Marc-André ter Stegen to return as Germany's number one, Julian Nagelsmann confirms: 'I've always emphasised that Marc is our #1.' Speaking following the announcement of the Germany squad for the Nations League finals (via @iMiaSanMia), Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Marc-André ter Stegen will return as the number one. On the Barcelona goalkeeper, Nagelsmann said: 'I've always emphasized that Marc is our #1. I spoke to Hansi and he said that Marc is showing top performances and is in top shape. He played two games and will probably play again on Sunday. We're looking forward to having him back. It's the right decision' Advertisement ter Stegen has missed a large portion of the season after suffering a knee injury with Barcelona back in September. The 33-year-old recently made his return to regularly featuring for the LaLiga champions. ter Stegen had only been number one for one international break following the retirement of Manuel Neuer after EURO 2024 last summer. While the Mönchengladbach native was absent, Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel shared the goalkeeping duties, before Baumann then became the interim number one. During the mini-tournament, Germany will face Portugal in the first semi-final in Munich, before potentially facing the winner of France vs Spain in Munich once again in the final. If they lose to Portugal, Germany will face the loser of the other semi-final in Stuttgart. GGFN | Jack Meenan Advertisement

Germany vs. Italy: UEFA Nations League Preview

Julian Nagelsmann's Germany seek to secure passage to the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League semi-finals on Sunday evening. The German national team will play before a full capacity crowd of 81,365 live spectators at Signal Iduna Park. Nagelsmann's team enter the second leg of the quarter-final tie with Italy carrying a 2-1 aggregate goal lead from Thursday's fixture at the San Siro. Nagelsmann's second half tactical tweaks enabled the Germans to overcome a 0-1 half-time deficit in the previous match. It stands to reason that influential second half subs Tim Kleindienst and Nico Schlotterbeck will feature in the starting XI this time. Kleindienst scored the equaliser shortly after coming on. Schlotterbeck looks set to start in the stadium of his Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund. Germany initially lined up in a 4-2-2-2 formation against Italy on Thursday. Nagelsmann clearly aimed to give Mainz call-ups Nadiem Amiri and Jonathan Burkardt a formal audition together. When this went awry, the Bundestrainer switched to a 4-2-3-1/5-4-1 hybrid at the half. Schlotterbeck – on for a weak David Raum at the half – filled in at left-back. Speaking at a DFB press conference on Saturday, Nagelsmann singled out Schlotterbeck for praise. After not mentioning Schlotterbeck at all during his initial post-match comments, the Bundestrainer plainly stated that 'Nico was the difference' in his latest public comments. It's quite possible that the Dortmund professional will get another audition at left back. An alternate scenario in which Schlotterbeck still starts could see the BVB man work alongside Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger in a back-three. In this case, Joshua Kimmich would move into his preferred midfield position alongside close friend and teammate Leon Goretzka in midfield. Schlotterbeck could also replace Tah – who has been in weak form recently – outright. With Amiri looking uncomfortable on the second attacking axis on Thursday, Nagelsmann finds himself in need of another winger. Both Karim Adeyemi and Jamie Leweling had their moments in late relief shifts off the bench. The former nevertheless demonstrated a bit more pace. Given how spectacularly Adeyemi began the year with the German U21s (before getting injured) a start for another Dortmund man seems plausible. Leweling might start if Nagelsmann opts to give his VfB Stuttgart teammate Maximilian Mittelstädt a go at left-back. In that case Leroy Sané will remain on the right. In total, GGFN projects three BVB starters. Oliver Baumann – Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rudiger, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck – Pascal Groß, Leon Goretzka – Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Karim Adeyemi – Tim Kleindienst GGFN | Peter Weis

Xabi Alonso talks tactics, Sebastian Hoeneß, and VfB Stuttagrt: 'It's going to be demanding'

During a press conference on Friday afternoon, Xabi Alonso spoke with Get German Football News about VfB Stuttgart, Sebastian Hoeneß, and the demands that a game against the Swabians brings. Alonso's side travel to 8th place Stuttgart ahead of Sunday evening's game this weekend. They'll be looking for an immediate response to last matchday's 0-2 loss to Werder Bremen. A disappointing defeat regardless, but the fact they failed to close the gap on Bayern, themselves losing last weekend, made it all the more disappointing. Games between B04 and Stuttgart are always well anticipated by Bundesliga fans. In their last four meetings in all competitions, we've witnessed 13 goals and even a penalty shootout. GGFN questioned Alonso on the threat VfB carries and how he plans on nullifying Stuttgart's attacking threat. 'I think we know each other very well, these are the games you always look forward to and enjoy watching.' He continued: 'We know their qualities. They have good intensity and know when to trigger the press. They get good distance between players and can create space in order for their forwards to run into.' The B04 coach then spoke about his Stuttgart counterpart, Sebastian Hoeneß, and what B04 must do in order to win. 'They have been a great time to watch for a while now under Sebastian Hoeneß. We will have to do many good things to stop them for sure. It will be demanding [for our players].' Leverkusen are still without talisman Florian Wirtz, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, which will see him sidelined until early April. GGFN | Jamie Allen

Florian Wirtz facing several weeks out due to ankle injury

Florian Wirtz will be absent from the Bayer Leverkusen team for several weeks following an ankle injury sustained against Werder Bremen last weekend, the club has confirmed. As reported by GGFN last weekend, Wirtz was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, and he headed to the hospital for an MRI scan. The fear was that Wirtz had sustained a potential syndesmosis tear, which would have ruled him out for the rest of the season. However, the injury isn't as bad as first feared, but the attacking midfielder will be absent for several weeks, including the home leg of Bayer Leverkusen's Last 16 Champions League tie against Bayern Munich. Sporting director Simon Rolfes explained: 'Florian's absence naturally affects us at this stage of the season, but we will make up for it with a strong team. We know Florian and know that he will be back as soon as possible. Everyone will support him. We assume that he will be fit again for the final stretch of the season.' Depending on how Wirtz gets on with his rehabilitation, he could also miss the club's DFB Pokal semi-final against Arminia Bielefeld on April 1st. GGFN | Jamie Allen
