Huge 90s film star unrecognisable as she gets ready to star in movie with Nicola Peltz – but can you guess who it is?

SHE was one of the biggest stars of the '90s in iconic blockbusters - but can you guess who it is? The Hollywood actress looked completely unrecognisable in new snaps as she gears up to star in an upcoming movie alongside Nicola Peltz. It's Mary Stuart Masterson — best known for her breakout roles in Fried Green Tomatoes and Benny & Joon. The 59-year-old actress has swapped her girl-next-door '90s look for a more low-key, natural appearance as she returns to the spotlight for a film with Nicola Peltz. Mary shot to fame in the late '80s and early '90s, winning hearts in cult classics like Some Kind of Wonderful, Fried Green Tomatoes, Bad Girls and Benny & Joon. Her emotional depth and girl-next-door charm made her a standout, with Fried Green Tomatoes grossing over $119 million worldwide and earning two Oscar nominations. Fans still remember her as the drum-playing tomboy Watts and the quietly fierce Idgie Threadgoode — characters that left a lasting mark on cinema lovers. Since her blockbuster heyday, Mary shifted focus to TV roles, directing, and theatre, even founding her own film production company. She's also a fierce advocate for mental health and arts education, balancing her off-screen passions with a slow but steady return to Hollywood. Mary recently joined the cast of the indie drama Rain Reign, starring alongside Paul Rudd. Her latest screen appearances include roles in Five Nights at Freddy's and The Senior. Mary will now appear alongside Nicola Peltz, 30, in the new thriller Pretty Ugly. It is a dramatic thriller written and directed by multiple DGA Award nominee Erica Dunton (Ted Lasso). The film, set in North Carolina, centres on a mother and daughter. The synopsis reveals how their relationship "unravels" with the return of a "provocative makeup influencer," played by Nicola, amid a murder in the area. Mary stars as the mother of Raelynn (De Lisser), a young woman caught up in the glossy world of social media beauty. Her character is equally hooked — but on grisly true crime podcasts. Their bond is put to the test when a bold makeup influencer (Nicola Peltz) returns from LA to their quiet town of Winnabow, triggering a dark spiral involving murder, obsession, and a warped take on the American Dream. Sharing the news, actress Mary wrote on Instagram: "I'm slow to post these things, but I am so proud to be a part of this film. "I had a (rather intense) ball down in Wilmington, NC with the most amazing crew and cast under the truly inspiring direction of Erica Dunton." Continuing, she said: "I will have more to say and share about this magical experience later on… you are not going to believe what my movie daughter [Jazzy] and her new friend [Nicola] get up to…" Revealing her excitement, Nicola replied: "Mary you're so incredible I'm so excited for this." Nicola's last movie was Lola (2024), which she also wrote and directed. As the actress enjoys her happy news, tensions within the Beckham clan have been simmering. Brooklyn recently broke his silence amid ongoing family drama, wishing sister Harper a happy birthday just days after being caught in a so-called 'WW3' rift involving his brothers Romeo and Cruz. The feud reportedly boiled over after Romeo blocked both Brooklyn and Nicola on Instagram, blindsiding the couple during their holiday. Sources close to The Sun said: 'They had no idea until they saw it online.' The Beckham Family Feud April 2022: Brooklyn marries Nicola Peltz. Wedding Dress Controversy: Rumours begin circulating that there's tension between Nicola and Victoria Beckham after Nicola chooses not to wear a Victoria Beckham -designed wedding gown. Nicola later clarifies in August 2022 (and again in March 2023) that Victoria's atelier couldn't make the dress in time, but reports in May 2025 suggest Victoria actually changed her mind about making the dress. Post-Wedding (2022 onwards): Minimal interaction between Nicola and Victoria on social media, and noticeable absence of Nicola at key Beckham family events. Alleged Wedding "Hijack": In May 2025, a source claimed Victoria "ruined" part of the wedding by allegedly hijacking a dance with Marc Anthony, which was meant for Brooklyn and Nicola. Nicola reportedly ran from the room crying. March 2025: A resurfaced TikTok of Romeo and Cruz mimicking a "baby voice" (which fans associate with Nicola) sparks speculation of sibling shade. April 2025: Brooklyn and Nicola are reportedly absent from Victoria Beckham's 51st birthday celebrations in Miami and her Paris Fashion Week show. May 2025: David Beckham's 50th Birthday Snub: Brooklyn and Nicola are notably absent from David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations in London, despite being invited. Reports suggest their absence was due to Brooklyn not wanting to be in the same room as Kim Turnbull, the girlfriend of Romeo who had previously been reported to have been dating Brooklyn, who David allegedly opted to have at the party over Nicola. Rumours emerge of a falling out between Brooklyn and his younger brother Romeo, reportedly due to Romeo's new girlfriend, DJ Kim Turnbull, who allegedly had a past connection with Brooklyn. Reports surface that the Beckham parents are "hurt and disappointed" that Brooklyn is "playing no part in family life." Sources claim that tensions between Brooklyn and Nicola and his parents are "definitely not beyond repair." June 2025: Brooklyn and Nicola reportedly enlist a "crisis team" similar to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for "reputation management" due to the growing media scrutiny. Cruz Beckham posts cryptic lyrics on Instagram that some interpret as a swipe at Brooklyn. July 2025: Reports indicate David and Victoria are "desperate" to reconcile with Brooklyn. Brooklyn publicly wishes his sister Harper a happy 14th birthday on Instagram, tagging Nicola, which is seen as a potential "olive branch" and a rare public message to his family amid the rumored rift. Brooklyn UNFOLLOWS his brothers Romeo and Cruz just 24 hours after his birthday message to Harper. Nicola quickly follows suit and also ditches the Beckham bros from her Instagram following. Romeo and Cruz are now also no longer following Brooklyn. The situation quickly escalated into a full-blown social media saga. Romeo even posting a cryptic message about "walking away" which many interpreted as a dig at his older brother. Initial reports claimed Brooklyn and Nicola had unfollowed his siblings first, but insiders told The Sun that wasn't the case. A friend said: 'Brooklyn had no idea about any of this until he read about it online. 'It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as no longer following the brothers. 'They certainly didn't unfollow them or block them - they're as confused as anyone else. 'The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on.' 6 6 6 6

