JOHN MURDOCH'S DRIVE TIME: We try out the luxury GV70 electric Genesis SUV and discover Skoda holidays survey results

The Genesis GV70's exterior shares the same handsome looks as its petrol-powered sibling apart from a re-designed front grille which cleverly hides the charging port. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John tries out the luxury GV70 electric SUV from Genesis and discovers how a Skoda survey found that lots of UK motorists are planning to take holidays at home this year, with Scotland a top destination. ‌ The world's top golfers had the opportunity to win a luxury Genesis GV70 at the recent Scottish Open by grabbing a hole In one at a par 3 but the talented field did not manage it. ‌ Just days later (without having to strike a ball) I got the chance to sample the all-electric GV70 SUV which was first launched in the UK back in late 2022 and, other than a price increase, it remains the same premium, stylish vehicle competing for a share of a crowded market. ‌ It is only available in Sport trim and starts at£65,105 before adding any options. It features a pair of electric motors delivering up to 483bhp in 'Boost' mode and a stonking 700Nm of torque. That combination is enough to tackle 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds. With a claimed combined range of 283 miles - or 367 around town - it remains practical as well as luxurious. The exterior shares the same handsome looks as its petrol-powered sibling apart from a re-designed front grille which cleverly hides the charging port. The cabin is superbly crafted and put together with excellent materials and the quality is excellent with room for five adults to travel in comfort. ‌ Like its siblings this model features a14.5-inch central infotainment touchscreen which can also be operated by a rotary controller dial, an eight-inch digital dash, powered leather seats, and ambient mood lighting. All controls and switches are well placed and so you can control the heating and ventilation without fuss. Heating is available for both seating rows and soft materials cover every surface, from the inside of the door handles to leather effect trim for the dashboard. ‌ On the practical side the boot, which comes as standard with a powered tailgate, offers a generous 503-litres of capacity which increases to 1678 when the 60:40 split-fold rear seats are down. There's also a useful 25-litre trunk at the front of the car which is handy for storing the charging cables. ‌ The GV70 can be sporty when you want it to be but it is really designed for luxury and comfort to spoil its passengers. Front facing cameras scan for obstacles like speed bumps and potholes and the adaptive dampers and suspension adjust to keep things smooth. Noise-cancelling technology keeps the cabin quiet even at motorway speeds and the GV70 is also handy on country roads. ‌ Three drive modes - Eco, Comfort and Sport - let you change your driving style to suit your mood and there is also e-Terrain technology to provide extra grip in mud, sand and snow. You can also save energy with the car's clever regenerative system which can be adjusted from wheel-mounted paddle-shifters. A rapid charger will take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes. ‌ As you would expect the GV70 comes with all the latest active and passive safety systems including a front centre airbag, smart cruise control, emergency braking and Evasive Steering Assist - which will actively help turn the car away from a potential collision. Like all Genesis models the GV70 comes with a five-year care plan including warranty, roadside assistance and servicing. FAST FACTS: ‌ Price: £65.105. Mechanical: 242bhp, electric engine driving all-four wheels via an automatic transmission. Max speed: 146mph. ‌ 0-62mph: 4.2 seconds. Range: 283 miles. Insurance group: 50. ‌ CO2 emissions: 0g/km. Bik rating: Two per cent. Warranty: Five years/unlimited mileage. ‌ Overall rating (out of 5): 4.6. In other motoring news, a survey by Skoda UK finds 83 per cent of UK motorists are keen to holiday and explore on home turf this year, with Scotland a top destination. Brits are taking holiday plans into their own hands, with 61 per cent considering going on a road trip this year because it means they can be spontaneous and stop where they choose. ‌ More than half (52 per cent) want to unleash their adventurous side and visit places they've never been before, while visiting friends and family en-route is another popular reason for taking to the road. For the journey, UK motorists say nice weather is the most important contributing factor to a good road trip, while scenic routes and the company in the car are all important as well. ‌ Cost is a key factor in the decision to jump behind the wheel, with 33 per cent saying driving is more affordable than going by plane, train or boat. More than half are happy to travel more than 300 miles for a road trip, while almost one in 10 say they'd be willing to cover 1001 miles or more. Here are the top five places to head on a road trip, according to British drivers: The Scottish Highlands (42 per cent). The Lake District, Cumbria (40 per cent). Yorkshire Dales (36 per cent). Isle of Skye, Scotland (35 per cent). St. Ives, Cornwall (35 per cent). *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Sign up to our newsletters here.

