police double Olympic gold medal-winning rower Tom James and former Prime Minister David Lloyd George among those honoured with the Freedom of the County Borough. The sailors will arrive onto Llwyn Isaf green (outside the Guildhall) at 10.40am, before marching through the city centre. The ship is the first since the Second World War to be affiliated with Wrexham, and the partnership was sealed at a ceremony in Portsmouth back in April 2024. TOP STORIES TODAY The ship is one of the Royal Navy's advanced Type 45 air defence destroyers, and is instantly recognisable with her roaring Welsh Dragons emblazoned across her bows. North Wales Police have warned that there will likely be 'disruption' to parking in the city centre during the event on Friday. There will be a small number of road closures for a short period as a result, and access into and out of the Library and Waterworld car parks will be limited. Further details including timings and locations will be published later this week.

Wrexham's Phil Parkinson looks set to be given Freedom of County Borough following team's promotion

Wrexham Football Club Manager Phil Parkinson looks set to be granted Freedom of the County Borough. At a meeting on Tuesday, councillors sitting on the Executive Board agreed his outstanding leadership and the back-to-back-to-back promotion to the Championship should be recognised. Wrexham's Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2022. Final say will be down to Wrexham's Full Council when they meet at a later date. The authority's Leader Mark Pritchard submitted the report saying 'It's fantastic what the manager and the team and football club have achieved'. The team will play in the Championship next season and are currently on holiday in Las Vegas before embarking on a pre-season a tour of Australia. They secured their place to the second tier of professional football after their 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic at SToK Racecourse on Saturday 26 April. Since McElhenney and Reynolds's takeover in February 2021, Wrexham earned its second promotion to League One last year, after winning a place in League Two in 2023. They have also contributed to worldwide attention for the team through their FX documentary show Welcome To Wrexham – which has run for three series and earned eight Emmys. A fourth season is set to air next month. The football club has seen recent royal visits from the Prince of Wales and the King and Queen, and actors including Wolverine star Hugh Jackman. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator McElhenney and Reynolds were honoured in 2022 by the Welsh Government, the Football Association of Wales and S4C for promoting the country and its language with the Dragon Award.