Nicola Peltz Beckham to star in dramatic new thriller with star-studded cast

Nicola Peltz Beckham, Jazzy De Lisser and Mary Stuart Masterson have began filming a dramatic thriller penned and directed by multiple DGA Award nominee Erica Dunton. Nicola Peltz Beckham is part of a new star-studded cast for a dramatic thriller. Pretty Ugly is penned and helmed by Erica Dunton, a contender for multiple DGA Awards and known for her work on Ted Lasso. ‌ The 30-year-old will star alongside Jazzy De Lisser (Too Much), and Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes). Pretty Ugly delves into the life of Raelynn (De Lisser), a young woman entranced by the allure of social media beauty, alongside her mum who shares an obsession with true crime podcasts. ‌ Their bond starts to fray when a challenging makeup influencer (Nicola Peltz) makes her way back to Winnabow from LA, leading to a confrontation with a murder and a deeper understanding of the American Dream for all three women. ‌ The film has been described by Erica as "a movie for this moment, a character-driven murder mystery that highlights the depths to which the internet is changing the face of every town in America." The cast is completed by Michelle Gomez, Andy Buckley, Cullen Moss, Paul Schneider, Edgar de Santiago, and Angela Wong Carbone, reports Deadline. The production team includes Will McCance and Dunton as producers, with Beckham taking on an executive producer role for Bunny Films, joined by De Lisser, and Matthew Petersen and Gill Holland serving as co-producers. Recently making her directorial debut with Lola, Nicola-Peltz Beckham has featured in projects such as Welcome to Chippendales, Holidate, Bates Motel, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. She is represented by Gersh, Will McCance, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman. Meanwhile, Dunton has directed episodes of numerous notable contemporary series, including Ted Lasso, The Waterfront, We Were Liars, Outer Banks, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. She received two DGA Award nominations for her work on Ted Lasso, as well as Sundance's Best of Next! Audience Award for her 2011 feature which starred De Lisser. Elsewhere, the Beckham feud among the family appears to be grumbling on. There's been ongoing tensions among the star-studded family with Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz notably absent from Sir David's 50th birthday bash earlier this year. ‌ It was this which was said to have sparked a very public rift within the clan. The concerns have risen to the surface after several pointed comments from Nicola about family dynamics during her own dads birthday celebrations. Displaying her Pop Mart dolls arranged in formation to followers, she penned: "our little family", alongside a second telling image captioned: "My mom just gets it." She subsequently shared a photograph embracing her father, adding: "I love you so much dad." ‌ Speculation over tensions between the Beckhams and Nicola have been swirling since Brooklyn and Nicola's lavish Florida wedding in 2022. Despite the million-dollar event appearing as the pinnacle of romance, glamour, and family unity in polished photos, the reality behind the scenes was reportedly quite different. Nicola was said to be left seething by mother-in-law Victoria's behaviour during her wedding day, where it's claimed she attempted to upstage the bride. Reports suggest that Victoria Beckham caused a stir by selecting the same song that Nicola had chosen for her first dance with Brooklyn to use for her own mother-son dance. Meanwhile, Nicola shunned the opportunity to wear a dress from Victoria's fashion label on her big day. Detailing the events, Nicola said: "Well, I was planning on wearing Victoria's wedding dress," and "I was truly so excited to be able to wear a design that my future mother-in-law created. We connected to start designing the dress, and then a few days went by and I didn't hear anything. Victoria called my mom and said her atelier couldn't make it."
