IND vs ENG: India coach Gautam Gambhir provides update on pacers' fitness and availability for series decider at The Oval

Jasprit Bumrah during day three of the Fourth Test vs England at Old Trafford (Photo by) Manchester: It's been over 50 days since the Indian team arrived here in England, and Jasprit Bumrah 's workload has been the focal point of India's planning ahead of each Test. As India's batters were pulling off a fighting draw at Old Trafford, Bumrah 's availability for the last Test — starting at Oval in London on Thursday — again became a point of discussion. At the start of the tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir had confirmed that the team management had planned to play Bumrah in only three of the five Tests. India go to London 1-2 down in the series, and Bumrah has already played his quota of three Tests. It's a tricky situation for both Bumrah and the team management. Will the team deviate from the three-Test plan regarding Bumrah's availability, since now there is a big opportunity to come out of the gruelling series with a 2-2 scoreline? Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'There has been no talk about it (Bumrah playing at the Oval). And no such decision has been made on whether Bumrah (will) play in the last Test. Ultimately, whoever plays, they'll try and do the job for the country,' Gambhir said after the fourth Test. Bumrah's susceptibility to breaking down in the middle of a Test has given the caretakers of Indian cricket sleepless nights. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) doesn't want a repeat of the incident in the Sydney Test at the beginning of the year. In Australia, the medical team working on Bumrah believed that his long and intense spell in the Test in Melbourne may have triggered the back injury in Sydney. TOI understands that Bumrah is now advised to bowl 45–50 overs maximum per Test. Bumrah bowled just 33 overs in the last Test in Manchester. This was after an eight-day break after the third Test at Lord's. TOI has learnt there have been murmurs in BCCI corridors around Bumrah's pick-and-choose policy in Test cricket. He was not given the Test captaincy only because he would not be available for every Test. The BCCI is not comfortable with the selectors and the team management going into a series without knowing if Bumrah will be available for the entire series. It is being considered whether he should make himself available for an entire series, or not at all. Sources said that when the fourth Test began with Bumrah in the XI, it was almost certain that he will give the Oval Test a miss. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare,' was Gambhir's curt reply to a query around the fitness of the pace attack. Gambhir asserted that he doesn't prefer the term 'transition' while discussing the Test team playing in England. He believes this team may be inexperienced, but it's the best team that India have. He doesn't like to hide behind the words 'transition' and 'inexperience'. 'You're asking someone who only believes in results. And I've always said that in the past as well, I believe in results. Yes, there is inexperience, but this is still the best Indian team right now. We're still down 1-2. Hopefully, we can try and make it 2-2. That's going to be a great achievement,' Gambhir said. Poll Is the decision to limit Bumrah's Tests to three justified? Yes, to manage his workload No, he should play all Tests It's a tough call It will be interesting to see if India risk Bumrah. His speed, after all, had come down significantly on the third evening of the third Test, where he returned figures of 2/112, his poorest show in his seven-year-long Test career. India's only win has come when Bumrah opted to sit out of the second Test at Edgbaston. It's not that the Indian bowling can't hold its own without him. 'India doing well despite Gambhir's tactical misfire': Head coach 'hasn't made anything easier' including Karun cover-up

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar minced no words as he tore into Gautam Gambhir's 'tactical missteps' for the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, saying the visitors are doing well in the UK despite the poor selection calls made by the current head coach. Manjrekar's remarks right after Gambhir's fiery press conference, which happened after India drew the Manchester Test against all odds. Gambhir's fiery press conference continues to generate plenty of reactions. (PTI) Gautam Gambhir is under fire for India's poor results in the longest format. India have lost the previous two Test series against New Zealand (home) and Australia (away). India are also trailing in the five-match series against England. However, a young team led by Shubman Gill continues to give England a run for their money. India have had the better of England in almost the entire series, but Ben Stokes' team has been able to win the crucial moments, and hence they are 2-1 ahead. However, the visitors have a realistic chance of levelling the series in the final game at the Oval, beginning Thursday, July 31. However, Manjrekar said that India are doing well in the series against England despite Gambhir's selection calls. He also went on to say that Gambhir hasn't made anything easier with his missteps. Let's not forget: India were swept 3-0 at home by New Zealand, who then lost comfortably to Australia,' Manjrekar said on JioHotstar after the Manchester Test came to an end. 'The fight we've seen? That's the players' grit. Tactically, Gambhir hasn't always made it easier, particularly with selections,' he added. The Karun Nair comment Karun Nair, who made a comeback to the Test playing XI after eight years, was dropped for the Manchester Test after he failed to set the stage on fire in the first three games. When Gambhir was asked about the right-hander being axed from the lineup, the India head coach said that the team doesn't drop anyone, as it is a case of playing the best XI. Manjrekar did not take this comment well, saying a player dropped is dropped and there is no other spin that can be given to this narrative. 'The fight we've seen in this team? That's down to the players. Because tactically, Gambhir hasn't always made things easier - especially with some of his selections,' said Manjrekar. 'And to suggest that Karun Nair 'wasn't dropped'... come on. You guys see it as a drop; for them, it's about 'picking the right team,' he added. Under Gambhir, in the previous 12 Tests that India have played, the side have registered eight losses, two wins and two draws.

"I Don't Even Look...": Gautam Gambhir's Blunt Response To Sai Sudharshan's Critics

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir said he prioritises partnerships over individual scores, emphasising the importance of the number three batsman contributing to these partnerships. He also highlighted Sai Sudharsan as a remarkable talent. India went with Sai at No.3 in the series opener, but he made zero in the first innings and 30 in the second. He was dropped from the side, and Karun was promoted up the order. However, in three Tests, Nair has mustered only 131 runs at an average of 21.83. "I don't even look at the individual runs. I only look at the partnerships. I think if we want to build this team, we want to build this team on partnerships, not on individual scores. I think if the number three can have a partnership and can contribute in that partnership, I think he's done his job. That is something which is very important. And Sai is a phenomenal talent," Gambhir told the media. Sai, making a comeback into the playing XI for the fourth Test, made a vital fifty in the first innings but was dismissed by Chris Woakes for a golden duck in the second innings. "I think you can't keep judging people after every game. He's 23, playing his first test series in England in English conditions, and still putting his hand out and scoring that brilliant 50 or 60. I think you've got to have patience with these boys," he added. Gambhir praised Team India for forging their own history, highlighting their character and determination to fight for the country. He felt the current Indian team was the best and emphasised the valuable lessons learned from their performance under pressure, particularly the draw on Day 5 against England in the fourth Test. "They (Team India) are creating their own history. No one in this team will follow anyone now that they want to... This is the foundation of this team. These are characters sitting in the dressing room wanting to fight for the country, and they will continue to do that... This is the best 18 that is going to represent, and that is in the dressing room. The most important thing is that these guys are going to learn a lot from what they did today, because being under pressure, batting five sessions is never easy on Day 5 against an attack like England and then coming out with a draw," Gambhir said. England is currently leading the five-match series 2-1, India will be eyeing to win the in fifth Test at The Oval to level the series to share the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, on the other hand England will look to bounce back and win the series 3-1. Coming to the match, stellar centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the second innings guided India to secure a draw in the fourth test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday.
