Cleopatra joins Pas
KUALA LUMPUR: Social media influencer Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin, who stood as an independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat during the last general election, has submitted her application to join Pas. The Islamist party's Muslimat wing said Nur Fathiah, better known as Cleopatra among her followers, handed over her membership application form at its office here yesterday. In a Facebook post, the wing said that Cleopatra said her decision to join Pas was made for the sake of her children's future. "Apart from being known as an activist actively involved in charitable work and as the founder of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Hetero Action Women Alliance (HAWA), which champions women's and community rights, Cleopatra also plays a role as a social media influencer, making her an important voice in advocating social issues and community development." Cleopatra contested the Batu parliamentary seat as an independent in the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022, which saw a 10-cornered fight — the highest number of candidates in that election. However, she lost the contest at the seat, which was retained by incumbent P. Prabakaran of PKR. Meanwhile, Pas Muslimat chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh said the council welcomes Cleopatra's membership and encourages the participation of all women in the party. She said the wing has long been committed to caring for the welfare of the underprivileged, including the poor, persons with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers, and orphans. "Cleopatra's entry into Pas is seen as a strategic step towards strengthening the role of women in Malaysian politics and championing the well-being of society," she said.

The PAS women's wing said Nur Fathiah, better known as Cleopatra, submitted her membership application form today at the Islamic party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. The wing said Nur Fathiah, a single mother, wanted to join PAS for the sake of her children's future. 'Besides being known as an activist who does humanitarian work and founded the NGO, Hetero Action Women Alliance, she is also a social media influencer who's an important voice in championing community development and social issues,' it said in a Facebook post. Nur Fathiah was among 10 candidates who took part in the race for the hotly-contested seat of Batu during GE15. A total of four independent candidates had contested, with the remaining candidates coming from Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, Pejuang, Warisan and Parti Rakyat Malaysia. Tengku Zafrul's GE15 pledge unenforceable, says Tok Mat
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said he could not see how the GE15 pledge could be enforced against Tengku Zafrul Aziz as he did not win the seat he contested. PETALING JAYA : The review of a pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul Aziz when he was a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th general election cannot be enforced because he did not win in the election. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said Tengku Zafrul was appointed as the investment, trade and industry minister in his capacity as a senator, Bernama reported. 'This matter is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win in the election. 'That pledge is made by any elected representative as a state assemblyman or an MP. 'If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not to the individual. 'The individual who becomes a candidate and wins signs many agreements, including reimbursing the costs incurred by the party and many other things. 'Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator. So I don't see how the pledge can be enforced against him,' he told reporters after a luncheon in Seremban today. He was commenting on a statement by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, who urged the party to take stern action against Tengku Zafrul, who announced his departure from Umno to join PKR yesterday. Puad also asked the party to review the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul when he was a BN candidate in GE15. Tengku Zafrul lost in the election for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. Puad asked the party to study the possibility of demanding RM100 million in compensation if Tengku Zafrul's action is considered as party hopping. Asked whether the resignation would affect Umno, Mohamad, who is also Rembau MP, said Tengku Zafrul did not hold a high position in the party and it would not have a significant impact on Umno. Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party's legal team would review whether Tengku Zafrul had breached the agreement signed during GE15, which binds candidates to the party.

Umno must have 7 ministers with Tengku Zafrul's exit, Zahid tells Anwar
Published on: Saturday, May 31, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 31, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he will get legal advice on whether Tengku Zafrul Aziz is liable for a RM100 million fine having violated an agreement signed before the 15th general election. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the prime minister to ensure his party is restored to its quota of seven ministers in the Cabinet following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's resignation from the party. Zahid said Umno has only six ministers now, Bernama reported. 'For me, what matters more is that Umno is represented by seven ministers in the Cabinet. Although we are not sure if Tengku Zafrul's appointment was under Umno's capacity or otherwise, the assumption is that it was because he was from Umno. 'With Tengku Zafrul no longer in Umno, the party has a right to request that a minister's portfolio be given to us,' he was quoted as saying after an event in Sarawak today. Zahid also confirmed that Umno has officially received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter, which was submitted to the party's executive secretary, Sumali Reduan, earlier this morning. 'Yesterday, when we checked (after the news broke), we had not received the letter,' he said. Advertisement 'But this morning, after checking again, it was confirmed that the letter had been sent to the executive secretary.' On whether Tengku Zafrul violated any agreements signed during the 15th general election (GE15) by leaving the party, Zahid said he would consult Umno's legal advisers. He pointed out that party candidates who leave may face a RM100 million fine based on their sworn statements. 'Tengku Zafrul contested and lost, but was reappointed as a senator. So I need to check with Umno's legal advisers first,' he said. Tengku Zafrul announced yesterday that he had resigned from Umno and all party positions, and would be applying to join PKR, led by Anwar. Citing 'compatibility and suitability', Tengku Zafrul said he decided to leave Umno after seeking advice from friends within and outside the party. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Umno wants full ministerial quota after Tengku Zafrul's exit, says Ahmad Zahid
SERIAN: Umno is seeking to retain its full allocation of seven ministerial positions in the Federal Cabinet following the resignation of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz from the party, its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, expressed confidence that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would consider reinstating the allocation in line with Umno's role in the unity government. 'To me, what's more important is that Umno remains represented by seven full ministers in the Cabinet. Although we are unsure whether Tengku Zafrul's appointment was on Umno's ticket, we had assumed he represented the party. 'Now that he is no longer with Umno, the number drops to six. So, it is only fair for Umno to request that the seat be returned to us,' he told reporters after attending the Sarawak RISDA 2025 'Makmur' Smallholders programme and pre-Gawai celebration here today. Ahmad Zahid also confirmed that the party has received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter, which was submitted to Umno Executive Secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan. 'Yesterday, when we checked, it had not been received. But this morning, we verified that the letter had been delivered to Mohd Sumali. We acknowledge his resignation and withdrawal of membership from Umno,' he said. Tengku Zafrul, who is Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, had yesterday announced his resignation from Umno, including from his posts as Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief. He also disclosed his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), having informed PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh. Ahmad Zahid said Umno's legal team will review whether Tengku Zafrul has breached the agreement signed during the 15th General Election (GE15), which binds candidates to the party. 'For GE15 candidates, there is a clause in their statutory declaration that allows the party to impose a RM100 million penalty if they leave. Tengku Zafrul contested but lost, and was later appointed as a Senator. I will consult our legal advisers to examine the implications,' he said.
