Drake Baldwin's solo home run (6)

Hawaii's Kanekoa Texeira selected to MLB All-Star Futures Game staff After logging time in the major leagues as a pitcher, Maui native Kanekoa Texeira is once again climbing the professional baseball ladder, this time from the dugout. Texeira, a Kamehameha Schools graduate from Kula, Maui, is in his second season as the Triple-A manager for the Gwinnett Stripers, the Atlanta Braves' top affiliate in the International League. The former big-league reliever, who pitched 67 innings across two seasons with the Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals from 2010 to 2012, has quickly gained respect as a rising managerial talent. That reputation has earned him a new honor, a spot on the coaching staff for the 2025 All-Star Futures Game, set for July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. "Hey, you know, it's fun," Texeira said. "It's always been part of my dream to stick in this game as long as I can. Reach out to lots of kids or players that I can share in the knowledge I've learned. I still get shocked sometimes, managing a Triple-A team, one step away from the big leagues. If it happens, it happens. If not, I'm still proud of what I've done and what I'm doing right now." Texeira's selection to the Futures Game staff came via a text from Braves legend Chipper Jones. "Chipper texted me and said, 'Hey, you want to coach third base?'" Texeira recalled. "I said, 'Of course.' Then he said, 'Good, because you're going to be with me in the Futures Game.' I told him, 'I'd be stupid to say no to Chipper Jones, man. I got you.'" 2:44 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

With All-Star Week fast approaching, baseball fans are already buzzing about the 26th edition of the All-Star Futures Game. Set for July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta, this seven-inning showcase highlights the game's brightest minor-league prospects. Advertisement However, this year's matchup carries extra significance for Braves Country. On Monday, Major League Baseball confirmed that two of Atlanta's most celebrated alumni will take the reins in the dugouts. Hall of Famer Chipper Jones has been appointed manager of the National League Futures squad, while two-time All-Star Marquis Grissom will helm the American League team. The announcement was shared via MLB's official X account. Drafted first overall by the Braves in 1990, Jones spent his entire 19-year career in Atlanta. He slashed .303/.401/.529 across 2,499 games, amassing 468 home runs and 1,623 RBIs. Grissom, meanwhile, was a two-time National League stolen base leader (1991-92) and four-time consecutive Gold Glove winner (1993-96). He spent 17 seasons in the majors with six clubs, posted a .272 career batting average, swiped 429 bases, and drove in 967 runs. A two-time All-Star, Grissom also earned the 1997 ALCS MVP and played a key role in the Braves' 1995 World Series win. Astros to promote top pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh

HOUSTON — The Houston Astros will promote pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh to make his major-league debut on Wednesday afternoon in a spot start against the Detroit Tigers. Blubaugh boasts a 4.29 ERA across his first 21 Triple-A innings. He represented the Astros in the Futures Game last season. The 24-year-old right-hander finished with a 4.19 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Advertisement The Athletic's Keith Law slotted Blubaugh sixth in his preseason ranking of Houston's prospects, higher than any pitcher in the Astros' system. Blubaugh participated in major-league spring training, but is not on the team's 40-man roster, so Houston will have to create a spot prior to Wednesday's game. The Astros selected Blubaugh in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. When Blubaugh throws his first pitch on Wednesday, he will become the school's first pitcher to ever reach the major leagues. Blubaugh closed for almost all of his college career before converting into a starter upon his entrance into pro ball. Blubaugh can reach 97 mph with his four-seam fastball, but usually hovers around the low to mid-90s. Before the season, Law wrote that Blubaugh's 'probability of sticking in the rotation has gone up substantially since last offseason.' How long he sticks in Houston's major-league rotation is a mystery. Blubaugh will start on Wednesday in place of Hayden Wesneski, whom Espada said 'needs a couple more days to recover from his last start.' The velocity on all of Wesneski's pitches declined throughout that outing against the Kansas City Royals, though he still managed to throw five innings of two-run ball. Asked twice this week whether Wesneski is healthy, Espada said he is. Espada did not answer definitively whether Wesneski could return to the Astros' rotation during this weekend's series against the Chicago White Sox, only saying 'I'm going to wait to make that call.' 'I just want to make sure he plays catch, recovers well and I'll make a decision on that,' Espada said. If Wesneski is not ready to return in Chicago, the Astros could compensate by welcoming back a long-lost face. Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday morning at Daikin Park and, if all goes well, Espada hinted he could make his next start at the major-league level. McCullers has not started a major-league game since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series. He underwent flexor tendon surgery in 2023 and missed all of last season after encountering a slew of setbacks.
