Here's how much senators are making from their side hustles

Being a senator can be a demanding job. But many of them still find the time do things on the side that help earn them an extra buck. From book sales to part-time jobs, it's all laid out in the financial disclosures that members of Congress are required to file every year. Roughly half of senators filed those documents by the May 15 deadline, while the rest have requested an extension until August. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania nearly doubled his income in 2024, bringing in a $172,500 advance payment from Penguin Random House for a forthcoming book. According to Semafor, the book is called "Unfettered" and will be co-written with Buzz Bissinger, the author of Friday Night Lights. Fetterman's not the only one with a forthcoming book. Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina is set to release his fifth book, entitled "One Nation Always Under God," in August, according to his disclosure. A description from HarperCollins says the book is about "how Christian values forged our legal system, educational institutions, healthcare, social services, and more." Scott received $85,000 from the publisher in 2024. Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, meanwhile, has a second job on the side: He's still serving as a senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, drawing a $31,800 salary in 2024. That second job has kept him busy. He took 15 different paid trips, including to London and the US Virgin Islands, as part of his role as a pastor in 2024. He also delivered eight paid speeches in connection with that, donating the combined $15,000 in compensation to charity. He made over $150,700 in book royalties, which comes on top of a combined $1.1 million from books in 2023 and 2022. Spokespeople for Fetterman, Scott, and Warnock did not respond to requests for comment. All of this is ethically permissible. Lawmakers were permitted to make up to $32,000 in outside income in 2024, and there's no limit on how much they can earn from book sales. Many of the US Senate's most prominent members have taken advantage of that, raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars year after year. Among them are Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who made $148,750 in book royalties in 2024, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who has historically made lots of money from books but brought in just $27,900 last year. In 2023, eight senators made more than $100,000 from books, while six of them made more than their annual salary of $174,000 in 2022. Second jobs are less common, but Warnock's not the only one. Last year, former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema made about $29,900 from teaching at Arizona State University, while now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio made about $20,800 as an adjunct professor at Florida International University.

Amazon Prime Video' Best New Show Lands A Perfect 100% Critic Score

Overcompensating Amazon While there are a number of solid shows on right now, probably an infinite amount you'll never get to, there's at least one new series on Amazon Prime Video that seems to be worth checking out, which just released today. That show is Overcompensating, and now with at least some critic reviews in, it has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series focuses on teens in a less-dark-than-Euphoria way and more like R-rated comedies of old. Here's the synopsis of the new series: Interestingly, the show was created by its star, Benito Skinner, something you don't see every day. He's 31 and apparently playing much younger in this. This cast is…something else. Very impressive. While I don't recognize any of the leads, two of its recurring characters are Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights and Kyle MacLachlan of Twin Peaks. I also see Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford and star of Bottoms. Also Maddie Phillips from Gen V and the sadly cancelled teenage bounty hunters. Overcompensating Amazon But what really catches my eye is the apparent list of guest stars for the show, which is only eight episodes, but it is allegedly going to fit in Charli XCX, Megan Fox, Lukas Gage, Bowen Yang and James Van Der Beek. What is this show? I'm certainly going to be checking it out. That's for sure. Here's what some of the critics are saying about it: In all these summaries the worst criticism I can find is that it's sometimes 'over-the-top,' but there are certainly worse things you could say about a series. Amazon is releasing this as a rare binge drop, and since it came out today, it's too early to place on the Amazon Top 10 shows list, currently dominated by the months-old Reacher in a flex of that series' power, no pun intended. But I'm certainly going to be watching Overcompensating this weekend. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Amber Heard Opens Up About Expanding Her Family as a Single Mom After Welcoming Twins

Amber Heard revealed that she'd expanded her family as she announced she'd welcomed twins in a May 11 post for Mother's Day. The 'Aquaman' actress opened up about the "humbling" experience of becoming a parent as a single mom, as well as navigating "fertility challenges." Heard previously welcomed her eldest daughter Oonagh via surrogate in April Day was an extra-special celebration for Amber Heard this year. The Friday Night Lights actress surprised fans on Sunday when she revealed that she'd expanded her family with twins, officially making her a mom of three. Heard, who welcomed her eldest daughter Oonagh via surrogate in April 2021, shared the names of her babies as she opened up about 'the completion of the family [she'd] strived to build for years.' The 'Heard gang' gained two new members this year, as the single mom announced, 'my daughter Agnes and my son Ocean are keeping my hands (and my heart) full,' in an Instagram post shared on May 11. Heard's spokesperson also confirmed the news to People, telling the publication, 'Mama and babies are enjoying every minute. And Oonagh is happily running the show.' Sharing a photo of her newborn twins' feet, Heard—who moved to Madrid, Spain in 2022 after her highly-publicized legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp—revealed that she was 'bursting' with joy as she reflected on being a single mom 'on her own terms,' despite her fertility issues. 'Becoming a mother by myself and on my own terms despite my own fertility challenges has been the most humbling experience of my life,' she wrote. Heard, who did not name the father of her twins, continued, 'I am eternally grateful that I was able to choose this responsibly and thoughtfully.' The Aquaman actress closed out her message with a shoutout to other moms, writing, 'To all the moms, wherever you are today and however you got here, my dream family and I are celebrating with you. Love always.' Heard, who was most recently romantically linked to Bianca Butti since her 2017 divorce, previously called becoming a mom 'the beginning of the rest of my life' when she welcomed Oonagh. 'Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms,' she wrote in a July 2021 Instagram post. 'I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way. I hope we arrive at a point in which it's normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib.' Read the original article on InStyle
