Ireland claim four-wicket win over Zimbabwe to complete ODI series whitewash at Stormont

The 23-year-old's unbeaten 67 got the Girls in Green home with 11.1 overs to spare to take the one-day international series 2-0 — after three T20 wins — and earned her both the Player-of-the-Match and Series awards. After four one-sided wins over Zimbabwe in the past eight days, finally something akin to a contest broke out at the Stormont ground, despite the tourists being dismissed for a below par 178. Run-rate and overs were never going to be a problem for Ireland — but wickets were. Two went early and after Prendergast had added 49 with Gaby Lewis, the skipper was caught behind for 44, chasing a wide delivery, to leave her side on 95-3 in the 21st over. Suddenly batting didn't look so easy against leg-spinner Loreen Tshuma. Laura Delany battled to 18 from 31 balls, and Leah Paul was even more scratchy in making seven from 19 before she was the first of two victims in an over for Tshuma, who finished with 4-35. With 41 still needed a cool head was required and Prendergast provided it as she notched her fifth ODI half-century while junior partner Ava Canning settled Irish nerves with a mighty six over mid-wicket. 'Zim made us work for every run and put the pressure on, but Ava coming in at the end and whacking that six made it easier,' Prendergast said. 'I want to be the sort of player who's gutsy and stays there in tough situations and I was glad to be able to do that. 'All you ever want to do when you're chasing a total is to stay to the end, especially in a chase like that which became quite tricky.' Opening bowler Alana Dalzell was the pick of the Ireland attack, claiming 4-36, while spinner Laura McBride took three late wickets to cap an impressive start at the international level.

Prendergast helps Ireland to ODI sweep over Zimbabwe

Second one-day international, Stormont Ireland 182-6 (38.5 overs): Prendergast 67, Lewis 44; Tshuma 4-35 Zimbabwe 178 (49.1 overs): Mugeri-Tiripano 56, Mupachikwa, 45; Dalzell 4-36, McBride 3-22 Ireland won by four wickets Scorecard Orla Prendergast hit an unbeaten 67 as Ireland secured a two-game sweep in their one-day international series against Zimbabwe at Stormont. Following a 97-run victory at the Belfast venue on Saturday, as well as a 3-0 win in the T20 series between the sides this month, the hosts won by four wickets on Monday. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat but lost their first three wickets for only 38 runs. Alana Dalzell bowled opener Kelis Ndlovu for a first-ball duck before getting Loreen Tshuma to edge to wicket-keeper Amy Hunter for just four. When Chiedza Dhururu was caught lbw by Ava Canning, the tourists' innings looked to be teetering on the brink of collapse. Captain Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano steadied the ship with 56 from 92 balls, while Modester Mupachikwa chipped in with 45 to set Ireland a target of 178. While Ireland lost an early wicket of their own, with Sarah Forbes caught by Biza off the bowling of Chigora for only three runs, captain Gaby Lewis provided 44 off 59 balls. Mupachikwa stumped her fellow wicket keeper Amy Hunter for just 14 but what felt at the time like a potentially key wicket instead brought Prendergast to the crease. Her 67 included seven boundaries and marked her second consecutive half-century in the one-day format as Ireland eased to victory in the 39th over. Ireland return to action in a three-game T20 series against Pakistan in Dublin next month.

Pic: Sam Barnes/Sportsfile However after they all left Ireland's middle and back order didn't really get into it as the final 6 players all scored in the single digits before Ireland finished their innings 288-9. Luckily for them however Ireland didn't really need a big performance from their back order as when it their turn to field they got off to a flying start. Prendergast took two quick wickets in the first few overs. Zimbabwe's captain Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano was the visitor's top scorer with 48 as the guests struggled to get a partnership going and once she was gone, Zimbabwe didn't stand much of a chance and were bowled out for 191. Arlene Kelly however was the star bowler of the day going 2-17 in her six overs. Lara McBride did well on debut as she bowled for 2-25, the exact same as Jane Maguire. Lastly Cara Murray, who after struggling at the start of the Zimbabwean innings picked up two wickets towards the end to finish up on 2-53. After that fast start Ireland had done enough to see things out and secure yet another win over Zimbabwe. It's been a great start to life for Lloyd Tennant as Head Coach and speaking to ahead of this match, Ireland captain Gaby Lewis spoke about how it was good to have a new voice in camp. 'It's been really good, it's hard for him coming over not knowing the system or things so that did take a few weeks to get used to but he's been great and he's hit the ground running with the girls and I think it's a nice change after six years. With the T20 series win behind them as well Lewis spoke about the some of the best things this Irish squad are taking from this month. 'It was a great positive in that last T20 that we had a few changes in the team and the result was still the same, so I think it shows the depth and the competition within our squad. And all the girls that aren't in the 11 are pushing to get that opportunity and are willing to grab with both hands. It's only going to get better over the next few years.' It was a momentous day for Prendergast as well as Amy Hunter as the pair both broke the 1000 ODI runs mark for Ireland. Pic: Seb Daly/Sportsfile Ireland return to Dublin next month for a three-game T20 series against Pakistan. Lewis spoke about the excitement in camp heading into the future. 'We're all looking towards the qualifiers and a World Cup and I think that it starts from these games, how we change our approach into the games. I think that then leading into Pakistan, that will be a more challenging series, but yeah it's really exciting.' Before the Pakistan series though Ireland have a second ODI against Zimbabwe on Monday 28 July in Stormont once again. First ball is set to be thrown at around 10:45am and will be streamed live on Ireland Cricket's YouTube channel.
