Man charged after LC officer-involved shooting; Police to hold news conference
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department will be holding a news conference next week about the officer-involved shooting that happened on Thursday evening, March 13, that led to the detention of a 19-year-old suspect who was hurt, the department said in a news release. The news conference will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, in the Las Cruces City Hall Council Chambers located at 700 N. Main St. Las Cruces Police said that Gabriel Padilla, 19, was detained and taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition, after being shot on Thursday evening. He has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, police said. Suspect hurt after officer-involved shooting in Las Cruces As KTSM previously reported, police were called to reports of a man with a gun on the 500 block of South Main Street. The first officer on the scene located Padilla, who then led police on a short foot pursuit. According to the Las Cruces Police, during the pursuit, at least one round was discharged and struck Padilla. Padilla fell to the ground on the 800 block of South Main Street, and police found a firearm near where he fell, according to police. According to police, they believe there may be witnesses to the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed any part of the incident is asked to call (575) 526-0795. In addition, the conference will also be livestreamed on the City's YouTube channel, police said. The Officer Involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from the New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office and the New Mexico State University Police.