BMW Isn't Going to Like the Genesis GV70's 27-Inch Dash Display

Although there's a push in the industry to return to physical buttons, switches, and dials rather than touchscreen-only controls, there's no going back to a time when cars were screenless. Technology will only become more advanced, and touchscreens are a present reality that's not going away anytime soon. It took BMW several iterations of its iDrive system before it got it right, having started in 2001 in the 7-Series. BMW's iDrive 8.5 is now present on most of the brand's current models, with infotainment screens ranging from 10.7 inches in the 2-Series up to 14.9 inches in models like the 7-Series, X5, and XM. iDrive 8.5 is beautiful, easy to operate, and quick to respond–together with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the expansive setups are the focal point of the premium cabins. However, Hyundai's luxury arm, Genesis, has something to say about that, with a huge 27-inch panoramic OLED display in models like the GV70, which we recently drove. It's sleek, futuristic, and user-friendly-and BMW definitely won't like how good it is. The GV70 has already earned praise for its refined driving manners, powerful engine choices, unique styling, premium materials, and outstanding value. But the 2026 model, part of Genesis's mid-cycle refresh, introduces what could be its most game-changing feature: the massive 27-inch digital display. Unlike many automakers that split screen real estate into separate gauge clusters and infotainment screens, the version in the GV70 is one big swath of electronic goodness with no black frame partition in between. Drivers can split the screen if so desired, but no line of demarcation prevents full-width display. The result is a sweeping curved display that enhances usability while offering a visual smorgasbord of menus and driver data in one stunning layout. Genesis says the screen was inspired by the horizon, a design meant to increase visual calmness while maintaining important vehicular information. The OLED panel delivers vivid color, deep contrast, crisp fonts, and smooth transitions, making navigation, vehicle settings, and media playback feel intuitive and premium. Widgets are customizable, too, and the redesigned interface is easier to read and decipher than BMWs, reducing the time needed to operate functions. Genesis did its homework, and the payoff is one that balances style and user friendliness. Genesis hasn't forgotten those who love to drive, either, being a brand that's committed to excellent physical controls, not just on-screen touch controls. The revised center stack provides knobs for audio, temperature control, and infotainment selection. They're wonderfully tactile with great knurling, and they're also nicely sized for easy operation without having to take your eyes off the road. As we mentioned before, the current BMW Drive 8.5 is one of the best in the industry, after numerous also-ran versions before it. On top of that, the iDrive infotainment system was one of the first to shift control to a rotary knob and screen-based menu system, and the brand continues to innovate with features like natural voice control and augmented-reality navigation. The 2025 BMW X3, now entering a new generation, comes with BMW's iDrive 9 system and a curved display of its own: a 12.3-inch digital cluster paired with a huge 14.9-inch touchscreen, both slightly angled toward the driver. It's a clean, functional setup, but also one that relies on on-screen climate controls rather than switchgear like the GV70's. BMW's recent shift toward touchscreen-only climate controls and deep menu layers for common functions can be frustrating, overly complicating simple operations. While BMW's tech is undeniably powerful, it often feels more like software designed by engineers rather than something intuitive or joyful to use. That's where Genesis not only creates beautiful and seamless screens, but it also carefully thinks about the user experience. The GV70's 27-inch screen seems more fluid in its operation, and climate controls remain accessible through physical knobs below the screen. It seems the Germans prefer a bit of obfuscation, as the menus are visually cluttered and complex. Genesis avoids this, and it speaks volumes about the brand. Yes, BMW still eclipses Genesis sales figures, but the South Korean luxury brand is making some serious headway. BMW still leads the segment in terms of raw sales, but Genesis has become an increasingly uncomfortable competitor in the Bavarian's rearview mirror. In 2023, BMW sold approximately 65,000 X3s in the U.S., while Genesis sold just under 25,000 GV70s -a respectable number for a relatively new player in a game BMW has been playing for a long time. Genesis exhibited more growth than BMW and Lexus, while Audi has dropped. With the 2026 refresh, Genesis is leaning hard into its tech set. The 27-inch display isn't just a flashy update; it's a direct challenge to BMW in functionality and style. Genesis is making a strong statement that it's not just playing catch-up; it wants to lead the pack. That same 27-inch stunner is also in the G70 sedan and GV80 SUV. Watch the cascade continue. Of course, the GV70 isn't just about the in-car technology. It offers a choice of robust engines, including a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a powerful 375-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, both with standard all-wheel drive. The ride and quiet road manners are improved for 2026, yet the GV70 remains responsive, with quick launches and confident cornering ability. Interior materials continue to rival German rivals, with quilted Nappa leather, real aluminum trim, and a clean, airy cabin layout. For 2025, Genesis has also improved cabin ergonomics and updated the rotary shifter and climate controls for a more streamlined experience. The upgraded and much larger screen also gave rise to an improved center stack and center console. Add standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new wireless device charger, and driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and blind-spot monitoring, and the GV70 continues to check just about every premium box that a BMW X3 can, for a lower price. Genesis is onto something, and it's not just value. When a newer brand matches or exceeds your tech, comfort, and build quality (often for less money), consumers start to question the premium charged for Bimmers. Genesis was once viewed as an also-ran, lacking the power, polish, and technology of the Germans. Just a handful of years ago, Genesis was considered an alternative brand that was more accessible but less desirable. That's no longer the case when you put them side-by-side. Genesis understands this shift in mastery and execution and is capitalizing on it. The 27-inch display is more than a screen, it's a statement that the brand is going after BMW's meal with a big fork and knife. Rather than being a copy of BMW, Genesis is doing things its own way, and sometimes even better than the rest of the field. No one will choose the GV70 over an X3 simply due to the displays, but there's no denying that it's an important part of the sport-luxury SUV conversation. It's the entire package, of course, but the Genesis package is that much more compelling with cutting-edge electronics, great visuals, and smooth operation. 2025 GV70's 27-inch panoramic display won't make the X3 obsolete, but it may make it feel unnecessarily complicated. Oh, and those Genesis physical controls add more than just icing to this South Korean automotive cake. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

