Turns out, Gen Z does not rule TRNSMT music festival any longer

I'm told Friday had drawn the typical TRNSMT teens, baby-faced and full of booze gulped down in hidden corners of the Merchant City before entering. But today, the little rascals seem few and far between. Between sets, clusters of festivalgoers compete over spots to languish in the shade and wait for another cooling gust to brush past. The average age is surprisingly higher than I expected. And it is simply too hot to binge drink anything but water, unless you want to be wheeled out on a stretcher. TRNSMT in Glasgow Green (Image: GT) Today's headliners are Biffy Clyro, Fontaines D.C. and The Kooks. Around midday, an alert dings on mobiles across the festival, teasing a secret act from 'Mrs Rock n Roll' was pending before Amy Macdonald surprised fans in The Hangout. The tiny stage was overflowing with hundreds of revellers craning for a glimpse of the Bishopbriggs-born singer. Other acts across the day included Inhaler, Jake Bugg, Brogeal, Hot Wax, and Biig Piig, among others. I spot more Irish tricolours than saltires wrapped like capes around revellers. The lineup today is heavy on the Celtic rock with Brogeal playing the King Tut's Stage and Fontaines D.C. taking the penultimate slot on the Main Stage ahead of Biffy Clyro. Inhaler, the Irish band fronted by Bono's son Elijah Hewson also played the Main Stage in the afternoon. Fans at the festival (Image: GT) Shade is weclome (Image: GT) I feel a sense of dread when it's time to get something to eat. I resent that attendees are not allowed to bring their own food into the festival. Pounds don't stretch that far behind the festival gates. Fortunately, the festival's handy app has all of the food offerings (pricing included) programmed in. It means I can save my energy for dancing, rather than wasting it wandering aimlessly under the scorching sun looking for something to eat. So fish tacos it is, three for £12. Decent, but I'm still hungry. Of all the acts playing today, I'm most excited for Fontaines D.C. It is remarkable to be able to see them a week after they played their biggest-ever headline show at Finsbury Park in London alongside Irish rap trio Kneecap and Australian punk band Amyl and the Sniffers. Kneecap were supposed to play TRNSMT on Friday but was dropped from the lineup in May amid an ongoing police investigation into one of its members. Fontaines D.C. are undoubtedly the biggest band of a generation. That many people had come to the festival today just to see them was clear. Everywhere you looked, there was a nod to the award-winning band, from Romance heart tops to the coveted football jersey that guitarist Carlos O'Connell designed in collaboration with Bohemian FC. When they finally take the stage on Saturday evening, the band's unwavering solidarity with Palestine is put on full display. Chants of 'Free Palestine' echo throughout the crowd during quiet moments in their set. Later, I discovered that two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were rushed to the hospital after becoming unwell at the festival. In a separate incident outside the main gate near Glasgow High Court, another teenage boy, 15, was treated by medics after being attacked. So not completely without incident, but a welcome change from the volume of arrests witnessed in years past. Overall, police said there were just four arrests on Saturday. Offences included breach of the peace, possession of a knife, drug offence and breaching curfew. Glasgow is lucky to have a huge city festival like TRNSMT. With ticket prices to concerts soaring higher each year, festivals offer people the chance to see a variety of new and established acts for a decent price. As a UNESCO City of Music, it was nice to know that the festival is not just for the youth anymore. This year proved that millennials and beyond can find their place at the festival.

Fontaines DC prove they are top notch with poignant festival set

The crowd nervously chitters with excitement, coming alive as the band launches into Favourite, the second most popular track from the Dublin band's latest album, Romance. The set was quieter than expected. A sun subdued crowd swayed slowly as the post-punk band kicked off their set with Here's The Thing. They moved seamlessly through their setlist, the energy of the audience ebbing and flowing between hits and fan favourites from earlier albums. But there was a prickling anticipation before Chatten spoke. Fontaines DC at TRNSMT (Image: GT) (Image: GT) Near the back of the crowd, whispers of the 'sound not being great' are audible. While we wish to feel the bass and thumping of drummer Tom Coll, we are left slightly jarred by the echoing of Jake Bugg over at the King Tut's stage, feeling the distant quiver of his set under our feet. The sky was a crystal clear blue and the 30-degree heat from the sun had coloured tens of thousands of fans a dozen shades of pink, but still a cloud lingered above the penultimate set at the main stage. It broke away near the end of the gig as the Palestinian flag was displayed on the big screen behind the stage. As they played I Love You, the words 'Free Palestine' flashed like a strobe light in the band's distinctive font before 'Israel is committing genocide use your voice' beamed across the screens. Fans draped in the Irish tricolour whooped and cheered. Chants of 'Free Palestine' intermittently erupted and faded through the lulls of the set. Fontaines DC at TRNSMT (Image: GT) Fans who wanted to feel the pulse of the show were not left disappointed by the brilliant performance by Fontaines DC, fresh off their largest headline show last week alongside Irish rap trio Kneecap and Australian band Amyl and the Sniffers. While it could have been far louder, the band's impeccable performance against the backdrop of backlash their contemporaries have faced in standing up against atrocities being committed in Gaza, and their choice to take a stand, was louder than any sound system could pump over the heat-wilted grass at Glasgow Green. A poignant performance from a band that has proved itself to truly be one of the best.

