Amazon Prime Video features, shows, price, devices, and how to avoid ads: your complete guide
Along with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video is one of the longest-running video streaming services available, but for many, it remains a bit of an enigma. Tied into the retail behemoth's Prime subscription service and having been known by several slightly different names throughout its life (at the time of writing, Amazon is very keen that we refer to it simply as 'Prime Video' rather than 'Amazon Prime Video' – go figure), it's never enjoyed the ubiquity of Netflix or the strong brand appeal of Disney+. So what exactly is Prime Video? What does it offer? How can I watch it? What does it cost? Is it worth it? What are the Prime Video features? You'll find the answers to all these questions – and more – in this article. Read more: The best things to watch on Amazon Prime Video and Freevee What does Prime Video offer? Prime Video features an ever-changing roster of films and television shows, which subscribers are able to stream on-demand through a variety of devices (see below for more details on these). Included in this are 'Amazon Originals' – content produced by Amazon Studios and MGM Holdings, or licensed to Amazon separately and generally available exclusively through Prime Video. At the time of writing, Amazon Originals include Rings of Power, Clarkson's Farm, Sound of Metal, Spencer, Reacher, The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, All or Nothing, The Boys, The Expanse, American Gods and The Grand Tour. It also currently has all the James Bond films, including the most recent entry No Time to Die, on its roster: the first time they've all been available on a single platform, no less. You can find our picks of the best Prime Video content in the following articles: Content on Prime Video is offered in HD or 4K Ultra HD where available; unlike Netflix or Now, watching in a higher resolution isn't locked to your subscription level. In general (and unless you've set it up otherwise, perhaps to save bandwidth) Prime Video will play the highest resolution version of a show or film your hardware can support. HDR content is also supported where available, with HDR10+ and occasionally Dolby Vision available. Sound quality goes up to Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Atmos. You can also rent and buy additional video content through Prime Video, whether you subscribe to the service or not. What about the additional channels? Unlike most streaming services, Prime Video lets you add extra channels to your subscription. Most come with a free trial (lasting between 7 and 30 days) and then incur an extra cost, taken monthly and billed to your Amazon account. Most cost around $5 / £5 a month. This isn't a full list, but at present some of the available channels are: StarzPlay (TV shows and movies) Shudder (horror) MUBI (films, with a focus on indie, international and arthouse cinema) Curzon (films) Hayu (reality TV shows) Acorn TV (crime TV shows) BFI Player (films, with a focus on indie, international and arthouse cinema) Britbox (classic and new British TV shows) Discovery Plus (factual programming) ITV Hub+ (ITV shows without ads) Note that almost all of these channels are available separately (i.e. you don't need to be a Prime Video subscriber to access MUBI or BFI Player – they're available to subscribe to totally outside of Amazon). Having them available from within Prime Video is more of a convenience benefit than anything else. Amazon also offers a free ad-supported service called Amazon Freevee (previously IMDb TV), which is available to watch through the Prime Video website and apps. For a cost-free platform (it's free even if you don't subscribe to Prime Video) Freevee offers some high-quality films and TV shows rather than piles of dross. At the time of writing you can stream highly rated series including Bosch, The Shield and Community, and movies including Punch-Drunk Love, Donnie Darko and Ring. How can I watch Prime Video? You can watch Prime Video and its related channels through your computer's web browser here, but it's also supported by a multitude of other devices including: Amazon FireTV and FireTV Stick Amazon Fire tablets Android and iOS phones and tablets Google Chromecast Roku streaming devices Apple TV devices LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony smart TVs BT TV Box Sky Q box TalkTalk TV box Virgin Media Tivo 4 and 6 Series boxes Nvidia Shield Sony PS3, PS4 and PS5 Microsoft Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X How much does Prime Video cost? If you opt for a month-to-month subscription, Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 / £8.99 a month, although you can also subscribe annually for a cost of $139 / £95 (which works out to just $11.58 / £7.91 a month). Of course, Prime membership comes with a lot more than just Prime Video: you also get free next-day deliveries for many Amazon purchases, Amazon Music, Amazon First Reads, Prime Gaming, Prime Reading, Prime Wardrobe, Deliveroo Plus and access to special deals. Phew. If, for whatever reason, you just want the streaming and the rest can go hang, you can subscribe solely to Prime Video for $8.99 /£5.99 a month. More recently, Amazon added a $2.99 / £2.99 fee on top of your subscription price to remove ads and play content in Dolby Vision HDR with Dolby Atmos surround sound. As stated above, the additional Prime Video Channels differ in price and most have a free trial period too. Lastly, Amazon Freevee (formerly known as IMDb TV) is available free-of-charge, with the downside being you'll have to sit through commercials. Freevee has a 'limited ad load', meaning you can expect to see a similar number of ads as you would on a commercial terrestrial channel. Other Prime Video features: does it have user profiles and parental controls? As with most streaming services, Prime Video allows you to set up multiple profiles within one account. These are ideal if you have several household members who all like watching different sorts of material, as it won't mean one account's automated recommendations being 'polluted' by the viewing history of another's. You can set up to six profiles on a single account, either as adult or kid's profiles. The latter offer a more child-friendly set of films and shows. In terms of simultaneous streaming on different devices, one Prime Video account allows for three films or shows to be watched at once. Prime Video also offers a PIN-based parental control system. After setting up a four-digit PIN, you can filter content by its age restrictions (U, PG, 12, 15 and 18 – the system allows you to set the filter at any of these levels) as well as ensure that any content purchases made through Prime Video require a PIN entry. Note that if you're using a Fire TV or Xbox device to watch Prime Video, parental restrictions must be set up separately on them. For all other devices, setting up restriction on one device will by default apply the same restrictions to any other devices on which you watch Prime Video.