2025 Genesis GV70 Electrified facelift: specs, trims, charging, price

The GV70 is a handsome thing, so a light facelift is no issue | Genesis This article contains affiliate links. We may earn a small commission on items purchased through this article, but that does not affect our editorial judgement. The refreshed Genesis GV70 Electrified might be a rare sight on UK roads, but with serious style, luxury tech and nearly 300 miles of range, it's a bold alternative to Audi and Porsche. This is the facelifted version of the Genesis GV70 Electrified which, as you can probably guess, is the battery-powered version of Genesis's sort-of-SUV. And, for a few reasons, you might struggle to spot the changes. Partly because the GV70 is an inexplicably rare sight on the roads anyway, and partly because the changes are very subtle. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There are some visual tweaks to the front, some new wheel designs, and some alterations at the rear. But, unlike most facelifts, the superficial alterations aren't really the big news. The biggest change is in the trim levels. There was previously only one "Sport" option, which limited buyers to one price point. Now there are three options; Pure, Dynamic, and Luxury. Indicators have moved, and there are some light styling tweaks, but it's pretty much business as usual from most angles | Genesis Prices start at a shade under £66,000 for the Pure version, and it's incredibly well specced. A Luxury version could cost north of £80,000 if you're frivolous with the options list, but it'll be a very luxurious car indeed. Because the whole ethos of Genesis is to set itself out as a premium brand and, even on looks alone, it really does. While I was spending a week in the new GV70 Electrified two people asked me if it was a Bentley and one even asked if it was an Aston Martin. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It's a similar story inside, too. There's such a lavish feel about the materials and the layout, and especially the tech on offer. It feels more like a Bentley than a "posh Hyundai". Trim levels are one of the biggest changes, and it's a plush place to sit in all versions | Genesis And it's an interesting proposition, because it's priced to compete with the likes of Audi's Q6 e-tron and even Porsche's Macan, so it really needs to pull something out of the bag. And I think it does. It's incredibly quiet and comfortable; long journeys are a delight, and the cutting-edge suite of driver aids takes all the effort out of a motorway stint or a B-road blast. It's quick, too. In all trim levels there's 429bhp on offer, spread across all four wheels and, even in a car weighing well over two tonnes, progress is rapid. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad And, just in case it doesn't quite feel rapid enough, there's a naughty "boost" button on the steering wheel that gives you a 10-second burst of 483bhp. It's not strictly necessary, and it'll be mostly used as a party piece to scare your passengers with, but it's huge fun. The new infotainment screen is fiddly but functional | Genesis All this frivolity won't help your electric range, though. While the styling offers a superb amount of aerodynamic efficiency, the weight eats in to the overall efficiency and you'll struggle to reach 4.0mi/kWh, even on a steady run. That said, the new version has a bigger battery - it's now 84kWh, and it can charge at up to 240kW. It equates to a range of up to 298 miles in the Pure version on its 19" wheels, but expect something more like 250 on a good day. There's a big change inside, too. The dash is now dominated by a slab of digital display, and barely any buttons. This would normally bother me, but there's a neat little panel for the climate control, and the main screen is very intuitive. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The climate control panel is surprisingly good, but you'll be told off for using it | Genesis The driver display is less straightforward, largely controlled through steering wheel buttons. And it's just too complicated. I got used to it after a while, but the amount of time I had to spend not looking at the road was rather frightening. And, quite maddeningly, while I'm not looking at the road, the Genesis driver attention warning cuts in constantly and tells you off. That would be fine if I'd fallen asleep, or if I was carelessly cycling through my podcasts or something, but even just changing the air conditioning temperature got me a roasting. These are the sorts of foibles that can be tweaked with software updates, so perhaps I'm being harsh, but it was an annoyingly conspicuous irritation in an otherwise serene cabin. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Boot space is very good, although the floor is a tad shallow | Genesis Everything else about the GV70 is immensely likeable. The boot's a bit shallow, but it goes back a long way, there's generous space for rear passengers, and Genesis offers some of the best customer service in the business. Genesis is trying really hard to break our buying cycle of always opting for the German offerings and, it feels like their chances are improving with every launch. There's a long way to go though, so I have a feeling the new GV70 will continue to be a rare sight. And it's a pity, because it's excellent. Amazon Stoplock Pro steering wheel lock slashed to £36.99 in Prime Day deal £ 36.99 Buy now Buy now Modern car security systems can be bypassed alarmingly quickly, using relay devices to amplify the signal from your key fob - unlocking, and even starting, your car. It means your car's security system just isn't secure enough any more, which has led lots of people to add a second layer of security - this time a physical layer. There are lots of options on the market, but Stoplock has led the way for many years, and its Stoplock Pro lock is one of its most popular - and Amazon is selling one for £36.99 as part of its Prime Day sales bonanza.

