Teenager dead, 3 injured in partial structural collapse at Portsmouth Portuguese club
PORTSMOUTH – Authorities say a 15-year-old girl died and three other people suffered significant injury after a partial structural collapse at the Portuguese American Citizens Club during a graduation party on Saturday, June 7. Officials said multiple people were trapped when a concrete stairwell leading into the Power Street building collapsed. Police and fire crews from multiple communities responded to the scene where about 75 people had gathered for the evening celebration. The injured included two 17-year-old girls and a 49-year-old woman. All were taken to Rhode Island Hospital. No identities were immediately released. Gov. Dan McKee said on social media his office was closely monitoring the situation: 'Our hearts are with the Portuguese community and all those impacted. I'm deeply grateful to the first responders and praying for everyone's safety.' Said U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo in a similar post: 'My thoughts are with the family of the young victim killed and those injured in the tragic accident at the Portuguese American Citizens Club in Portsmouth this evening. Thank you to the first responders and local officials leading the response. My team stands ready to help in any way possible.' The incident is under investigation. Democrats demand details on the future of EPA labs
Top House Science, Space and Technology Committee Democrats are insisting that EPA leaders explain their plans for the agency's research labs while meanwhile accusing them of dishonesty. 'It is time to tell the truth,' ranking member Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said in a caustically worded Tuesday letter to Administrator Lee Zeldin. Lofgren asked Zeldin whether EPA intends to close any of its 10 field laboratories and research facilities, and if so, which ones. Should any of those facilities remain open, Lofgren asked, will their budget and staffing levels increase to pick up work from those that close? And which EPA program office will run them? Advertisement Joining the California Democrat on the letter was Rep. Gabe Amo (D-R.I.), ranking member on the Science Subcommittee on the Environment.

Fire damages a popular Rhode Island restaurant known for its 'pond-to-table' menu
One of Rhode Island 's most famous restaurants has been damaged after a fire broke out early Tuesday morning. Union Fire District Steve Pinch told reporters firefighters arrived at 3:45 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingston. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. No injuries have been reported. A phone message seeking additional details was left at the the Union Fire District of South Kingstown. The oyster bar has operated a seven-acre aquaculture operation on a local salt pond since 2002, and later opened the restaurant on the waterfront in 2009 where it quickly became a 'pond-to-table' destination for diners. The restaurant regularly offers oyster farm tours for the public. The oyster bar's littlenecks and chourico dish was lauded one of the ' Best Dishes ' of the year in 2023 and USA Today listed the location on its ' Restaurants of the Year ' list in 2024. 'Everybody in town either works or knows somebody who works at the oyster bar, or comes here and enjoys the oyster bar, so we are just saddened for all of the employees and the owner,' Pinch told WPRI-TV. The fire comes just days before Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial kick-off to summer and a boost in business for New England 's seaside businesses. 'I'm grateful there were no injuries and thankful to first responders for their quick response at a treasured local institution,' U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, a Rhode Island Democrat, said in a statement. ___ An earlier version of this report had an incorrect spelling of the Matunuck Oyster Bar's name.
