Galaxy S23 Ultra proves how robust Samsung phones are after emerging from an icy river

Despite the prevalence of phone cases, most modern smartphones are actually quite rugged and well-built. A Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra just proved this point recently after emerging from the icy depths of a Swedish river hours after it was submerged. The phone was accidentally dropped into a fishing hole in the frozen Kalix River in Sweden. With an IP-68 rating, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is only made to withstand submersion in water up to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. This particular phone, however, remained three meters deep for over five hours. The owner was eventually able to retrieve the device using a summer fishing net tied to a birch rod. Despite the environment it had been subjected to, the S23 Ultra powered on immediately and showed the owner some notifications as if nothing had happened. Even more impressive was the fact that the phone apparently didn't need to be rebooted or dried. A fishing net was used to retrieve the phone. | Image credit — Samsung The owner of the S23 Ultra shares that, during the phone's time in the river, he was terrified of losing every digital thing he held dear. — Mikael Krekula, Samsung, May 2025 The entire ordeal is a fascinating look at just how much more robust modern devices are than we give them credit for. If the Galaxy S23 Ultra had never booted up again, Krekula wouldn't have questioned the phone's build quality. But despite enduring stress that it wasn't made for, the Ultra showed off just how rugged Samsung's phones have become. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra also has an IP-68 rating. | Video credit — Samsung While an IP-69 rating also exists — which requires a device to withstand pressurized water streams — it doesn't really make IP-68 redundant. These certifications are confusing but, in simple words, an IP-68 phone can withstand IP-69 stress tests if built to do so. This is likely why the S23 Ultra survived outside the parameters it's certified for: it's built better than a strict IP-68 device. Samsung's largest rival in the U.S., Apple, also uses IP-68 ratings for the entire iPhone 16 lineup. The Google Pixel 9 lineup also has the same rating, though there have been reports over the years of Pixel phones not faring too well when exposed to the elements. Chinese flagships, which usually provide more hardware for less money, also stick to IP-68 ratings for the most part. The Galaxy S23 Ultra 's little adventure to the bottom of the river just confirms that its successor, the S25 Ultra, is definitely one of the best smartphones of 2025.

Samsung's putting Apple to shame with the One UI 7 update for my Galaxy S23 Ultra — and it's not even close

With the arrival of the Galaxy S24 Ultra last year, it ushered in the age of Galaxy AI for Samsung. But in a surprising twist, Samsung released a software update later that brought many of those Galaxy AI features to my then 1-year old Galaxy S23 Ultra. That same phone, now over 2 years old, is once again reaping the benefits of yet another software update that makes it just as appealing as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Frankly, it's remarkable seeing how Samsung's strategy is playing out with its Galaxy AI rollout to older phones. In fact, not only does the new One UI 7 update breathe in new life to the once best Android phone contender, but it's also putting its rival Apple to shame. Apple Intelligence has no doubt injected new experiences, but Apple has been selective with what iPhones end up getting them — and it needs to change. Here's why. In addition to the visual change of the interface, which some will love or hate, the One UI 7 update for the Galaxy S23 Ultra brings many of the new features found with the newer Galaxy S25 Ultra. This is a big deal because it shows how older phone models can still get access to some of the latest Galaxy AI features that debuted with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. For example, my Galaxy S23 Ultra can now record, transcribe, and summarize phone calls with the help of Galaxy AI. It's a helpful feature that makes it easier to remember or recall those lengthy phone conversations because Galaxy AI is doing the work of understanding what's being talked about and giving me bullet points of the most pertinent details. The Galaxy S23 Ultra also gets the new AI Select feature, which lets me make selections on what I'm doing on my phone and provides me with useful actions. With a YouTube video, I can use AI Select to create a GIF animation or screenshot. Meanwhile, I can use AI Select to access Writing Assist to summarize articles. However, there are some Galaxy AI features it doesn't get — understandably so. I don't see the Now Brief, but it packages in the Now Bar that works similarly to the Dynamic Island on iPhones. When I play music, I'll see it on the lock screen as a small bar at the bottom of the display, which then transforms into a small widget near the top of the interface when I'm using the phone. Other new Galaxy AI features I don't see include Audio Eraser and Personal Data Engine. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Oddly enough, I've also found that the One UI 7 update handles some Cross App Actions, like being able to ask it to search for a nearby pet friendly restaurant with outdoor seating and then saving them in the Notes app. All of this proves how I think Samsung's winning the AI strategy. The reason why I think Samsung's winning in this area is because it's not reserving them for the latest models. Again, it's worth pointing out that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is over two years old at this point. Apple Intelligence is only available to the current iPhone 16 lineup, along with last year's iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Sorry iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, you're out of this exclusive club. As much as a lot of companies like to point at hardware limitations as the main culprit behind determining what phones get AI features or not, Samsung's showing everyone that it can still deliver some features. What's even more mind blowing is that Samsung's rolling out the One UI 7 update to some of its 2021 and 2022 phones. They won't all get the same AI features and tools as the Galaxy S25 lineup, but some are better than none at all. Apple isn't embracing this strategy, based on its existing rollout — which has been highly criticized for its staggered approach. I would be more convinced if Apple extended Apple Intelligence to older phones, like the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max at the very least, but that hasn't been the case. Although I'm thrilled about these new Galaxy AI features on my Galaxy S23 Ultra, I know very well that it's a matter of time before it's finally retired from the update schedule. At launch, Samsung pledged four years of major Android updates with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, leaving it with now two more before its promise is fulfilled. However, the newer Galaxy S25 series has an even longer seven years of updates. Whatever flagship phone Samsung releases six years from now, the software and AI features in that phone could likely make their way to the Galaxy S25. It's like Apple giving the iPhone X nearly the same Apple Intelligence features as the iPhone 16. There's still that sliver of hope that Apple could reverse course and expand Apple Intelligence to other, older iPhones — much in the same way that Samsung is doing it with its approach. All of this just proves how Samsung is beating Apple in this particular area.