Why the Genesis GV70 is a CarExpert Choice winner

The Genesis GV70 may be the fledgling luxury brand's best-selling model in Australia, but it doesn't sell in the same volumes as rivals from Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz – and we reckon that ought to change. We chose the GV70 as Australia's best mid-size luxury SUV in our inaugural 2025 CarExpert Choice Awards, ahead of the higher-volume BMW X3 and Lexus NX which were finalists for the title. "While Genesis struggles with its brand awareness and allure, the Genesis GV70 has been the best mid-size luxury SUV since it first came to the Australian market in 2021," said CarExpert founder Alborz Fallah. "Last year, it underwent a mid-life update that has further improved its offering, interior and packaging, making it the clear CarExpert choice in its segment." Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. This update didn't mess with the distinctive exterior styling, instead bringing an overhauled interior with a huge 27-inch OLED display, as well as an expanded suite of active safety and driver assist technology, plus mechanical enhancements such as retuned suspension. Genesis says the result is a quieter, more rigid vehicle with more technology than ever before. "The Genesis GV70 is arguably the brand's best product right now, offering strong value against legacy premium competition as well as a wide spread of variants and powertrains," said marketplace editor James Wong. "It looks and feels special, offers heaps of features and tech, and goes to great lengths to differentiate itself from any Hyundai product. It's also great to drive, if a little thirsty in the petrol grades." Petrol engines comprise a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6, while Genesis also offers a dual-motor all-wheel drive electric version called the Electrified GV70, which was also recently updated. As we noted in our recent review, in 3.5T guise you can get performance comparable to the BMW X3 M50 or Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 for around $20,000-30,000 less, despite more equipment and technology and a better aftersales package. Genesis may have a smaller dealer network than the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but it includes five years of free scheduled servicing with its vehicles. If you live within 70km of a Genesis outlet, a member of the company's concierge team will also collect your car for its service and leave you with a Genesis courtesy car. This is in addition to a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, which has become the standard in the luxury car market. Genesis has a fixed-pricing model like Mercedes-Benz, but while you can't haggle on price, even the base GV70 comes with an enormous list of standard equipment including a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a hands-free power tailgate. With a base price of $78,700 before on-roads, the GV70 is over $10,000 cheaper than a significantly less powerful, less well-equipped entry-level Mercedes-Benz GLC and around $8000 cheaper than the most affordable BMW X3. It also matches those vehicles with a rear/all-wheel drive platform not shared with any non-luxury models. Would we love to see a more efficient powertrain to match the Lexus NX's hybrid or Audi Q5's diesel options? Absolutely, particularly given Genesis dropped the thrifty turbo-diesel previously offered here. We'd also love to see more Genesis retail outlets in Australia, though the brand is continuing to expand its network. But even as it is, the GV70 stands out in this segment for its rich mix of value for money, excellent technology, first-class refinement, engaging dynamics and distinctive styling. That's why it's our choice among luxury mid-size SUVs. MORE: Explore the Genesis GV70 showroom Content originally sourced from:

