Nurul Izzah and husband depart for haj pilgrimage [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Izzah Anwar and her husband, Yin Shao Loong, were given a send-off at the airport before departing for their haj pilgrimage recently. A TikTok fan page named @nurulizzah_fans shared a 30-second video showing the couple making their way to the departure gate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The clip, uploaded three days ago included a heartfelt caption praying for a blessed pilgrimage. "O Allah, make their pilgrimage a blessed and accepted one, their Sa'i a deed that You accept, and their acts of worship righteous and pleasing to You," the caption says. Nurul Izzah, recently elected as the new deputy president of PKR after defeating Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in the May 23 party elections, announced her intention to perform the pilgrimage during the PKR National Congress last month. Upon her return, she is expected to focus on strengthening internal party unity and with an eye on preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16) and the Sabah election.

Review pact with PH if PKR takes Zafrul in, says Kedah Umno

A decision by PKR to accept Tengku Zafrul Aziz could cause rifts in the coalition government, said Syed Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno has urged Barisan Nasional to review its partnership with Pakatan Harapan for the next general election (GE16) if PKR accepts Tengku Zafrul Aziz as a member. PKR would be akin to 'stealing' an Umno leader if it took in Tengku Zafrul as a member, said Kedah Umno communications director Syed Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri. He told FMT that this could then lead to fractured ties within the coalition government, similar to how Bersatu had also 'fished' for Umno leaders in the past. After the 2018 general election, in which BN lost power, a host of Umno leaders defected to Bersatu, among them Hamzah Zainudin, now Bersatu deputy president, and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, the current Wanita Bersatu chief. 'Today, it's one leader, but what will happen next? If our own allies in the government do not respect such boundaries, we should reassess our political compass in GE16,' said Syed Johan. 'Umno won't stop anyone from leaving but our allies should respect the political boundaries. If they don't respect the spirit of friendship among allies, we must be more stern in defending Umno's honour,' he said. Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member yesterday, relinquishing his posts as a member of the party's Supreme Council and the head of its Kota Raja division. The senator also said he has conveyed his intention to join PKR to its president Anwar Ibrahim, and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warned PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul as a member, saying it would cause disharmony between the government allies. Earlier, Fuziah said PKR will consider the input of its allies in the government as well as the party's own grassroots in evaluating membership applications, including that of Tengku Zafrul. However he has yet to submit his official PKR membership application. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin was unhappy with Fuziah's response, saying PKR should have decided from the outset to reject Tengku Zafrul's application.

Nurul Izzah must prove she's more than just 'Anwar's daughter'

SHAH ALAM - The outcome of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) election, which saw incumbent Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar, was anticipated from the outset. This change indirectly reflects not only an internal power shift but also the grassroots' desire for a more harmonious and less confrontational approach in the post-15th General Election (GE15) political landscape. However, with less than 30 months remaining until the 16th General Election (GE16), the success of the new leadership, now leaning towards a 'politik kasih sayang' (politics of love) approach, must be tested in its ability to unite the party machinery and regain support from young voters and the middle class. Although Nurul Izzah is seen as having a clean, progressive and inclusive image, her main challenge lies in rebuilding the grassroots structure, which has appeared weakened since PKR joined the government. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian believes the first action the party's new leadership should take is to reconcile and consolidate its ranks to face the real political opponents outside the party. He said this step is especially important ahead of GE16, which will be the real battlefield for gauging public support for the party led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'PKR must also show that the party is bigger than any individual by ensuring national political stability is maintained. Today, PKR is the ruling party alongside other coalitions under the Unity Government. 'They must also increase the level of loyalty or 'wala' to the party. Although PKR is open, and practises democracy and freedom, the party's identity and ideology must be preserved. 'Perhaps within the next 30 months, the new team must unveil strategic issues to strengthen the party in addressing sentiments and perceptions that may have been tarnished following Rafizi's faction's defeat,' he told Sinar Harian. In the PKR election for the 2025–2028 term, Rafizi, who is also the Pandan Member of Parliament, lost to Anwar's eldest daughter by a majority of nearly 6,000 votes. For the record, the Economy Minister had previously lost to Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali in the contest for the same position in 2018. Based on current developments, Sivamurugan opined that it is crucial for Nurul Izzah, as the new Deputy President, to prove that she is not merely 'Anwar's star', but a figure with credibility, reputation, authority and the capacity to carry the responsibilities of the position, beyond family ties perceived by outsiders. He said a more moderate and balanced political approach could be promoted as a key agenda by ensuring the party is strengthened through various leadership layers so that generational gaps and evolving expectations may be bridged. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Media and Information Studies Psychological Warfare Centre political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said Nurul Izzah's victory should be acknowledged by society and PKR members, as it reflects the delegates' will to choose the current leadership. He also noted that society has high expectations to see reform elements that could benefit both the public and party members. 'It is a new challenge for the PKR leadership to ensure the party remains relevant in the country's political arena, as well as to better align the party's interests with government machinery. 'This is also a necessary preparation, as GE16 is expected to be more challenging given the openness, the influence of social media algorithms, and artificial intelligence, which may become strategies in psychological warfare. 'It is important for all politicians, including PKR leadership, to be aware of this as it will shape the direction of the country's political future,' he said. PKR's strategist cannot be sidelined Rafizi's role as the 'architect strategist' of PKR's campaign machinery cannot be overlooked, as he has proven to be the most effective strategist the party has had. Despite the current challenges, Sivamurugan said the former right-hand man of Anwar should be persuaded to continue playing a different role within the party. 'Perhaps there will be disappointment for a while, including among his supporters, but PKR cannot deny that Rafizi has played a major role in its success so far. 'The Deputy President position is only for one person, but beyond position, rank and status, he remains significant and can still contribute. Perhaps the president (Anwar) could consider offering him another position. 'The question is whether Rafizi is willing to take on another role, as during campaigning he expressed a desire to resign from his Cabinet post. Therefore, the party must consider what further steps should be taken to ensure disappointed members do not cause disruption—not only now, but also during the next election,' he said. Meanwhile, Sivamurugan expects the Pandan MP to continue strategising in other ways to remain active in politics, as Rafizi is known for being a vocal and open individual. 'Perhaps he will continue his agenda through podcasts while waiting for the situation to stabilise and reassess the need to return to politics,' he added.