Google Messages set to roll out 'delete for everyone' feature in latest beta version

WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage have all offered the option to unsend messages for some time, but Google Messages has been missing this feature until now. After testing the "Delete for Everyone" option earlier this year, Google is now beginning to roll it out to select users on the latest beta version of its messaging app. This update finally gives Google Messages users the ability to retract sent messages, putting it on par with other popular messaging platforms. Also Read: Did Karen Read flip the middle finger in court? Video sparks confusion A Reddit user reported that he is able to see the 'Delete for Everyone' option while using Google Messages in at least one conversation, which is a group chat of 12 people. The feature is not available in the smaller conversation groups he has or in the one-on-one conversations. The option to delete the message just for themselves will continue to exist on the platform. Despite using the latest Google Messages beta on both my Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra, the "Delete for Everyone" feature hasn't appeared, suggesting that Google is rolling it out to only a select group of beta users. Currently, there's no option to delete messages in one-on-one conversations, but this could change as the feature moves closer to a wider public release. Hopefully, these limitations will be addressed before the full rollout, as reported by Android Police. According to the previous reports, Google Messages will provide a window of 15 minutes to delete any message you have sent. The message deletion option was introduced by RCS Universal Profile 2.7, which is what it seems Google Messages is using to enable the new feature. It is also to be noted that the platform will show 'This message was deleted', just like other messaging platforms. Also Read: 100 Brits vs 100 Americans: New TikTok trend about bare-knuckle fight surfaces Google Messages provided the option to edit the RCS message which has been sent in May 2024. However, it became available to a wider audience only in September 2024. Thus, as Google tests the feature in its messaging platform, it will take a few months for it to be available to all users. Recently, Google Messages has been ramping up its features with some exciting updates. Among the new additions are a handy tool to silence RCS spam and fun single-emoji full-screen effects that add a bit of flair to conversations. Google is also in the process of rolling out custom icons for group chats, giving users a chance to personalise their chat experience even more.

Miss the S23 Ultra's 10x camera? This brand could revive it (and then some)

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR A leaker has suggested that a next-generation OPPO phone could adopt a 200MP periscope camera and a 50MP 10x camera. If confirmed, this would make for the most impressive zoom camera hardware on a smartphone. The last phone with a 10x periscope camera was 2023's Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung made a splash with 2021's Galaxy S21 Ultra, being among the first phone makers to offer a 10x periscope camera. We haven't seen a phone with a 10x camera in a few years, but it looks like a rival manufacturer might offer this tech. Regular leaker Digital Chat Station has hinted on Weibo that a next-generation flagship phone could adopt a 200MP periscope camera and a 50MP ~10x periscope camera. The leaker has frequently used this red emoji for OPPO-related leaks, which means this new claim applies to an upcoming OPPO Find series flagship. Digital Chat Station said the 200MP zoom camera would have a large sensor size while the 10x camera would feature a small sensor. This wouldn't be a surprise as a 10x periscope camera requires plenty of room, leaving virtually no space for a large sensor. A big step forward for smartphone zoom? If confirmed, this means the OPPO phone would have the most advanced zoom cameras on the market. We've seen vivo, Xiaomi, and HONOR all offering 200MP periscope cameras before, but we haven't seen a 10x periscope camera since the Galaxy S23 Ultra. And we haven't seen a 50MP 10x camera at all. A 50MP 10x camera would also theoretically be capable of 20x shots at lossless resolution, delivering a hitherto unseen level of zoom quality for a conventional smartphone. We've also seen OPPO and Xiaomi offering AI zoom tech to spruce up images, with mostly good results. The combo of a 50MP 10x camera and similar AI zoom software suggests solid picture quality beyond 20x in some situations. In fact, our own testing reveals that the Galaxy S23 Ultra's aging 10x camera can still beat the vivo X200 Pro's 200MP telephoto camera in a few scenarios. We really hope this rumored phone comes to global markets if it actually has a 10x camera. But we don't have high hopes as none of OPPO's previous Ultra phones have launched outside China. Got a tip?