RAY MASSEY: New Genesis is a proper revelation

In the beginning was Genesis – the car firm, not the rock band, nor the opening book of the Bible. Ten years ago the upmarket Korean manufacturer became a standalone spin-off from its parent company Hyundai, which also owns Kia. And just four years ago in 2021, with great razzmatazz, Genesis launched itself in the UK and mainland Europe. But a combination of being the new kid on the block during a period of market instability, plus a slew of cheaper Chinese imports, meant the supposed springboard into the mainstream proved muted. So Genesis went back to the drawing board, slimmed down its range and is in the process of relaunching itself with a fresh stable of models – starting with the revamped G70 Electrified SUV, which I've just been driving. It's the first new Genesis in two years, although it will be followed by the smaller GV60 available to order from July. The new GV70 is a big beast packed with plenty of power – including a 'boost' button and fingerprint authentication. It's a smart alternative to established rivals from BMW, Audi and Tesla. Its styling is also suspiciously like that of a Bentley – at a fraction of the price. But imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Riding on 20in wheels, powered by an 84kWh battery (up from 77kWh) and with two electric motors, my all-wheel drive 490hp GV70 accelerates from rest in just 4.4 seconds – providing you press the 'boost' button and hold on to your hat when you do. For the rest of the time, it sails along with a more than adequate 440hp, with good handling and precise steering. Its engaging feel is in part due to a 'virtual gear shift' system, which electronically mimics the feel and sound of an 8-speed automatic gear-box on a petrol car. Beautifully finished outside and in, there are three trim levels, starting with Pure on 19in, priced from £65,915; Dynamic from £70,715 and range-topping Luxury with sumptuous Nappa leather which I tried first, from £74,915 – the latter two both on 20in tyres. There are three main drive modes – Eco, Comfort and Sport – plus a new 'AI' mode that reads the road and your driving style and adapts accordingly There are three main drive modes – Eco, Comfort and Sport – plus a new 'AI' mode that reads the road and your driving style and adapts accordingly. You can also set up the car for mud, sand and snow. There's decent space in the flexible boot, too, which expands from 503 litres to 1,678 litres with the rear seats down. Another neat detail is the charging port door on the front grill heats up in winter to prevent it freezing. Inside the beautifully appointed cabin, the centrepiece of the new dashboard design is a vast 27-inch one-piece digital display which dominates the front near the flat-bottomed steering wheel. But there are still plenty of physical buttons. Relaxation was assured as I was serenaded by a harmonious Bang and Olufsen 15-speaker surround-sound system. Fast charging is good with an 80 per cent charge promised in 19 minutes on a fast charger, but range at under 300 miles – at 298 miles it's an increase from 283 miles - is still lagging behind the competition. You can even 'clean' your phone as it charges - bathed under ultra violet light to kill-off microscopic bugs – thanks to a UV-C sterilisation box. Not a bad revival for Genesis – a second time around. Time to salute AA as it reaches 120 It's time to salute the Automobile Association, which celebrated its 120th anniversary on Thursday this week. The AA breakdown service was originally founded in 1905 as a response to sneaky police speed traps – alerting members to constables hiding behind bushes. Warning drivers of an impending speed trap was – and remains – illegal. So to get around the law, the AA cunningly introduced the salute, which AA roadside patrols would give to every passing member's car (identified by an AA badge on the front grille) – UNLESS there was a police speeding trap ahead. The famous AA salute was dropped in 1962, coinciding with the first batch of yellow vans, which took over from motorcycles and sidecars, pictured.