Supercars championship leader Broc Feeney bounces back with ‘fantastic' Townsville win

Runaway Supercars championship leader Broc Feeney has secured his ninth win of the season, flying to victory in the second race of the Townsville round. After a tough day on Friday, Feeney returned to the form that led to him winning five straight races across the Perth and Darwin legs. The Triple Eight star finished more than six seconds ahead of Walkinshaw Andretti United's Chaz Mostert, who made up 15 places after qualifying 17th. Kiwi Matt Payne was the other driver to secure a podium finish. Pole-sitter David Reynolds, who was battling illness, was overtaken by Payne on lap one. Feeney made his move during the safety car, jumping ahead of Payne and Reynolds on lap 14. After the race, Feeney started off by paying tribute to motorsport personality Tim Miles, who died in a road accident last week, with Mostert also remembering the GT competitor. The championship leader then heaped praise on his team. 'The turnaround from this team overnight has been pretty fantastic,' Feeney said. 'I had my doubts coming into today, even qualifying. 'But to get in there, we made a change to the shootout, and the thing was a rocket ship. 'What a great job by this pit crew, once again, to get us in the lead. 'From there, I could just manage the race, which I like doing up front. 'These guys were super quick, but I can't believe we turned that around to a win. 'That first one (pit stop) after the safety car, I was lucky. 'I just got Davey (Reynolds), and I knew I was going to be tight with Matty. 'I can't thank those guys enough for what they're doing at the moment.' Brodie Kostecki, who on Friday broke through for his first win since joining Dick Johnson Racing at the start of the season, came in fifth. The race was neutralised under the safety car on the opening lap after a wild collision that sent James Golding flying up on two wheels. Heading into Sunday's race, Feeney has a 201-point championship lead over Penrite's Payne.

Rangers legend praises Beatson's new menu at Glasgow cafes

Tinderbox and Glasgow coffee roaster, Matthew Algie, have teamed up with the charity for the second year in a row to raise money for cancer patients and their families across Scotland. The cafe has expanded its menu this year, adding three new refreshing lemonades – cloudy lemonade, strawberry and cherry, and tropical – with 50p from each drink going to the charity. Tropical, cloudy and strawberry and cherry lemonades are available (Image: GT/Beatson Cancer Charity) The expansion follows the success of last year's tropical cooler, which saw almost 1,000 drinks sold. Sports stars have already tried out the new summer range, including former Rangers player and Scottish football figure Gordon Smith. Mr Smith said: "Beatson Cancer Charity, Tinderbox, and Matthew Algie are on to a winner with this – it's undoubtedly the drink of the summer. "I've been a long-time supporter of the Beatson Cancer Charity and all the amazing support they give to families in the West of Scotland. (Image: GT/Beatson Cancer Charity)"Initiatives like this are vital – they help raise awareness and much-needed funds for such an important cause." All the drinks are made with locally sourced ingredients, including those from Glasgow-based Matthew Algie. Carlo Ventisei, owner of Tinderbox, said: "After such a strong response to last summer's collaboration, we wanted to do even more. "The new menu is a way to offer variety while continuing to support a cause that means a great deal to our team and customers." Bella the Bee launching the new menu (Image: GT/Beatson Cancer Charity) Heilidh Wilson, corporate fundraiser at Beatson Cancer Charity, added: "We're delighted to be working with Tinderbox and Matthew Algie for a second year. "Last summer's response was incredible, and it's brilliant to see the collaboration grow. "Every drink sold helps us continue supporting people facing cancer across the west of Scotland – and we hope this expanded menu encourages even more people to get involved and support in a meaningful way." The lemonades will be available until the end of September at Tinderbox cafés in Byres Road, Charing Cross, Braehead, Princes Square, Glasgow Fort and Merchant City.