Amazon Prime ends 10 TV shows in major cull of hit content
Amazon Prime Video is saying goodbye to not one, not two, but 10 long and short-lived shows in a huge shake-up of its content. There are a variety of reasons this slate of TV shows is coming to an end, whether they have reached their natural conclusion, are a victim of Freevee shutting down or received poor ratings. The slew of show closures kicked off at the beginning of this year with New York-based comedy Harlem – praised for its portrayal of modern Black womanhood – dropping its third and final season. The show's creator Tracy Oliver was forced to 'scrap' original plans after finding out it was unlikely to get another renewal and ultimately made sure the characters got a 'satisfying', if not premature, ending. Following hot on its heels with another major show touted as a fan-favourite is The Summer I Turned Pretty, which will release its third and final season in July. It will not return for a fourth outing. The popular young adult romance series is based on a trilogy by Jenny Han, who is also a showrunner on the adaptation. The plot follows the love triangle between our protagonist Belly, and brothers Jeremiah and Conrad 'over one perfect summer'. Jenny has always made clear that there would be a season per book so fans have been anticipating the bittersweet end. Next, although Priyanka Chopra's spy series Citadel will come back for season two next year, the spin-off shows Honey Bunny and Diana have no such luck. Prime Video broke the news in April, reassuring fans that the plotlines would instead be incorporated into the main show to make it the 'most exhilarating' chapter yet. So, for any concerned fans, it won't be the last we see of these storylines despite the cancellations. Rolling in next, we have Filipino-American drama Almost Paradise which arrived on Amazon for its second season. Unfortunately, it is now collateral damage as Amazon winds down its Freevee service to simplify its streaming. But for fans hoping to see more of Ex-DEA agent Alex Walker (Christian Kane) there is hope yet after executive producer Dean Devlin told TV Insider that they are 'looking for a new home'. 'At some point, Almost Paradise will be back. I just don't know when,' he promised. In another shock turn of events, Amazon Prime's adaptation of Naomi Alderman's 2016 sci-fi novel The Power, starring Toni Colette, has been canned. The show, which follows a world in which teenage girls are suddenly given the power to electrocute people, was quietly put to rest earlier this year after only nine episodes. Elsewhere, Amazon's 90s reboot of Cruel Intentions proved to be not quite the success they were hoping for. The revival, starring Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess, failed to make a splash with viewership or critical reviews, petering out into an almost inevitable axe. Finally, we have a trio of ill-fated comedies. First up is The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, following the antics of an immigrant family and starring British comedian Sindhu Vee and Lost's Naveen Andrews. Unfortunately, the Freevee shuffle-up which has hit many of the smaller shows much harder meant this hasn't been given the second series order. In much the same vein, the sitcom Clean Slate, which featured late TV star Norman Lear in his final project, will also not be returning. The show, starring Laverne Cox, follows an Alabama car wash owner rebuilding their relationship with their adult trans daughter. In a statement, Laverene as well as co-creators George Wallace and Dan Ewen said it was a 'labour of love' and a 'seven-year effort' that 'was gone in a puff of server exhaust.' More Trending And finally, we have The Sticky – a six-episode heist comedy series guest starring Jamie Lee Curtis. The intriguing Canadian series was based on a true crime story of a real-life 2012 heist where more than $18 million worth of maple syrup was stolen from Quebec's national reserves. But for every cancellation, there is also plenty of new and returning content. This year certified Prime Video hit Clarkson's Farm will be coming back for another round. View More » There is also the adaptation of the bestselling novel We Were Liars to look forward to in June. And who can forget the second season of delightful period drama Maxton Hall set to come out at the end of this year. Got a story? 3 free underrated sci-fi movies on Amazon you should watch in May 2025
Table of Contents Table of Contents Dark Skies (2013) Leviathan (1989) The Mandela Effect (2019) The only thing better than a great sci-fi movie is one you can stream for free, without a subscription. These three underrated sci-fi movies on Amazon Prime Video are free and can be streamed this month. Previously, Amazon had these titles under its Freevee umbrella. But with the Freevee brand now gone, you can find these free films tagged as 'watch for free.' If you're looking for something in the sci-fi genre you can watch without paying (but with ads), you don't even need to dig through the offerings, because we have highlighted three great titles for you right here. