Galena outfitters and campgrounds closed due to severe flooding

GALENA, Mo. — Many campers in Galena had to cancel their plans today due to multiple outfitters and campgrounds being shut down from heavy flooding. James River Outfitters is one of these affected places, which is now closed due to water being at dangerously high levels. 'I think it peaked at about 24 foot around that area.' says Hayley Dy, a staff member at James River Outfitters, 'So it'll probably take us a week or two of cleanup, but hopefully it will be in operation again soon.' She adds that this is one of the worst flooding incidents James River has experienced. 'We're looking at, you know, quite a bit of debris. 2017, you know, was the worst for us, I'd say,' says Dy. 'But this one, I mean, debris wise for the campground, it will be the most cleanup we've had in a while.' Y Bridge Canoe & Outfitters was also closed off due to flooding. In a statement given to Ozarks First, they say that they 'would rather lose some business than risk someone getting hurt'. Some areas were less affected than others, with Kurt Rhodes, owner of Bridge Walker RV Campground, saying the flooding 'really didn't affect us' and has been operating at full capacity. He does add, however, that there will be a long cleanup process due to large amounts of debris. 'We do have a large mess down at the bottom to clean up. That came from other campgrounds.' says Rhodes, 'That'll be probably what we'll concentrate on this week as soon as it dries up, try to get all the trash picked up so it doesn't go down the river.' Rhodes is also an advocate for the City of Galena Save our Bridge Campaign, which calls for the repairing of the historic Y-Bridge, an iconic landmark in Galena, which is near his campground. Cherokee County officers celebrated for outstanding service

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Cherokee County law enforcement are recognized for the services they provide to their respective communities. The annual Cherokee County Law Enforcement Awards Banquet took place Thursday night (5/15) at Bethel Church in Baxter Springs. Agencies represented were Columbus, Galena, Baxter Springs, and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The event, which includes dinner and the awards ceremony, allows each agency to recognize those who go above and beyond the call of duty. Sheriff Brian Henderson made this an annual event in 2023, when he was chief of police in Baxter Springs. 'It's not just administration picking somebody, it's their peers that are selecting them and saying, 'hey, this person deserves it.' And that's important to us,' said Sheriff Henderson. 'You look back at your accomplishments and just to know that you're your friends that you work with every day have recognized your efforts that you're out there doing, because a lot of times, that stuff goes unnoticed, and so it's a good opportunity for them to see that they're appreciated,' said Galena Police Chief, Chad Allison. Each agency gave out various awards Thursday. Those included Officer of the Year, Deputy of the Year, and a life-saving award. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Historian discovers Minnesota connection to Underground Railroad

At a presentation on Thursday, historian Karen Sieber will share her findings on Minnesota's connection to freeing enslaved Black Americans via the Underground Railroad in the mid-1800s. "Up until previously, it was thought that the role was minimal, it was assumed that like you said, this was a place of refuge. But we also know that historically that there was at least some activity here in the Underground Railroad," Sieber said. "Just this past year, I have discovered that quite a major player in the Underground Railroad was previously thought to be further south down the river was actually here in St. Paul during the territorial years of the state." That major player was Moses Dickson, a famous figure in America's Black history. "He was a Black abolitionist, he led two secret societies that were founded out of Galena and St. Louis that were used to organize both free and enslaved people throughout the U.S.," she said. Early research placed Dickson in cities along the Mississippi River. He's buried in St. Louis and helped establish a college there. "But I found him here in territorial St. Paul in the 1850s operating as a barber, which we know is a common profession for folks working in the Underground Railroad," she said. "Previously before working as a barber, he was a steward working on the steamboats." She shared newspaper clippings from the future Capital City referencing Dickson, leading her to believe his network of freeing slaves had vast reach up North, where his work was needed more than people might realize. "I think a lot of people grew up in the North thinking that the Underground Railroad, once you get to the North across that line, that things are fine and good. But the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 really changed that. And the fact that regardless of how far you got into the North and into the wilderness, you could still be brought back to that life," she said. "We know that the sheriff at the time during those territorial years was vigilant about trying to catch folks." Sieber will share more about the routes taken to reach freedom in Minnesota, while dispelling myths about the Underground Railroad, on Thursday night at the History Center of Olmsted County in Rochester.