Nurul Izzah faces defining test after PKR victory

PETALING JAYA: With the dust barely settled from a fiercely contested PKR election, newly elected deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar now faces a defining test, to heal a divided party and lead it into the next general election alongside Pakatan Harapan allies. Having unseated Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in a straight fight for the No. 2 post, analysts say the former Permatang Pauh MP must rally the party ahead of the 16th general election (GE16). International Islamic University Malaysia Assoc Prof Dr Syaza Shukri, who is also a fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute, said Nurul Izzah must now prove herself a leader in her own right, not merely the daughter of party president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'That Puteri Reformasi label highlights her long-standing struggle, but it also tethers her to her father's legacy. She needs to show she's her own person. From what I know, she's challenged him before and she should keep doing so.' Syaza noted that Nurul Izzah enjoys strong grassroots backing thanks to her approachable image and the unifying tone of her Damai campaign. 'Backed by party division leaders, she's in a good position to regroup PKR. While pushback from Rafizi's camp is expected, a mass walkout looks unlikely. Many are watching Rafizi's next move but for now, she must reassure members she remains committed to reform.' However, she cautioned that Nurul Izzah is now seen as part of the inner circle and rebuilding trust will be a challenge. 'It won't be easy but if she builds bridges with other leaders, she could revitalise the party's youthful base.' National Council of Professors fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan said one of her immediate priorities should be persuading Rafizi to remain in the Cabinet, a key step in proving she can lead the whole party, not just her faction. 'It's hard to shake off claims she benefits from her father's support. To build credibility, she must reunite PKR's top ranks.' Azmi recommended that she seek support from party veteran Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. 'Saifuddin's experience surpasses hers for now. He managed to engage Rafizi during the campaign and could play a crucial role in brokering reconciliation.' Universiti Sains Malaysia's Prof Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian echoed that view, noting that unity will be her biggest hurdle with GE16 on the horizon. While factionalism is expected during internal polls, he said Nurul Izzah's deep roots in PKR give her the platform to consolidate support. 'She was just 18 when the party was founded. Now at 44, she has credibility, strong communication skills and a resonant presence. As a woman, her visibility matters and she's been consistent on issues such as poverty, education and national unity. She can serve as a bridge between factions, helping ensure that party policies are not just debated but implemented, which is crucial to regaining trust both within and outside the party.' However, political analyst Dr Lim Teck Ghee warned that experience alone would not be enough to galvanise public support. 'She must tackle the friction in the party while navigating a political landscape shaped by populism, reform fatigue and growing demands for inclusivity. Malaysians who want a better future will be watching closely but time isn't on her side.' Analyst Khoo Kay Peng agreed, saying her top priority must be to reconnect with the grassroots, particularly after her loss in Permatang Pauh, a seat held by her family since 1982. 'She needs to regain that ground. Rebuilding trust among grassroots members would cement her role as deputy president and bolster her credibility as a national leader.' With Anwar serving as both party president and prime minister, Khoo said any perceived successor must demonstrate leadership ability beyond party lines.