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Dark Skies (2013) Produced by Blumhouse Productions, the production company behind some of the best horror movies, including films like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, and Get Out, Dark Skies is about a typical suburban nuclear family that starts to experience strange events in their home. The kitchen is weirdly rearranged overnight. The house alarm goes off, indicating a breach at every single entrance. One day, hundreds of birds crash into the house. Once odd things start happening to the family members, mother Lacy (Keri Russell) does some research and thinks it might have something to do with aliens. Also starring Josh Hamilton (The Walking Dead) and J.K. Simmons (Red One), Dark Skies is suspenseful and intriguing, even if the plot gets lost at times. Stream Dark Skies on Amazon Prime Video. Leviathan (1989) Drawing comparisons to Alien and The Thing, Leviathan might be a copycat-type movie, but it's worth watching for those who love movies that blend sci-fi with horror. Counted among the cast are Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Daniel Stern (Home Alone), and the story centers around an undersea mining operation that goes wrong when they come across a Soviet shipwreck called Leviathan. A great claustrophobic thriller, Leviathan has gruesome, scary, and even funny moments to keep you entertained all the way through. Stream Leviathan on Amazon Prime Video. The Mandela Effect (2019) The psychological phenomenon known as the Mandela Effect has bubbled to the surface of late thanks to Charlie Brooker's clever toying with viewers in the Black Mirror season seven episode Bête Noire. Two versions of the episode were released with different versions of a company logo, one showing 'Barnie's' and one showing 'Bernie's.' This concept of questioning reality is central to the plot in the 2019 movie The Mandela Effect, whereby grieving father Brendan (Charlie Hofheimer) swears he remembers events and facts differently from what others insist they were or appear to be today. Brendan starts to believe that he is shifting through parallel universes. From there, he becomes obsessed with the idea that maybe in one of these alternate worlds, his daughter Sam (Madeline McGraw) is still alive. Stream The Mandela Effect on Amazon Prime Video.

Netflix's American Primeval fans must watch 'criminally underrated' Western series climbing top 10
Fans of the Netflix series American Primeval may find their next obsession in the previously overlooked Western series Hell on Wheels. Initially airing on AMC in 2011, the show has been described as "criminally underrated" by Movieweb and has recently become available to stream. The series is set in 1865 and follows former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, played by Anson Mount, as he seeks revenge during the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. With a turbulent review history, the show concluded on a high note with a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes for its final season. Critics have praised Mount's performance, with Rob Lowman of the Los Angeles Daily News calling him "the epitome of a Western star" for bringing a range of emotions and conflicts to the character. Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon The series also stars Colm Meaney and Dominique McElligott, and explores the lives of those who lived, worked, and died in the mobile encampment, "Hell on Wheels", that followed the railhead west across the Great Plains. After gaining a small cult following during its initial run, the show has attracted more attention since becoming available on Freevee, where it has entered the platform's top 10. The narrative primarily revolves around Cullen, who initially joins the railroad to hunt down Union soldiers responsible for the murder of his wife and young son during the American Civil War. Hell on Wheels aired for five seasons As the story progresses, he rises through the ranks to become a foreman and ultimately the chief engineer on the railroad. Season one began in 1865, shortly after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Season two covered 1866, while seasons three and four opened in 1867, and season five carried the series into 1869. The series can be streamed on Freevee, Amazon's free streaming service, reports the Mirror US . The Freevee app is compatible with various devices and is accessible on most Smart TVs. Almost Paradise Cancelled After 2 Seasons
Paradise can't last forever, it seems: The tropical action drama Almost Paradise has been cancelled after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. 'We're looking for a new home,' executive producer Dean Devlin tells TV Insider. 'I've never had a show that was this successful and yet couldn't stay at the same place more than one season.' Almost Paradise debuted on WGN America back in 2020 and then moved to Amazon Freevee for Season 2, which aired in July 2023. A source tells TVLine that when Freevee was scrapped last year, Almost Paradise became a casualty. More from TVLine Power Rangers Update: Percy Jackson Bosses in Talks to Pen a Live-Action Series for Disney+ The Sex Lives of College Girls Cancelled at Max After 3 Seasons - Could It Be Saved? Cruel Intentions Cancelled at Prime Video After 1 Season Devlin isn't ready to say goodbye yet, though: 'As you can tell from Leverage: Redemption, I don't give up. So at some point, Almost Paradise will be back. I just don't know when.' Devlin also exec-produced the long-running TNT procedural Leverage, which was revived by Freevee as Leverage: Redemption in 2021. Almost Paradise starred Christian Kane — who also co-starred on Leverage — as Alex Walker, a former U.S. DEA agent who, after his partner's betrayal and a life-threatening battle with hypertension, is forced into early retirement and relocates to a small tropical island in the Philippines. There, he's pulled back into a world of dangerous people and deadly situations, either through his friends in the local police — Kai Mendoza (played by Samantha Richelle) and Ernesto Alamares (Art Acuña) — or running into people from his old life. Devlin and Gary Rosen (The Librarians) co-created the series and served as co-showrunners. Kane still stars on Leverage: Redemption (Season 3 premieres Thursday, Apr. 17) and is set to reprise his role as Jacob Stone in The Librarians: The Next Chapter (coming soon to TNT).
