Red Sox reactions: ‘The leader' Garrett Crochet hurls complete game shutout
BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on Saturday: 1) Boston has won nine straight games to improve to 52-45. The Rays dropped to 50-46. 2) During his pregame media availability, manager Alex Cora referred to ace Garrett Crochet as 'the leader.' Crochet pitched his first career complete game — and it was a complete game shutout. He allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out nine. Crochet has pitched 8 innings or more three times this season. He has pitched 7 innings or more 9 times. 'What he's doing in the clubhouse. You see him in the dugout. He's always into games, talking to pitchers,' Cora said. 'Yesterday, (Greg) Weissert came out. He didn't like the slider. They were talking about grips and all that. He's very similar to Alex (Bregman) in that sense.' Cora said Crochet assumed the responsibility of being a leader when he signed a six-year, $170 million contract extension at the beginning of the season. 'You have to be that guy,' Cora said. 'And we haven't had a guy like that in a while. We've had some good ones throughout the years. Now that he's the ace of the Red Sox, he's doing an amazing job.'" 3) The Rays attempted a suicide squeeze with with runners at the corners and one out in the sixth inning. Ha-Seong Kim laid down a bunt to the right side of the infield. First baseman Abraham Toro charged in to field it with his bare hand and threw out Taylor Walls at home. The Rays challenged but the call was upheld. 4) The Red Sox needed Crochet to go deep into the game after starter Hunter Dobbins left Saturday in the second inning because of an ACL tear. 5) The Fenway Park crowd erupted as Crochet jogged back out of the dugout at 93 pitches for the ninth inning. 6) Rookie Roman Anthony's hustle on a hit to right field 1(03.4 mph off his bat) allowed him to turn a single into a double. He scored to make it 1-0 when Carlos Narváez, the next hitter, singled to left-center field. 7) The Red Sox will host the Rays for the final game before the All-Star break on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Righty Brayan Bello (5-3, 3.27 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Rays righty Ryan Pepiot (6-6, 3.32 ERA). Cubs President Gives Three-Word Response Regarding Prospects
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are in prime position to make a run to the World Series for the first time since 2016. Chicago entered Friday 57-39, good for the second-best record in the National League and third best in all of baseball. The excellent start to the season means the Cubs will be buyers at this season's trade deadline. With that comes the loss of prospects. Team president Jed Hoyer was asked about the possibility of holding onto any key prospects and his response to that was rather short. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - OCTOBER 01: Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer speaks to the media during a press conference at Wrigley Field on October 01, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - OCTOBER 01: Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer speaks to the media during a press conference at Wrigley Field on October 01, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois."No one's untouchable," Hoyer told reporters in a video posted to X by Marquee Sports Network. "At the same time though, we have really great prospects, and we'd have to feel like we're getting great value." Chicago indeed does have great prospects, as it has five on MLB's top 100 prospect list. Those five are No. 41 Owen Caissie, No. 51 Moises Ballesteros, No. 62 Jefferson Rojas, No. 84 Kevin Alcantara and No. 100 Jaxon was the most recent addition to the list, as he was added on Tuesday. After the graduation of Matt Shaw from the Cubs prospect list, Caissie is now the top prospect in the organization and it's for good reason. He is showing out at Triple-A with a .278 average, 19 home runs, 20 doubles, 42 RBIs and a .961 OPS. Combine those stats with his performance in the 2023 World Baseball Classic with Team Canada and you have an outstanding, young outfielder. Owen Caissie carries the momentum from his hot season into the Futures Game! The @Cubs' No. 1 prospect, who has a .961 OPS at Triple-A, laces an RBI double for the National League. Watch LIVE: — MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) July 12, 2025 Ballesteros and Alcantara have both reached the major leagues in their young careers, Rojas has yet to appear in Double-A and Wiggins is currently in Double-A. Whether it is Caissie or any of the other prospects listed above, Chicago's front office will certainly have a tough pill to swallow when deciding which of its top prospects to include in trades. Tigers top prospects promoted: Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark, Josue Briceño to Double-A Erie
Here comes the future. First stop, Erie. Later this week, the Futures Game. Detroit Tigers prospects Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark and Josue Briceño have been promoted from High-A West Michigan to Double A Erie. They are expected to make their Erie debut at Harrisburg on Tuesday, July 8. Advertisement Then, the spotlight will only get brighter for this talented trio. All three have been selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game on Saturday, July 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta, a showcase of the top prospects in baseball. Detroit Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle practices during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland on Friday, Feb. 20, 2025. McGonigle, Clark and Briceño are the Tigers top-three prospects who are healthy, considering shortstop Bryce Rainer underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in June. McGonigle, a 20-year-old shortstop, is ranked the No. 7 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He hit .372 with a 1.110 OPS in 36 games at West Michigan. Said MLB Pipeline: 'McGonigle might have the best hit tool in the minors and has been a double machine when healthy this season.' Advertisement INSIDER: One story about Kevin McGonigle sheds insight into why he's different 'He's really good at baseball,' Whitecaps manager Tony Cappuccilli told the Free Press on June 14. 'I mean, he's a special player. He makes everybody around him better. He just plays the game the right way. He knows where to be and wants to be coached. If he does something wrong and had another option, then he wants to hear it. He wants to get better. It's not just show up and throw the glove on and strap on the batting gloves — he wants to be coached. He wants to learn and he wants to know if he had other options in different situations throughout the game. So, he's invested in becoming a great player and playing for a long time.' Detroit Tigers prospect Max Clark gets ready for practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025. Clark, 20, is ranked the No. 12 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He went through a slump earlier this season, but he is hitting .285 with a .430 on base percentage at West Michigan. Advertisement 'He's played incredible center field for us,' Cappuccilli said. 'So just he's definitely grown in terms of how he handles success and failure.' INSIDER: Max Clark shows maturity, growth dealing with 'failure moments' Briceño, 20, is ranked No. 58 by MLB Pipeline. He has jacked 15 homers with a .296 batting average in 55 games for the Whitecaps. Detroit Tigers prospect Josue Briceño bats at practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland on Friday, Feb. 20, 2025. While Briceño has showed impressive power, it has been his defense at catcher that has been the most pleasant surprise. 'He wants to be a catcher,' Cappuccilli told the Free Press. 'He walks around like a catcher. He carries himself like a catcher.' Advertisement He has improved his receiving and his throwing has impressed Cappuccilli. 'It's really been a pleasant surprise,' Cappuccilli said. 'You see him getting more and more comfortable. He's exceeded our expectations back there, both with his desire to be back there and his improvement. The questions he asked are good questions. He's engaged in what he's doing. I mean, he carries himself like a catcher. So it's been a lot of fun.' In June, Cappuccilli was asked what it is like to coach this talented team in West Michigan. ANALYSIS: He's no All-Star (yet) but Zach McKinstry is the fuel that makes Tigers purr Advertisement "It's an incredible group of guys," Cappuccilli said. "They are great players — that's a given. People always ask, 'Oh, what's gonna happen when these guys move on to Erie?' "I know I'm gonna miss the guys. I'll miss them in the clubhouse. Obviously writing their names in the lineup is nice, but the quality of character of the guys that we have here is amazing. Not only are they getting good players, but they are good people, and they want to win. They're not happy when they lose." Contact Jeff Seidel: jseidel@ Follow him on X @seideljeff.
